Welcome to Athens

Text Welcome to Athens
Equal measures of grunge and grace, Athens is a spirited mix of history and edginess. The Greek capital rewards open-minded travelers with spontaneous discoveries.
As you wander through the winding streets of Athens, you'll be transported to a world of ancient myths and legends. The Acropolis, with its towering columns and majestic temples, will leave you in awe of the city's rich history and culture. The Parthenon, one of the most famous landmarks in the world, is a sight to behold, with its intricate carvings and stunning architecture.
But Athens is not just about ancient history. The city is also a hub of modern culture and innovation. The vibrant neighborhoods of Monastiraki and Psirri are home to some of the city's best restaurants, cafes, and bars. Here, you can indulge in delicious Greek cuisine, sip on local wines, and soak up the lively atmosphere of the city.

Accommodation Ergon House for 3 nights
Completing this holistic hospitality experience built on the foundations of Greek Food, Ergon House offers contemporary living spaces spread over the floors above the marketplace. All rooms include the hotel's signature breakfast and come in four sizes, with privileged access to communal kitchens and lounges, a gym and a panoramic rooftop terrace.
The spaces are a collaboration with leading local designers and artists – the tribute to Greece ever-present in natural materials, traditional craft and references to the vernacular, paired with a strong contemporary line.
Large, double-glazed windows invite all the spectacle and none of the soundtrack to views of the Parthenon and city, or the buzz of the Agora. Seamless service is a given and we’ve done away with in-room dining because the whole Ergon House experience places food centre stage.
So, while the curated minibar delicatessen should tide you over, the Agora awaits some of the best food in town, or fresh market ingredients with which to make your own magic in one of the dedicated kitchens.

Your room: Small Room

Every comfort you need is considered in SMALL’s compact space with custom mood lights, fittings and furniture, arranged in an open layout that is loosely screened by the retro chic of breeze blocks used on the Greek islands in the ‘60s. The twin beds or a raised four-poster bed reminiscent of the traditional ‘ontades’ of Pelion is the centrepiece to ultra-contemporary interiors that feature an open closet and wireless work area.

Natural daylight floods through large double-glazed windows with atrium views as well as a glass brick feature wall. In the wet areas, walnut parquets transition to grey marble and patterned tiles inspired by medieval ‘xysta’ motifs found on the island of Chios. Beautiful basins, hand-carved from time-worn marble steps, are a pleasing contrast to sleek, brushed brass fixtures in a bathroom stocked with natural products that are custom-made for Ergon House.

