Almost completely cut off for centuries and only opened up to outsiders in the 1970s, it is a private haven with beautiful ancient traditions. The Bhutanese name for Bhutan, Druk Yul, means “Land of the Thunder Dragon”: with monasteries and fortresses clinging to the cliffs above the forested Paro Valley, its mystical identity remains today.

Travel Information

Bhutan is a remote kingdom in the Himalayas. Cut off from civilisation for most of history, Bhutan remains fiercely independent. It only welcomed visitors in recent decades and had no TV until 1999. The ancient traditions of Mahayana Buddhism continue unchanged to the present day.

Drive to the capital of Bhutan and admire the Himalayan scenery. You’ll see people spinning prayer wheels by King’s Memorial Chorten, a monument to peace. You’ll no doubt want to visit The Tiger’s Nest Monastery 900 metres about Paro Valley.

Engage in a spot of crypto-zoology and pursue the mythical Yeti. Although the fabled Yeti is probably the Himalayan bear that shouldn’t spoil the appeal of the myth. The locals will be happy to regale you with stories of this famous creature. You can also see Snow Leopards in the National Park.

As you’re in some of the world’s highest mountains you can trek into the surrounding forests, free from bustling crowds of tourists. If you’re daring head out on the treacherous Snowman Trek: a journey across the snow-capped peaks few manage to complete.

Bhutan is a tricky destination to get to but definitely worth the journey. Drukair flies to Paro, which is the country’s only international airport, direct from many Asian cities such as Bangkok, Delhi, Katmandu and Singapore.
