Welcome to Sigiriya

Text Welcome to Sigiriya
Rising dramatically from the central plains, the enigmatic rocky outcrop of Sigiriya is perhaps Sri Lanka's single most dramatic sight. Near-vertical walls soar to a flat-topped summit that contains the ruins of an ancient civilization, thought to once have been the epicenter of the short-lived kingdom of Kassapa, and there are spellbinding vistas across mist-wrapped forests in the early morning.

Day 1 - Sigiriya

Text Day 1 - Sigiriya
Touchdown in Sri Lanka, after you have collected your luggage, make your way to the Arrivals Hall where your private driver will be waiting for you.
Today's drive takes between 3.5 and 4 hours, offering dreamy views of rural Sri Lanka along the way. As you approach Sigiriya, you'll notice the landscape becoming more arid and rocky.
The road takes you through dry, open fields and scrubland, with occasional glimpses of wildlife such as peacocks and monkeys. The rocky outcrops and boulders in the distance hint at the majestic Sigiriya Rock, which dominates the skyline.

Accommodation Water Garden Sigiriya for 3 nights
The clue’s in the name: Water Garden Sigiriya is a liquid-lovely watery wonderland that puts the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya centre stage. Landscaped grounds with a multitude of ponds and streams take inspiration from Sigiriya’s 2,000-year-old water gardens; you can eye up the famous fortress as you explore them. After hot and humid days scaling world-famous rocks, nipping to cave temples and going elephant-seeking in national parks, you’ll appreciate the spacious, air-conditioned sleeping quarters, each of which occupies its own building (some have a private pool). A tranquil spa, relaxed restaurant and two-floor bar are your additional cues to come here.

Excursion Day 2 - Sigiriya Rock
This morning you'll wake up early and head to the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, ready for a morning climb and hike.
Sigiriya is a fifth century fortress in Sri Lanka which has been carved out of an inselberg, a hill of hard volcanic rock. It towers around 600 feet (182.8m) from the forest and gardens below, and has a flat top. This is where the palace of King Kasyapa once stood, reachable up a winding stone staircase. Today, you can climb the 1270 steps to see the well preserved ruins of Sigiriya, a UNESCO heritage site known as the eighth wonder of the world.
Set off early, before the sun gets too hot and the crowds arrive. At the base of the rock, you’ll pass through a series of beautifully manicured gardens. There are the water gardens, complete with fountains and ponds where people used to bathe. Then there are the boulder gardens, named for the large rocks scattered across the sun-dappled grass – they were once the foundations of an ancient monastery, built around the third century BC. But despite the beauty of the gardens, your eyes will be perpetually drawn back to the looming silhouette of Sigiriya itself.
Close to the top of the fortress, you’ll come across Lion’s Gate; a staircase with two huge stone lion paws on either side. There was once a lion’s face hewn into the rock as well, but it’s been eroded by the elements. This is how Sigiriya – which translates as ‘lion rock’ – got its name. Continue walking, and soon you’ll be at the top. This is where the palace once stood; you can still see the terraced palace gardens, and ancient walls and fortifications. The view over the surrounding jungle is incredible.
You'll return back to our hotel, ready for an afternoon of relaxation.

Text Welcome to Kandy
Some days Kandy’s skies seem perpetually bruised, with stubborn mist clinging to the hills surrounding the city’s beautiful centrepiece lake. Delicate hill-country breezes impel the mist to gently part, revealing colorful houses amid Kandy’s improbable forested halo. In the center of town, three-wheelers careen around slippery corners, raising a soft spray that threatens the silk saris worn by local women. Here’s a city that looks good even when it’s raining.