Text Jaike's Athens Recommendations
If you’re like me then coming to the cradle of civilisation is like being a child in a candy shop. There’s no limit to the amount of Doric and Ionic temples, statues, vases and Archaic figurines we could devour before we get tired. In museums, you can see the ballot disks from Ancient Greek courts, and you can step into the Theatre of Dionysus, the very place where Euripides and Aristophanes staged their plays, or walk the Agora, knowing that your path will be the same once trodden by Plato and Socrates.
But Athens is far more than an archaeological site, from the jungle of concrete towers in the modern city to Plaka, a warren of alleys built over ancient Athens residential quarters. Punctuating the cityscape are hills like Mount Lycabettus and Philopappos Hill where you can get the lie of the land and see the Acropolis on its rocky throne.
For your day of leisure and self-exploration, I have added in some must-sees during your stay to inspire and excite you both.
Admire the Acropolis
Rising up from the center of Athens is the Acropolis, a fortified limestone plateau that is topped with the Parthenon and several other historical monuments. This is ancient, iconic Greece, the place where philosophers questioned the universe, democracy and freedom of speech were born, and temples were built to honor the gods.
The term “acropolis” refers to the fortified hill. Sitting on and around this hill are several very important sites. The Parthenon is the most famous, but there is also the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, and the Theater of Dionysus.
Get Lost in the Acropolis Museum
The Acropolis Museum is an archaeological museum that houses the artefacts found on the Acropolis and the surrounding slopes. This museum is located near the Acropolis. Lines can be long so it is best to purchase your tickets online in advance (tickets for the Acropolis Museum are sold separately from the Acropolis).
Stroll in Plaka
Plaka is a neighborhood in Athens that stretches from the Acropolis to Syntagma Square. This is one of the best spots in Athens to go shopping. Ermou Street is a pedestrian street lined with popular stores like H&M, Sephora and Mango. The older and more interesting streets are located closer to the Acropolis. The Anafiotika area is a charming, older section of Plaka with narrow, photogenic streets and shops.
Enjoy the Bustle in Monastiraki Square
This is a bustling, busy spot in Athens. It’s located in the heart of Athens, near Hadrian’s Library, the Ancient Agora, and just a short walk from the Acropolis. In this square is a Greek Orthodox church, a mosque, a metro station, the pillars of Hadrian’s Library, and a jumble of shops. On Sundays, a flea market dominates the square.
Take in the View from a Rooftop Bar
Numerous hotels offer rooftop restaurants, bars, and even swimming pools, which offer stunning views of the Acropolis. Our favorite rooftop restaurant was A for Athens. From here, look out over busy Monastiraki Square, the Ancient Agora, and of course, the Acropolis. From the rooftop restaurant at the Athens Gate Hotel, you get 360° views over Athens. Not only do you get a gorgeous view of the Acropolis but you can also look out over the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Mount Lycabettus. Finally, the Hotel Grande Bretagne has a rooftop restaurant with views over Syntagma Square and the Acropolis.
Iconic Views from Areopagus Hill & Philopappos Hill
Areopagus Hill, also known as Mars Hill, is a spot to get one of the most iconic views of the Acropolis. But this is more than a nice place to snap a photo. There is a lot of history and legend here. According to Greek mythology, this hill got its name from Ares, the god of war, who was tried here by the gods for the murder of Poseidon’s son Alirrothios. In ancient times, this was a meeting place where philosophy and law were discussed. It is also the location where the Apostle Paul gave one of his most important speeches.
Located just southwest of the Acropolis, Philopappos Hill (also spelt Filopappou Hill) is a hilly park laced with walking trails. The most popular viewpoint is located at the Monument of Philopappos, but you can also follow the other trails for a slightly different perspective of the Acropolis.
Explore the Trendy Psyrri
Psyrri (aka Psyri, Psiri, Psirri) is a funky, trendy little neighbourhood not far from Monastiraki. Filled with great restaurants, unique bars, vibrant nightlife, and small boutique shops, this is a very cool spot to go out for dinner and drinks. Grab a coffee or spoon sweets at Kalimeres. Go wine tasting at the Cinque Wine & Deli Bar. Have dinner at Lithos Tavern, a cosy restaurant that serves traditional Greek and Mediterranean food.
Admire the Ancient Agora & Temple of Hephaestus
he Ancient Agora is an archaeological site located near the Acropolis. For 5,000 years, this area was used as a marketplace, gathering place, and residential area. The ground of this large site is littered with the ruins of buildings and walkways. However, there are two important places to visit (the Temple of Hephaestus and the Stoa of Attalos). The Temple of Hephaestus is one of the best-preserved Greek temples. It was constructed in the 5th century BC to honor the god Hephaestus, the patron god of fire, metal working, and craftsmanship.

Text Welcome to Naxos
The largest of the Cyclades, Naxos offers you the chance to explore golden-sand beaches, whitewashed farming villages and ancient ruins. The island has played a vital role in Greek mythology — this is where Dionysus met and married Ariadne and it’s home to one of the (many) caves said to be where Zeus was born. More historically, this was an important ancient trading hub and you can visit significant archaeological ruins here. During the Middle Ages, the main town was a major stronghold for the Venetians and later the Byzantines, who left behind a rich architectural legacy that you can explore.
Today, Naxos is quieter than its better-known sisters. Boasting a fertile interior, it’s the main agricultural producer for other Cycladic Islands, and you’ll be able to visit small farming villages that have largely disappeared elsewhere in the archipelago.
