About your itinerary

? Don't forget that if something isn't quite right we can make changes to the itinerary.
Thank you so much for your email yesterday about your amazing travel plans to head over from Ireland on the ferry to the amazing Basque Country in both Spain & France.
I am delighted to enclose your personalised itinerary, and happy to advise we are on the lower end pricing of how much you are looking to spend so I hope that this is a great start to what you are looking for.
To match up with the ferry crossing departures, and to ensure you made the most of your time, I have added in three stays; to start you will be in one of the most dog-friendly cities in Europe, Bilbao, where you will be on the cusp of some of the most dramatic coastline, filled with many sweet villages that you can drive out to.
Then you will continue to Bordeaux, for a special 5* stay in a luxury Chateau in the heart of Saint Emilion, as well as plenty of wine to enjoy together. To finish, it wouldn't be right to not enjoy a stay in the cosmopolitan beachfront town of San Sebastian – with the beach, dog-friendly experiences and pinxtos, what is not to love?
After much research and looking into the best properties that offered both pet-friendliness, a stunning spa & were 4/5* luxury, it was pretty tricky to find properties that offered both in the countryside outside of the cities of Bilbao & San Sebastian, so you will see that the properties I have selected both to start and at the end are fabulous, but are based more in town. Both offer secure parking setups, and I have upgraded you to terraced rooms so you have gorgeous views and plenty of space. I appreciate though if this isn't your ideal and we can always go back to the drawing board about this should you wish to.
To make sure you are making the most, I have added some wonderful tours, with depending on the size of your dog, the option to bring your pup along with you.
I did want to note that the Chateau Grand Barrail is already looking pretty full for your dates in September, so if you love this option, I definitely think we will need to move fast to confirm.
I also wanted to advise that your Brittany ferry crossing has an early bird rate attached, which will end on Friday, so your idea to plan early is perfect. Excited to hear your thoughts and of course on hand if you have any additional questions.
Best travels,
Maria Gardner

Text Welcome to the Basque Country
No matter where you’ve just come from, be it the hot, southern plains of Spain or gentle and pristine France, the Basque Country is different.
Known to Basques as Euskadi or Euskal Herria (‘the land of Basque Speakers’) and called El Pais Vasco in Spanish, this is where mountain peaks reach for the sky and sublime rocky coves are battered by mighty Atlantic swells.
It’s a place that demands exploration beyond the delightful and cosmopolitan main cities of Bilbao, Vitoria and San Sebastián. You travel through the Basque Country always curious, and frequently rewarded.

Text A Dog-Friendly Guide to Bilbao
Bilbao has been rated as one of the most dog-friendly cities in Europe, with many dog-loving travellers heading to the city every year with their pooches, so you will be in for a treat during your four night stay here.
I have a fabulous list of bars & restaurants, as well as things to do where your dog can also tag along for inspiration during your time in the city.
Bars:
  • Mr Marvellous – This bar serves a small selection of larger plates on top of the usual pintxos, and their house white Rioja is divine! It’s not huge, but there are some tables out the back where you can have a bit more space with your pup.
  • Morrocotuda – This lovely café comes with its own house-dogs who inhabit an area at the back of the place. With delicious sandwiches, meats and a good beer selection, this is a good option for lunch. Their Dalmatian is boss-dog and loves a bit of attention.
  • La Roca – This bar and restaurant has a great separate bar area, perfect for dogs. Stop by for a pre-dinner g&t and some top-quality pintxos too.
  • Culmen – This tiny bar on Plaza Nueva doesn’t have any indoor seating, but the outdoor plaza seating is wonderful and your dog is sure to get fussed by the staff.
Things to Do
  • Artxanda Funicular – Whilst you wouldn't expect a funicular to be dog-friendly, this funicular up to Mount Artxanda has a dog-friendly compartment. This long funicular takes you up to the Mount Artxanda lookout, which allows you to see the whole of Bilbao. It is an instagrammers paradise too, with helpful ‘Bilbao / Bilbo’ signs along the perimeter.
  • Riverfront Walk – Bilbao has developed the waterfront along the Nervión River & Bilbao Estuary, making it a gorgeous place to walk. Perfect for a jog or morning walk with your pup, there is lots of public art and seating areas too. The Zubizuri pedestrian bridge is a lovely feature too.
  • Shopping – you will find that many non-food shops will allow you in with your dog, but it is always worth asking "con perro?" (with dog?) where they will give you the green light to come in. If you have a smaller dog, then you will find you won't need to ask!
Transportation
  • Trains & Trams – Dogs of any size can ride the trams and local commuter trains, provided they are on a leash or in a transporter bag.
  • Bilbo Buses – Only dogs in carriers or bags are allowed.
  • Bilbao Metro – No dogs over 8kgs are allowed, and they must not touch the floor or use up a seat on the metro.
  • Taxis – Aitziber Taxis proudly offer dog-friendly taxis, but it is best to book in advance to ensure you can be accommodated.

