A guide to the Amazon Rainforest

A trip many people only dream about, the Amazon Rainforest is like no other

Quite a few people I have spoken to mention the Amazon rainforest as one of their bucket list holiday destinations and rightly so!  It is a once in a lifetime experience, where you will discover things you couldn't even imagine. Immerse yourself in an environment like none other, discover the extraordinary flora and fauna which lives within the forest and the surrounding area.

Start the adventure in Quito, the capital city of Ecuador. Quite a contrast to the rainforest itself, however this vibrant city is quite often overlooked. During your stay, you must visit the Equator for that Facebook holiday picture. Visit Mitad del Mundo and stand on the point which divides the northern and southern hemispheres. There are a few lovely local restaurants in the area which area which is a lovely lunch stop.

After lunch, head back to the centre of Quito and spend the afternoon exploring the local shops and markets. Quito has a rich history, so there is plenty to do and see for those of you who are seeking a cultural experience

This is what you have been waiting for. On today's agenda, you will be heading into the Amazon Rainforest for a  5-day jungle experience like none other. Stay in a lodge to make your experience comfortable but still in keeping with the jungle vibe.

During your stay head to the Yasuní National Park, which is famous for being one of the world's top 10 most biodiverse places. Here you will see a vast range of the most unusual exotic plants and animals so remember to bring your camera! Most of the lodges in the area are situated around a beautiful lagoon, which is only accessed via a paddle boat, making your experience very secluded and peaceful. During your daily boat rides, you will get better at spotting the tropical wildlife which surrounds you. Head out on jungle treks led by your local guide, who will educate you about the natural inhabitants of the forest. Head out on a night time walk and discover the nocturnal creatures of the Amazon.

Make sure you head to an observation deck to experience the jungle close to the canopy. Even if you aren't a fan of heights, it is an experience you cannot miss as so much activity happens up in the trees. On one of the days, your guide will take you to the indigenous Kichwa communities, where you will learn how these people live in the forest and treat it like home. Head to the parrot clay licks and see these animals close up in their natural habitat. Another night time activity you will be taken on requires your torches and your bravery! Head out on a nighttime Caiman spotting adventure and get close to these scaly reptiles.

Your stay in the jungle will be unforgettable, it is definitely a bucket list destination with so much to do and see. Soak up the tropical atmosphere and go on an adventure of a lifetime.

Spending a couple of days in Quito you'll explore the city and visit the equator before on Day 3 heading into the forest for four days. You'll experience unparalleled wildlife and you'll be taken on treks and walks (including at night) to explore the flora and fauna of the Amazon. Climb observation towers to experience the forest from its canopy and take an Amazon cooking class to learn about the local cuisine.
