Today, your guide will take you to Tiananmen Square. Built under the guidance of Chairman Mao Zedong, it is one of the largest public squares in the world, said to hold a capacity of over one million. Here, you may get the opportunity to watch locals engage in a routine of square dancing before passing Chairman Mao's Mausoleum.
Next, explore the Forbidden City which was originally constructed in the 15th century and consists of almost 1,000 buildings. Its palatial architectural style has been an influence on many imperial buildings in Asia.
The Hutong districts of Beijing are the original residential areas of the city with old buildings lining narrow streets. Hutongs were designed to reflect the Chinese system of Feng Shui with four hutongs joining together to make a courtyard in the middle, known as Siheyuan. Explore one of the hutongs by taking a leisurely stroll around the carfree alleyways soaking up the atmosphere of a time long past and watch for the local people shopping in the small stores, playing with their children or engrossed in a game of mah-jong.
You will visit one of the local Hutong families. And you will have the experience of the art of making dumplings, a common local dish. Here, you will learn how to make dumplings like the locals do. You will also learn how to make Chinese Knots and learn more knowledge about this art.

Day 3 - Great Wall of China
Day 3 - Great Wall of China
Today, visit the Great Wall of China, the most iconic attraction in the country. The section you will visit is at Juyongguan. Draped over a great mountain pass, Juyongguan is the closest section of the Great Wall to Beijing, just 31 miles. This section of the wall was built by the Ming Dynasty over the 5th-century ruins of a previous wall and then due to its important strategic location it was restored frequently over the years, so is in good condition today.
Explore one of China’s most symbolic and important materials: jade, at this comprehensive factory. Whilst at the Jade Factory, you will learn how to tell if jade is real or fake and watch artisans at work, carving this emerald stone into works of art.
Visit the Summer Palace, the largest and most well-preserved royal park in China with over 3,000 man-made ancient structures. The palace is the former residence of many of the Qing Emperors and hosts a stunning example of a Chinese garden and incorporates the Fengshui notion of ‘Mountain’ and ‘Water’. Join a boat ride across Kunming Lake (weather permitting) to the decorative marble boat from where you may return via the Long Corridor, one of the longest outdoor passageways in the world.

The journey takes around four hours so there is plenty of time to soak up the scenery and fill your camera’s memory card.

Continue to the Yu Gardens, a perfect example of the traditional Chinese gardens. Built by the Ming-era governor, Pan Yunduan, as a retirement gift for his father, the Yu Gardens is home to exquisite jade rock, goldfish-filled ponds and stunning, tranquil pavilions.
The Silk Factory is an educational journey through the production of silk, one of China’s most famous and luxurious materials. Learn about the use of silkworms and silk moths in its production; as well as silk’s journey along the Silk Road which brought this product across Asia and Europe. It is a condition of booking with Out Of Office that you have adequate insurance cover for your trip at the time of booking. Please also ensure you have referred to our terms and conditions which can be found at www.outofoffice.com/terms-and-conditions. Please note that as each booking is tailor-made for you we only confirm the itinerary once we have received a deposit. There is a small chance that availability on some items quoted may change. If this is the case we will book similar accommodation and let you know.
