About your itinerary

? Don't forget that if something isn't quite right we can make changes to the itinerary.
I am delighted to present you with your New Zealand & Australia honeymoon itinerary exploring this amazing country's North and South Island where breathtaking natural wonders and warm hospitality await you at every turn. From the snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps to the pristine beaches of the Bay of Islands, New Zealand offers a diverse range of experiences that will leave you awe-inspired. Along with spending New Year's Eve in the heart of Sydney for one of the world's most impressive celebrations and displays of fireworks.
For your journey from North to South as you will be driving I have included recommended stops along the way. New Zealand is such an incredible country and there are so many beautiful things to see It's the perfect opportunity to tick off as many sites while traveling between the areas.
As you will see throughout the itinerary I have included some truly incredible experiences to enhance your honeymoon to the absolute maximum. Including a beauitful wine tour, Hobbiton, an Alpine trek, the ultimate heli hike, and the incredible Milford sound.
I know this is such a special occasion for you both so I wanted to focus on luxury throughout, especially with the accommodation. As you can imagine availability is a little touch and go due to the time of year that you are traveling but I am pleased to say I have found some truly beauitful hotels for your stay. And I love that it's a mixture of classic and boutique hotels.
Once your time in New Zealand has come to an end, you will head to Sydney. You will be staying in my all-time favourite hotel in the city which is the QT Sydney that has such a beautiful design throughout. This will be the perfect hotel for your New Year's Eve in Sydney.
I appreciate this is coming in a little more than we discussed on the phone but with the addition of all the experiences, stunning 5* accommodation throughout, and with the addition to Sydney, I think It's the perfect itinerary for you both. Saying this there are plenty of ways to scale this back should we need to.
I cannot wait to hear both of your thoughts on this truly spectacular honeymoon and hopefully, we can get this in your diary before we loose out on any element of your honeymoon.

Text Welcome to New Zealand
Get ready for mammoth national parks, dynamic Māori culture, and world-class surfing and skiing. New Zealand can be mellow or action-packed, but it's always epic.
There are just 4.8 million New Zealanders, scattered across 268,021 sq km: bigger than the UK with one-fourteenth of the population. Filling in the gaps are the sublime forests, mountains, lakes, beaches and fiords that have made NZ one of the best hiking (locals call it 'tramping') destinations on the planet. Tackle one of the epic 'Great Walks' – you might've heard of the Heaphy and Milford Tracks – or spend a few hours wandering along a beach, paddling a canoe or mountain biking through some easily accessible wilderness.

After our chat I know you are very keen to know the best restaurants in each area you will be staying and traveling through, so I have put together a mix of amazing places to grab a bite. From Michelin stars to more local authentic places, there is plenty for everyone in Auckland! I can also reserve the restaurants on your behalf nearer the time!
PASTURE
There are only 25 seats and there's only one option: a ten-course degustation served by the chefs themselves. You will taste combinations of flavor and texture you’ve never experienced anywhere else, with a bias towards traditional techniques like open fire cooking, fermenting, pickling and preserving. Ed and Laura Verner love connecting land, sea, producer and diner for an all-round food lovers dream.
MR ZHOU'S DUMPLINGS
The dumpling wars have been raging for some years in Auckland but places like Mr Zhou’s are perennial favourites (Barilla and Eden Noodles are also very popular just a couple of streets away on Dominion Road – Auckland’s Asian food capital). Inhaling a dozen pork and fennel dumplings bathed in your perfect mix of black vinegar, soy and chilli is a quintessential cheap and cheerful Auckland experience.
DEPOT EATERY
Al Brown is one of New Zealand’s best-known chefs and this stylishly casual joint has been consistently packed since the day it opened. Fresh, seasonal New Zealand produce and flavours are elevated with international influences to make shared plates interesting, but proudly unpretentious. Booking is advised! Try the lamb ribs with skordalia and cumin paprika oil or the famous hapuka sliders with pickled lemon mayo and watercress.
MASU
Masu suits anyone who loves Japanese flavours but is open to new interpretations on the theme. The black cod, grilled lamb cutlets and crayfish spicy miso tacos fly out the door. The menu tells you you’re eating high-end Robata-style Japanese sharing plates using the very best of New Zealand produce, but the attentive slick service, huge space and kick-ass fitout – complete with the theatre of a very open kitchen – make you wonder if you’re in New York, London or Melbourne.
GEMMAYZE STREET
Gemmayze Street is for anyone who loves sharing dishes packed with bold Middle Eastern flavours. As good for a fun date as it is for group, plates like octopus with pickled green chilli, coriander, pomegranate and squid ink or duck with red cabbage, fig, onion will blow you away.

