Things To Do in Rio de Janeiro

With the excitement and legacy of the 2016 Olympics, Rio De Janeiro continues to welcome millions of tourists every year. Whilst its track record on LGBT friendliness is sometimes a bit of a yo-yo, it's still an incredible place to visit with lots to see and do.

Here's our guide to our favorite things to do in Rio De Janeiro.

Sugarloaf Mountain

Going up Sugarloaf mountain is one of the things everyone always recommends and they aren't wrong about that! The views from the top are just breathtaking and you are surrounded by beautiful nature which is a nice break from the busy city down below. It is very easy to get to with just two cable car rides which take you right to the top. Traveller's tip: Go early in the morning to avoid crowds and see the city wake up!

Christ the Redeemer

Probably the most well-known icon of Rio de Janeiro. This humongous statue watches over the city and also provides outstanding views. The statue is located on Corcovado mountain and is accessible via train. Traveller's tip: Buy your ticket the day before you wish to visit as only a limited number of people are allowed up at one time. Trains depart every 20 minutes, but again it is recommended to go early in the morning or late at night.

Copacabana Beach

This long beautiful beach is famous for its lively atmosphere. If you are looking for a place to relax and sit back with a caipirinha then head down and bag a spot on the sand and watch the waves crawl up the sand. You'll find lots of locals dancing and singing to traditional Rio jams and plenty of aspiring footballers practising their skills on the sand. Traveller's tip: It's best to visit during the day and not at night, although the beach is lit and there are police around, it is safer to visit during the day.

Botanical Gardens

If you are seeking a break from the city, why not head to the Botanical Gardens which showcases some of the most relaxing and tranquil gardens around along with some exotic animals! Traveller's tip: To cover everything it is recommended that half a day is reserved for the gardens. There is a lovely restaurant within the gardens where you can enjoy a tasty meal surrounded by natural beauty.

Museu Historico Nacional

For those of you who want to soak up the historical culture this city provides, the Museu Historico Nacional is definitely worth a visit. The museum contains thousands of historic relics depicting the history of Brazil. Highlights include huge oil paintings which illustrate the horrific war between Brazil and Paraguay, the 58 year reign of Dom Pedro II and much more! This is a very affordable excursion as prices start at $8.
