About your itinerary

? Don't forget that if something isn't quite right we can make changes to the itinerary.
As promised, I am happy to enclose your revised itinerary with a fair bit less driving, covering both the highlights of the North and the South Island.
You will pretty much the same itinerary, but with the North Island having private chauffeurs throughout your time, before your flight from Rotorua to Christchurch and your amazing Tranzalpine train across to the West Coast of this gorgeous part of the country.
You will then at this stage collect your car hire as the South Island's scenery is too good to miss, and one I can only recommend by driving, so you really have the chance to explore and enjoy the various highlights along the roads that open up to you between destinations.
I am really excited to see what you think of the below and looking forward to confirming either Aus or NZ with you.
Best travels,

Text Welcome to New Zealand
Get ready for mammoth national parks, dynamic Māori culture, and world-class surfing and skiing. New Zealand can be mellow or action-packed, but it's always epic.
There are just 4.8 million New Zealanders, scattered across 268,021 sq km: bigger than the UK with one-fourteenth of the population. Filling in the gaps are the sublime forests, mountains, lakes, beaches and fiords that have made NZ one of the best hiking (locals call it 'tramping') destinations on the planet. Tackle one of the epic 'Great Walks' – you might've heard of the Heaphy and Milford Tracks – or spend a few hours wandering along a beach, paddling a canoe or mountain biking through some easily accessible wilderness.

After our chat I know you are very keen to know the best restaurants in each area you will be staying and traveling through, so I have put together a mix of amazing places to grab a bite. From Michelin stars to more local authentic places, there is plenty for everyone in Auckland! I can also reserve the restaurants on your behalf nearer the time!
PASTURE
There are only 25 seats and there's only one option: a ten-course degustation served by the chefs themselves. You will taste combinations of flavor and texture you’ve never experienced anywhere else, with a bias towards traditional techniques like open fire cooking, fermenting, pickling and preserving. Ed and Laura Verner love connecting land, sea, producer and diner for an all-round food lovers dream.
MR ZHOU'S DUMPLINGS
The dumpling wars have been raging for some years in Auckland but places like Mr Zhou’s are perennial favourites (Barilla and Eden Noodles are also very popular just a couple of streets away on Dominion Road – Auckland’s Asian food capital). Inhaling a dozen pork and fennel dumplings bathed in your perfect mix of black vinegar, soy and chilli is a quintessential cheap and cheerful Auckland experience.
DEPOT EATERY
Al Brown is one of New Zealand’s best-known chefs and this stylishly casual joint has been consistently packed since the day it opened. Fresh, seasonal New Zealand produce and flavours are elevated with international influences to make shared plates interesting, but proudly unpretentious. Booking is advised! Try the lamb ribs with skordalia and cumin paprika oil or the famous hapuka sliders with pickled lemon mayo and watercress.
MASU
Masu suits anyone who loves Japanese flavours but is open to new interpretations on the theme. The black cod, grilled lamb cutlets and crayfish spicy miso tacos fly out the door. The menu tells you you’re eating high-end Robata-style Japanese sharing plates using the very best of New Zealand produce, but the attentive slick service, huge space and kick-ass fitout – complete with the theatre of a very open kitchen – make you wonder if you’re in New York, London or Melbourne.
GEMMAYZE STREET
Gemmayze Street is for anyone who loves sharing dishes packed with bold Middle Eastern flavours. As good for a fun date as it is for group, plates like octopus with pickled green chilli, coriander, pomegranate and squid ink or duck with red cabbage, fig, onion will blow you away.

