Discover Truro, the southernmost city in the United Kingdom, known for its rich Cornish history and culture.
Truro has a long-standing settlement dating back to the Norman period and grew into an important port by the late 14th century. Its inland location, thriving fishing industry, and role as a stannary town (where tin and copper from Cornish mines were stamped) contributed to its significance. During the English Civil War, Truro supported Charles I and sent a substantial army to aid the King. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Truro experienced economic growth, attracting more people to the region. Industries such as tanneries, pottery, iron-smelting, and mining flourished. Truro officially became a city in 1877. On this tour, your knowledgeable guide will showcase the highlights of this beautiful city.
The tour begins with a visit to Walsingham Place and Lemon Street, renowned for their stunning Georgian and Victorian architecture. Lemon Street Market, located on Lemon Street, is home to a variety of independent shops. Next, explore the Hall of Cornwall, a grade II listed building that was once the headquarters of the Truro City Council.
Then, visit the magnificent Truro Cathedral, one of the UK's most exquisite Gothic-revival cathedrals and one of only three cathedrals in the country with three spires . If open, we will have a visit inside the cathedral and explore the Celtic Cross outside.
Continuing the tour, we will visit the Truro Crown Court, another grade II listed building situated on the site of a former medieval castle and later a cattle market. Finally, the tour concludes with a visit to the Royal Cornwall Museum, a top-notch institution that documents Cornish life and culture.
