Puerto Vallarta is Mexico’s most popular gay destination. As gay people from Europe flock to Mykonos in summer, gay people from America flock to Puerto Vallarta. Liz Taylor and Richard Burton put it on the map when they bought two properties near the malecon and set up shop in Puerto Vallarta. Prior to their arrival it was a sleepy fishing town.
Where Liz Taylor went, well heeled Americans followed. It’s a second home destination for many Americans, and it has the highest house prices in Mexico as a result. Puerto Vallarta is perfect for a gay Mexican honeymoon. You can stay in a boutique hotel, a villa, the city’s only five diamond property, or, if you’re feeling really flash, Liz Taylor’s former home. Waking up in the legendary actresses bed with your significant other makes for a great start to a honeymoon. PV (as it’s also known) is home to a world-class gay scene. Head to Zona Romantica at night for some pretty wild nightlife.
Cancun and Riviera Maya is a perennial favourite and it’s hard to beat if you’d like to enjoy the finer side of all-inclusive drinking and dining at a large resort. There are many wedding packages for gay couples in Mexico, so you can combine your wedding and honeymoon in one trip. Over in Tulum, you’ll also find excellent luxury hotels offering stunning accommodation and a more relaxed vibe.
Some honeymooners want to visit a remote paradise isle, with access to luxury amenities. Think the Maldives, Mauritius, etc. But some honeymooners want to combine the buzz of big city life with cultural experiences. If you’re in the latter category, Mexico is a great choice.
You could land in Mexico City and spend a couple of days surrounded by endless sensory stimulation. You could then fly to Puerto Vallarta – it takes no more than two-hours. PV is fairly compact so you can walk everywehere. It boasts a great food scene – second only to Mexico City. You can unwind on the beach, take a boat trip around Banderas Bay and even go whale watching, From PV, you can take a trip to the small town of Sayulita. It has a real Mexican feel and it’s also popular with American tourists.
Alternatively, your honeymoon could begin Cancun, where you can experience total relaxation at one of the many resorts. For a culture fix, you can head from Cancun to Chichén Itzá and discover the splendid ruins of the Mayan civilisation.