Excursion Auckland Marine Safari Experience
Upon your arrival in Auckland, I wanted to start your itinerary with a bang with an incredible Marine Safari Experience direct from Downtown Auckland at the Viaduct Basin, just a short walk from all the major hotels and hostels in Auckland Central. Jump onboard their 65-foot (20-meter) catamaran and settle in as you head out to explore the beautiful Hauraki Gulf Marine Park, one of the most abundant and diverse marine parks in the world.
From their large open deck, enjoy views of famous Auckland landmarks like the Harbour Bridge, North Head and Devonport, and volcanic Rangitoto Island, as you watch out for orca and dolphins known to frequent the inner Waitematā Harbour.
As the crew provides knowledgeable commentary, their marine science experts conduct biological studies and invite you to join interactive research activities.
Because we’re venturing into a wild, natural environment, every trip is different and the marine wildlife we encounter varies from day to day. Typically, you are likely to encounter Bryde’s whales and common dolphins, but you may also meet pygmy blue whales, New Zealand fur seals, sharks, manta rays, turtles, and up to 26 species of seabirds – including the little blue penguin.
As you return to Auckland, sit back, take advantage of our licensed café and bar (or pre-book their new picnic lunch option), and enjoy the island views. And if you’re ready to learn more, there’s an optional research presentation so you can learn more about the wildlife you’ve encountered during your safari.
After a truly magical way to start your time in Auckland, it is time for a bite to eat!

Nearly 20 years ago, a family sheep farm in Matamata was used as the film set for Hobbiton in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Lord of the Rings tourism took off in New Zealand after the success of the movies, and so when they decided to re-build the same Hobbiton set for The Hobbit trilogy, they built it to last.

After a thrilling day, you are sure to want some gorgeous food to fill you up! I have selected a few recommended restaurants that I have included below. Upon booking your trip, I will reserve the restaurants nearer the time of departure.
Skyline Stratosfare Restaurant and Bar
This award-winning restaurant is shaking up the Rotorua dining scene. Take the scenic Skyline Gondola to one of the top restaurants Rotorua has to offer. Perched on the side of Mount Ngongotaha, marvel at the 180-degree panoramic view of Lake Rotorua as you sip on fine wines and nibble on tasty bar snacks.
Stratosfare serves locally sourced seafood, aged-prime cuts, seasonal soups, vegetables, salads and brasserie-style buffets. The mouthwatering cuisine with European and Asian influences is sure to delight all your senses.
Eat Streat
If you’re looking for somewhere epic to feast in Rotorua, look no further than Eat Streat. It’s one of the city’s most vibrant hot spots and for good reason. Located at the lake end of Tutanekai Street, you’ll find a bunch of restaurants, cafés and bars as well as the famous Lady Jane’s Ice Cream Parlour. The central walkway is covered (with a retractable roof) ideal for al fresco dining in all weather.
Atticus Finch
If the name doesn’t get you, the food certainly will. Atticus Finch is a culinary destination like no other, the perfect spot to linger over lively conversation and enjoy playful plates. The food here is fresh, innovative, made from scratch and big on flavour. With a menu that’s made to share, you’ll want to bring your mates. Make sure to try the crispy mozzarella risotto balls and the ginger sesame fried chicken. This establishment also specialises in craft beer and delicious cocktails, so plan for an epic night out.
The Regent Room
For those fancy moments, The Regent Room is an absolute Rotorua must-visit. Sink into their plush leather chairs and choose between the à la carte degustation or opt for one of their delicious mains. The menu is contemporary New Zealand and there are a handful of vegetarian options to be devoured. If you’re a bit of a cocktail lover, you’ll want to try their seasonal creations. Open from morning until night, this is the place to go for a really special meal out.

As you enter the village, you will learn some basic guidelines, considered a sacred cultural and spiritual space to the Maori people.  In this bush setting of New Zealand's North Island, discover the history of the area once thriving with indigenous villages.
You'll observe Maori warriors paddling a waka, or canoe, down the Wai-o-whiro stream, and visit the Fairy Spring for a look at freshwater eels, trout, and glowworms. The evening's cultural entertainment includes a performance of games, songs, and dances including the haka, or war dance.
Learn about Maori customs, including the art of ta moko (tattoo), woodcarving, and medicinal uses of native plants. Savor a selection of succulent dishes during a traditional hangi feast, with foods cooked underground in an earthen oven. Your dinner includes New Zealand meats and poultry along with vegetables and fresh salads. Top off your meal with buffet-style desserts with drinks available to purchase from the bar.

