Under Sharia Law, which is enforced on the hundreds of islands that make up the Maldives, being gay or lesbian is a criminal offense punishable by up to eight years in prison and 100 lashes. It's a shocking reality that many travellers may not be aware of.
Despite this, the Maldives is a popular destination for LGBTQ+ travellers looking for a relaxing and romantic getaway. Although public displays of affection are not advisable in Male, resorts offer private accommodations and secluded areas where couples can enjoy intimacy and romance. With private pools, overwater bungalows, and pristine beaches, LGBTQ+ travellers can celebrate their love in a breathtaking setting without fear of discrimination. However, it's important to note that same-sex marriage is not currently legal in the Maldives.
Many resorts have a welcoming attitude towards same-sex couples and alcohol is readily available.