Excursion Day 4 - Sigiriya to Kandy
After breakfast, it will be time to check out of your hotel and be driven to the next dreamy luxury spot just outside Kandy. Your driver will collect you from your hotel and take you for the 3 hour drive to Kandy, where you will have the chance to enjoy a stunning city tour with one of our local guides in tow.
Protected by its geographic position and less-accessible terrain, the powerful ancient Kingdom of Kandy was able to hold off the advancement of both the Portuguese and Dutch colonisers through the 1500s and 1600s, becoming the last standing bastion of independent Ceylon. In doing so, the city was able to preserve the unique customs, culture, and arts that had been heavily subdued elsewhere in the country – until 1815 when it finally succumbed to British rule.
Today, that cultural preservation lives on in the city’s many significant cultural and historic sites, forming the basis for all the very best places to visit in Kandy. The best-known of these is the Temple of the Tooth relic; Buddhism’s most important religious shrine, and said to be the location of a portion of Buddha’s tooth.
Check-in to your hotel in Kandy and spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Formerly the home of an aristocratic Sri Lankan family, The Kandy House is a magnificent manor house turned boutique hotel with nine individually designed rooms. Located in Kandy’s tranquil outskirts, the hotel rests within exotic gardens home to an idyllic jungle swimming pool.
The hotel’s architecture is stunning; the chic interiors and one-of-a-kind antiques perfectly complement the elegant arches, pillared verandas, hardwood floors and central courtyard. Rooms feature four-poster beds, garden views and contemporary bathrooms yet are blissfully devoid of TVs and phones.
Guests tuck into Asian fusion cuisine and Sri Lankan curries on the rear veranda, which overlooks an emerald lawn shaded by tall creeper-draped trees teeming with butterflies and birds. Visible beyond the lawn is the jungle pool and an ambalama, which overlook a serene paddy valley.
The hotel offers Ayurvedic massages and private yoga sessions, and although Kandy’s sights may be reached in 20 minutes, there is plenty to do in the local area, from rural bicycle rides to strolls to the village’s ancient muralled temple.

Welcome to everyone’s favorite hill-country village, and the place to ease off the travel accelerator with a few leisurely days resting in your choice of some of the country’s best guesthouses. The views through Ella Gap are stunning, and on a clear night you can even spy the subtle glow of the Great Basses lighthouse on Sri Lanka’s south coast. Don’t be too laid-back though; definitely make time for easygoing walks through tea plantations to temples, waterfalls and viewpoints. After building up a hiking-inspired appetite, look forward to Sri Lanka’s best home-cooked food and a reviving cuppa.

This morning you will be privately transferred to Nanuoya, located around 2.5 hours away from Kandy. From here, you will catch a scenic train to Sri Lanka's tea country, undoubtedly one of the world’s most beautiful journeys in the world.
I have included Second Class seats for a very specific reason. First Class is air-conditioned, meaning the windows and doors don't open. In Second Class, you're able to hang out the window and really take in the spectacular scenery around you (and get a few snaps for Instagram, of course).
On the other side, you will be privately transferred to the spectacular Nine Skies, located in the heart of the tea country.

Comforting, refreshing, warming, very moreish: we could be talking about the perfect cuppa, but in fact it’s Nine Skies we have in mind. This boutique bungalow set on a working tea estate in the town of Demodara is a delicious tonic for body, mind and soul. Harking back to the region’s colonial days, rooms are styled with a refined British sensibility, but things are firmly Sri Lankan in the kitchen – and beyond your bedroom, where Hill Country’s emerald-green scenery beckons. Enjoy delicious rice and curries, take a dip in the view-toting pool and unwind in the snug library with a book or two. Just add tea (or a G&T from the honesty bar) when you’re thirsty.

The property has three Demodera Bedrooms with views onto the upcountry garden, and beyond, to the tea fields and verdant south eastern mountains. These bedrooms are furnished with a king-sized bed, a cosy sitting area, private veranda and an ensuite bathroom with a bathtub. Handpicked antique furnishings and custom-made pieces marry eclectic style with contemporary comfort.

Welimada is a warm, cosy bedroom bathed in light and is unique for its twin aspect valley-side and garden facing views. The private veranda gazes west, offering vistas of the working tea factory and Demodera Loop. Badulla, to the front of the bungalow, is private and indulgent, and opens directly onto the garden and swimming pool through a set of French windows. Tucked off the central hallway, Hali-Ela bears similarities to the Badulla Bedroom yet has the option of being connected with its neighbouring twin bedroom, Nine Arches, to make a Family Suite.

Lavish mop-topped huts are a little more ‘born with a silver spoon’ than ‘raised by wolves’ – each has a private plunge pool, freestanding bath tub and climate control – but, set in seclusion amid the trees, the call of the wild can be answered swiftly.