Today you are in for a truly special adventure. This small group, fully-guided day trip combines all of the key highlights in the area with the famous Lake Tekapo, Mt Cook National Park and Tasman Glacier as key highlights.
Led by our famously passionate tour guides, notorious for bringing your journey to life by sharing their stories and rich background knowledge and run in modern, comfortable minibuses packed with extras ensuring your comfort and safety.
Your tour starts in the stunning city of Christchurch. As we drive out of the city your guide will not only set the scene for your adventurous day but also point out and guide you past some of the area’s top highlights.
Departing Christchurch we then make our way through the impressive Canterbury plains with plenty of amazing New Zealand farmland and countryside to see along our way to Geraldine. Arriving in this quaint town we will stop for a quick morning tea.
Exiting Geraldine we head towards the famous blue lakes of Lake Tekapo but to get there first, we must go through some impressive alpine passes with amazing views. As we come over the hill to Tekapo you will be stunned by the amazing view of the lake.
Once in the township of Tekapo you will have time to explore the very popular Church of the Good Shepherd, see the Mackenzie Sheepdog and get those Instagram-worth shots of Lake Tekapo before we continue to Mt Cook.
Turning west you begin to enter the Aoraki National Park and Lake Pukaki begins to emerge in front of us. Lake Pukaki is one of the bluest lakes you will ever see and is stunningly framed by the backdrop of Aoraki/Mt Cook and the Southern Alps. We stop for some amazing photos and to just marvel at the sight that we are beholding. It’s not hard to see why many Lord of the Rings scene were filmed nearby and we will point them out for you.
While in the national park, you have 2.5 hours of free time to enjoy free walks/hikes or one of the extra optional activities. Some of our recommendations include Tasman Glacier Walk, Scenic flights  (see the region from the air and land on the Tasman Glacier) or Mt Cook Visitor Centre & Hermitage Hotel. Whatever you decide to do we will pick you up and drop you off where you need to go and make sure you are well looked after.
One of our recommendations during you free time is the Tasman Glacier Lake walk and viewpoint. Icebergs can usually be seen floating in the lake in summer, and in winter, the lake freezes over. The track leads through the glacier’s old terminal moraines with amazing views of the glacier, river and lake.
Arriving at Mt Cook Village, weather depending, we should get some amazing shots of the mountain itself.  At 3724m, Aoraki/Mt Cook is New Zealand’s highest peak, however, the mountain can be viewed without any acclimatisation whatsoever from the village which is just 750m above sea level.
After a truly memorable day, you will return to Christchurch for a leisurely evening together.

As you can imagine given the dramatic landscape, the food here compliments the area to a T! Here are some of my recommendations!
Alice May Restaurant
Piling on the charm with its faux-Tudor decor, Alice May is the classiest restaurant in town. Sure, the menu includes meaty NZ favourites, but they usually come with a gourmet twist, like pork roasted in wine and star anise, brie-topped chicken or rosemary and pumpkin risotto. Try to snag an outdoor or window table for sigh-worthy mountain views.
Snake Bite Eatery
SnakeBite's flavour-packed meals awaken taste buds after their long slumber through the West Coast's lamb-and-whitebait menus. Indonesian, Malaysian, Thai, Chinese and Japanese dishes all feature, along with burgers and pies. Try the mussel fritters with wasabi mayo and, the speciality, the beef-cheek rendang. Between courses, glug craft beers on tap or a 'snakebite' (cider with beer).
Monsoon
Sip drinks in the sunshine or within the cosy, chalet-style bar of the Rainforest Retreat, which usually buzzes with a sociable crowd of travellers. Bar snacks, burgers, curries, roasts, steaks and posh pizzas ensure you needn't move from your comfy spot by the fire.

