Group Trip

Cuba is undergoing great change as it opens up to the West after years of isolation. It still retains its otherworldly glamour, but it’s bound to lose some of its charms as American money rolls in. Now is as good a time as any to visit, and see a country that has remained frozen in time for so long.

What better way to see the landscapes of Cuba than to cycle through towns, cities and farms, taking in the extraordinary sights and mingling with the locals? You’ll party in Havana, stay with a Cuban family and acquaint yourself with the Caribbeans most contentious and fascinating country.

Group Trip Breakdown

Havana

Day 1: Arrival

When we’ve checked into our accommodation we’ll have a welcome lunch. You’ll be able to sample some classic Caribbean cuisine. We’ll then set out on a walking tour of the city, and discover its faded glamour. In the evening, we’ll explore the city’s music scene.

Las Terrazas

Day 2: Cycle To Las Terrazas

Prepare for an early start. We’ll drive to  San Antonio de Los Baños. This city is home to a film school in part founded by iconic novelist and Cuba fan, Gabriel García Márquez.

It’ll then be time to cycle southwest through Caimito, Vereda, Guayabal and Cayajabos. We’ll pass citrus plantations, stopping on the way to learn about Cuba’s agriculture.

Our trip will end for today in Las Terrazas, a UNESCO protected biosphere.

Viñales

Day 3: Las Terrazas To Viñales

Today we’ll be cycling past forests and grasslands through La Sierra del Rosario Biosphere Reserve. We’ll stop at Bahía Honda for lunch, and then continue through the towns of Cabañas and La Palma. From La Palma we’ll be transferred to Viñales.

The magical Valley de Viñales is a sight to behold, emerging as it does from flat plains and caves.

Viñales

Day 4: Puerto Esperanza To Viñales

After breaksfast we’ll be cycling past more karst landscapes and heading north to Puerto Esperanza. We’ll pass quaint villages and tobacco farms. At the fishing village of Puerto Esperanza, we’ll have lunch in the shade of mango trees.

Later, we’ll head further into the valley, visit an organic farm and explore one of the many trails.

Viñales

Day 5: Viñales To Pinar del Río

Today we’ll cycle down San Carlos Valley passing limestone bluffs, tobacco fields and remote huts. We’ll stop at the tobacco mecca, San Juan y Martínez, where Cuba’s famous cigars originate. Here we’ll learn about the production process behind Cohiba and Monte Cristos.

We’ll then cycle to the city of Pinar del Río, distinguished, as the named suggests, by abundant pines scattered along the riverbank. In the evening, we’ll dine at a local restaurant.

Havana

Day 6: Pinar del Río To San Diego de Los Banos

Today we’ll cycle along La Carretera Central highway passing through Paseo Real de San Diego, Herradura, Capilla to our final destination, Fierro. We’ll have a picnic en route.

In the afternoon, we’ll return to Havana.

Havana

Day 7: Havana

In the morning we’ll head to Jaimanitas and visit the art town, a fantasy world created by the artist José Rodriguez Fuster. Our artistic journey will continue as we visit the Museo de Ernesto Hemingway, a writer who fell in love with Cuba as Marquez did. It’s located in his former home.

We’ll have lunch by the seaside in Cojimar. You’ll be free to explore Havana in the afternoon. At night we’ll take a spin in a classic 1950s Cadillac. We’ll then enjoy the bustling nightlife of the city.

Havana

Day 8: Departure

This morning it’ll be time to say goodbye to your cycling companions and goodbye to Cuba – until next time.