Excursion Bizkaia Coast, Countryside and Gernika Tour | Private
As there is so much to explore and discover in the Basque Country, I wanted to give you the chance to leave Bilbao and really discover some of the other coastal highlights with one of our expert guides. You will be collected from your hotel for a wonderful full-day experience to explore the rugged green coast and countryside of this region.
Your first stop on your private tour will be in the historic town of Gernika. This city holds immense political importance for the Basque people. Local politicians have made important national decisions here for nearly 1000 years. The city has historical significance as the sight of a horrific aerial bombing in 1937. This day in history was the inspiration for Pablo Picasso’s famous Guernica painting that portrays this infamous day.
Additionally, you will also visit the Tree of Gernika, where the Basque democracy originates and still has tremendous importance to this day. The provincial government of Bizkaia has their parliament building here as well.
Your next stop is the quaint village of Mundaka right at the mouth the scenic Oka River overlooking Bay of Biscay. From Mundaka, you will be afforded amazing views of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This estuary is one of the most naturally beautiful sites in the entire Basque Country. The small fishing port is also home to a world-class surf break known the world over amongst surfers.
Bermeo, with its beautiful multi-colored buildings, is just a short drive west of Mundaka. The old town is lined with centuries old multi-colored houses that make for a unique photo opportunity. This town also has an active fishing fleet, and was once an important whaling port for the Basques.
Your next stop on the Basque coast is at the 10th-century hermitage of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, which is an incredible feat of structural engineering. This small church sits at the pinnacle of a small island connected to the coast only via a small stone bridge. Gaztelugatze was also predominately featured in season 7 of the acclaimed television show Game of Thrones. There are many sites in Basque Country where the series was filmed. You will also stop in the nearby town of Bakio for nice local lunch or pintxos if you prefer.
On your way back to your hotel you will be taken along the scenic route through the Basque mountains and small towns that dot the countryside. A truly memorable day.

This morning, be sure to have a heart-filled breakfast as today you will be in for a special treat, discovering the gorgeous vineyards around Bordeaux with your expert guide and your dog.
The Saint-Emilion wine district with its undulating hills is known to be the most scenic of the Bordeaux wine districts. Estates here are small and often family owned but both prestige and history are in the air. Merlot is predominant in the Saint-Emilion blends.
Your guide will greet you at your hotel ready to be driven into the heart of the French countryside for a fabulous tour and tasting of your first Chateau. After some time discovering insider stories of the Chateau in Pomerol, you will then be driven along the winding roads to Saint Emilion for another fabulous tasting.
By this stage, you may be in need of some lunch – your guide will be delighted to advise the best spot to grab some tasty food in either a dog-friendly gourmet restaurant, in a chateau, or in a bistro (paid locally) offering fresh produce, great wines by the bottle or by the glass, and a charming atmosphere.
After lunch, your guide will invite you both for a lovely walk around the enchanting medieval village of Saint-Emilion (UNESCO world heritage) with its narrow, cobbled streets is part of the tour. It's a key venue in the region that you don't want to miss!
Throughout the day, you will be introduced to the otherwise tightly-knit world of wine in Bordeaux. You can simply lean back and enjoy the beautiful scenery, the enchanting architecture, and learn about the secrets behind the terroirs and winemaking in chateaux that your guide has carefully pre-selected, making it a very bespoke and special experience together.
After an amazing day, your guide will drive you back into Bordeaux and drop you back at your hotel for a relaxing evening of leisure.
**Please note that Chateaus are welcoming to small dogs that can fit into your bag or a travel case, however bigger dogs will be unfortunately not able to join. If you have a dog that is bigger than those that can fit in a travel case, we can opt for an afternoon half-day tour of Saint Emilion for wine tasting, which will mean you can go without the dog and not be gone for too long.

No trip to San Sebastian is complete without exploring, tasting and immersing yourselves in the real tradition of pintxos and txikiteo, that are already in danger of extinction.
Pintxos are a true hallmark of Basque cuisine, being authentic miniature works of art that delight any food lover. Pintxos provide any Basque bar with personality and sense. To get acquainted with this old local custom of the traditional "Txikiteo" your expert foodie guide will take you to the last old taverns, that are already in danger of extinction, so you can enjoy savouring the best classic pintxos of San Sebastian.
From one bar to the next, enjoy the atmosphere of the street and know the different peculiarities of the city such as gastronomic societies, the oldest building, the most important parties and try to practice the oldest local sport, if you want, of course.
Your guide will take you to the taverns when they are quiet so you can really get to know the owners of these bars and be able to really see and hear the stories that these incredible establishments tell. With amazing food choices and wine throughout, this will be a culinary journey that hits the heart.
**Please note that due to the nature of this tour, our guide will do their best to create a route with the pinxtos bars that will be happy to welcome your dog inside, but there may be a number of bars where you may have to stand outside with your tastings. It rarely rains in September, and pintxos tasting tends to be on your feet so I don't believe this should be a problem, but wanted to let you know just in case.