Excursion Franz Josef Glacier Heli-Hike
After a wonderful sleep in nestled in the rainforest, it will be time to experience one of New Zealand's pinnacle activities, your guided glacier Heli-hike! A glacier heli-hike is an EPIC experience, and one neither of you will forget in a hurry!
A first-hand exploration of a glacier by chopper, seeing only what experienced mountaineers can reach is a wilderness experience you’ll never forget.
Take a short walk into the Franz Josef Village base, where you’ll fly up to the Franz Josef Glacier in the Westland National Park. You’ll land on a section of this 12km long glacier where we’ve made a daily safety assessment of the conditions on this fast-moving ice flow. Equipped with glacier boots and crampons you’ll walk for two hours amongst the ice formations and pinnacles and see first-hand the extraordinary colours of the ice-flow.  Touch the ice, breathe in the fresh air.
You will then team up with Franz Josef Glacier Guides who have been taking visitors over this epic icefall terrain since 1990 and can trace their heritage back 100 years. They have an immaculate safety record, rigid assessments and using quality equipment, your safety and enjoyment is taken care of.
**PLEASE NOTE: both Franz Josef and Fox glaciers exist within a rainforest. And when it's too rainy/cloudy, the helicopters won't fly. So, even if you do book a heli-hike, there's really only about a 50/50 chance that you'll get up on a glacier. What I can do after booking is reserve the following morning as well just in case the weather dramatically changes!

Text Drive from Franz Josef to Queenstown
Today after a lovely rest and relaxing period in the stunning Rainforest Retreat, you will be ready to drive from Franz Josef south on Highway 6 along the coast until you get to Haast. From there, you'll head inland and go over the Haast Pass, which is pretty stunning!
If you have time, I recommend stopping in Makarora to do the Blue Pools walk. This short walk includes traversing through a mature beech and podocarp forest, and then crossing two suspension bridges to see the beautiful clear blue pools.
From the Blue Pools, you'll soon be driving along the northern end of Lake Wanaka, followed by the west side of Lake Hawea. These lakes are absolutely beautiful, and you'll definitely want to pull over at at least a few of the viewpoints for some photos.
Whether you're coming straight from Franz Josef or have spent your morning and afternoon stopping for hikes and viewpoints, I recommend stopping in the lakeside town of Wanaka for some sightseeing and dinner.
Wanaka has become Instagram-famous in recent years for both its Roy's Peak hike, and for That Wanaka Tree, which grows out of the lake. You won't be able to hike to Roy's Peak in just a couple of hours, but at the very least you should have time to stroll along the lakeshore and see the Wanaka Tree, and then head back to the city center for dinner – there are lots of good restaurants to choose from, ones I can recommend are the following!
Ode
Ode pride themselves on an innovative menu with organic and local produce at the center of all their dishes. Venison, lamb, and goat sirloin are all interesting meat options. If you’re a seafood fan the fish of the day changes regularly and is dependant on what’s in season locally. For a true taste of the chef’s artistry, try the 8-course option. Called the ‘Ode Experience’ this option showcases the very best of what Wanaka has to offer. It is recommended you allow up to 3 hours for this!
Big Fig
Best described as healthy comfort food, Big Fig has been serving Wanaka locals and travelers for several years.
The Lebanese-inspired breakfast menu serves up fantastic fresh options like the Middle Eastern Granola and Shakshuka. For lunch and dinner choose your plate size, the meat you want, and between 2-4 sides and salads (depending on what size plate you picked). The slow-cooked meats are the hero on the menu here and expect a varied selection like lamb shawarma, beef cheeks, and meatballs. There’s also heaps of vegetarian options like vegan tagines, stuffed vegetables, and vegetable stews.
Bistro Gentil
Situated a few minutes drive from Wanaka, Bistro Gentil boasts the most spectacular view – and you may be dining surrounded by lavender depending on the season. It is truly a gorgeous location with views of both Lake Wanaka and the Southern Alps making it one of the most romantic restaurants in Wanaka. The focus here is on traditional French cuisine. For starters, there’s a varied selection from the must-try French onion soup with gruyere croutons or the Fromage board with imported cheese from France. The Te Mana Lamb, Confit Duck Leg, and Free Range Pork Belly are all excellent options from the main menu.
Kota Restaurant & Bar
A casual restaurant with fantastic views over Lake Wanaka. The menu has an Asian twist with pad thai, pork belly, and duck in an orange and soy glaze as some of the most popular options on the menu. This restaurant is relatively new and it was formerly The Landing restaurant. The dumplings with Asian slaw and kimchi dressing comes highly recommended.
Kika
Kika is a tapas-style restaurant with multi-award-winning Head Chef James Stapley at the helm.
Sharing style plates are the style here and all of the produce is seasonal. Smaller style sharing dishes like the seared tuna or beef tartare are excellent options whilst the larger plates like the Te Mana lamb shoulder or half roast chicken are again fantastic. For vegetarians, there’s Jerusalem artichokes, shiitake mushrooms, and more.
After a fantastic dinner in Wanaka, it is time to drive an extra hour to your next stunning stop, Queenstown where you will spend 2 nights.

In Queenstown, there are once more plenty of amazing restaurants to revel in your incredible adventures of the past 2 weeks! Here are some of the best!
Rātā
After gaining Michelin stars for restaurants in London, New York and LA, chef-owner Josh Emett now wields his exceptional but surprisingly unflashy cooking back home in this upmarket yet informal back-lane eatery. Native bush, edging the windows and in a large-scale photographic mural, sets the scene for a short menu showcasing the best seasonal NZ produce.
Blue Kanu
Disproving the rule that all tiki houses are inherently tacky, Blue Kanu serves up a food style it calls 'Polynasian' – Fijian kokoda (raw fish with coconut and lime) in one hand, XO pork dumplings in the other. It's relaxed and personable, and although the marriage of the Polynesian decor and chopsticks sounds impossible to pull off, it works.
Yonder
With a menu inspired by 'the things we've loved around our travels', this cafe brings to the table a cosmopolitan assortment of dishes: bacon butties, kimchi bowls, salmon poké bowls. There are power points and USB ports by many of the indoor tables, but when the sun's out you'll want to be on the outdoor patio.
Public Kitchen & Bar
You can't eat closer to the water than at this excellent lakefront eatery where local is law: Cardrona lamb, Fiordland wild venison, Geraldine pork, South Island fish. Grab a group and order a selection of plates of varying sizes from the menu. The meaty dishes, in particular, are excellent.

Queenstown has some incredible experiences on offer for everybody, so I have added in some great suggestions to fill in your last day before your return back to the USA.
Horseback Riding
Ride through some of New Zealand’s most pristine countryside. Experience the unique tranquillity of the Glenorchy basin (only 45 km from Queenstown) with the option of over 150,000 acres to ride on. Designed to take in the stunning scenery that is Glenorchy, the Rees River trail takes you across farmland and onto the Rees River. You will experience crossing glacial-fed waters, ride amongst the lupin/wildflower fields, and be awe-inspired by the beautiful snow-capped mountain ranges known famously from LOTR, Hobbit, The Chronicles of Narnia, Mission Impossible and Wolverine origins. Come and have a REAL Kiwi experience!
Boutique Wine Tours
Discover world-class wines on this fun and interactive small-group wine tour offering a great taste of Central Otago’s wine, history, sights and cuisine.
Enjoy wine tastings from four premium vineyards over three contrasting wine sub-regions; Gibbston and the lesser-known Cromwell and Bannockburn basin. Stop in for a lunch at Carrick Vineyard and take a tour around the vineyard, barrel hall and see the wine-making facilities (weather permitting). Savour a delightful platter-style lunch made with locally sourced produce and accompanied by a flight of delectable estate wines. Sit back and relax in our luxury Mercedes-Benz minivans and take in the sights while our specialist Wine Guide provides a full commentary on the wine, sights and early history, ensuring an entertaining drive with plenty of photo opportunities along the way.
Paragliding Adventure
The views of Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables from the top of the Skyline Gondola are a must-see when visiting the lakeside city. Dial the excitement level up a notch by paragliding your way back down to lake-level. Beginners can feel confident jumping off the side of the mountain with a professional instructor strapped to them. Whether you’re wanting a gentle float or a more adventurous ride they will be able to provide a heart-racing adventure!