Your evening at the culinary capital would not be complete without some seriously tasty delicacies! Here are our recommendations!
Atlas
An award-winning fine dining restaurant with a playful menu that dares diners to try something new and takes its inspiration from around the world! The upscale inner-city restaurant sprang from the ashes of recently closed Whitebait, with executive chef James Pask still at the helm. For Atlas, Pask has created both an à la carte menu and a seasonal tasting menu, which changes weekly. New Zealand ingredients are at the forefront, but he’s not averse to taking inspiration from all around the world, hence the restaurant’s name.
Rita
The Aro Valley restaurant loved by food critics and locals, that's practically perfect in every way. Rita is owned and run by a passionate duo who previously worked together at Nikau Café at Civic Square, where Kelda Hains' cooking with its Californian roots (she cites Chez Panisse and Zuni as influences) and Paul Schrader's incredibly warm and intuitive service made the café a celebrated Wellington institution.
Rita is set in an old workers' cottage on Aro Street in a colourfully alternative neighbourhood that is also home to local craft brewery, Garage Project. The narrow space has a minimalist fit-out with beautiful details: the cork-topped tables each have a drawer containing your cutlery and a mural by local graphic artist Sarah Maxey reads 'This heavenly place'.
Rita isn't a drop-in kind of a place, you need to book in for one of the two staggered seatings each night, so that the staff, led by co-owner and maître d' Paul Schrader, know exactly when to expect you. And once you arrive, the rest of your evening can be left in Rita's capable hands.
Hiakai
Celebrity chef Monique Fiso showcases indigenous ingredients at her Wellington degustation restaurant. The sophisticated boundary-pushing menus created by the HIAKAI team are challenging the status quo of Māori food in New Zealand, while playing a leading role in keeping Kai Māori and Polynesian food culture alive.
Highwater Eatery
A Saturday morning coffee, a long lunch or an evening of fine dining, it’s always a good time for a visit, come hell or highwater! Almost everything at Highwater is made in-house, from the bread and butter to the sausages and bacon. The menu is seasonal and changes regularly, harnessing local produce from suppliers focused on sustainable growing and farming practises. Sustainability is at the heart of Highwater’s philosophy. They have a focus on low-impact fishing, free-range meat, renewable energy and a commitment to biodegradable packaging, as well as composting.

Ferry from Wellington to Picton

Transfer Ferry from Wellington to Picton
After some time on the North Island, it's time to wave goodbye to the hills and prepare to say hello to the mountains! Take an early morning ferry from Wellington across the Cook Strait to Picton.
The ferry ride usually takes at least 3.5 hours, but the ferries that run this route are large with comfortable lounge chairs, large windows, and usually at least one cafe. Make sure to go out on deck once you reach the Queens Charlotte Sound, as the scenery is pretty spectacular!
The drive from Picton to Franz Jospeph is around 7 hours, but the drive is one of the most beautiful in the world.

Your first major stop will be in Punakaiki on the edge of Paparoa National Park. This is one of the most stunning parts of the West Coast, and in Punakaiki you'll find the famous Pancake Rocks.
These aren't just a couple of flat rocks, though – the area is full of stacks of the things, along with natural blowholes and some very Jurassic Park-esque scenery! After you spend some time on the loop trail here, Punakaiki is a good spot to stop for lunch.
From Punakaiki, continue south to the city of Greymouth, the largest city on the West Coast. Greymouth is home to Monteith's Brewery, one of the top craft breweries in New Zealand! Stop for a quick tasting if the time is right – let me know if you'd be interested in me adding a beer tasting tour!
After taking a short pitstop to stretch your legs, there are a couple more hours to the small town of Franz Josef Glacier, where you will be staying for 2 nights!

As you can imagine given the dramatic landscape, the food here compliments the area to a T! Here are some of my recommendations!
Alice May Restaurant
Piling on the charm with its faux-Tudor decor, Alice May is the classiest restaurant in town. Sure, the menu includes meaty NZ favourites, but they usually come with a gourmet twist, like pork roasted in wine and star anise, brie-topped chicken or rosemary and pumpkin risotto. Try to snag an outdoor or window table for sigh-worthy mountain views.
Snake Bite Eatery
SnakeBite's flavour-packed meals awaken taste buds after their long slumber through the West Coast's lamb-and-whitebait menus. Indonesian, Malaysian, Thai, Chinese and Japanese dishes all feature, along with burgers and pies. Try the mussel fritters with wasabi mayo and, the speciality, the beef-cheek rendang. Between courses, glug craft beers on tap or a 'snakebite' (cider with beer).
Monsoon
Sip drinks in the sunshine or within the cosy, chalet-style bar of the Rainforest Retreat, which usually buzzes with a sociable crowd of travellers. Bar snacks, burgers, curries, roasts, steaks and posh pizzas ensure you needn't move from your comfy spot by the fire.

Today you will be ready to drive from Franz Josef south on Highway 6 along the coast until you get to Haast. From there, you'll head inland and go over the Haast Pass, which is pretty stunning!
If you have time, I recommend stopping in Makarora to do the Blue Pools walk. This short walk includes traversing through a mature beech and podocarp forest, and then crossing two suspension bridges to see the beautiful clear blue pools.
From the Blue Pools, you'll soon be driving along the northern end of Lake Wanaka, followed by the west side of Lake Hawea. These lakes are absolutely beautiful, and you'll definitely want to pull over at at least a few of the viewpoints for some photos.
Whether you're coming straight from Franz Josef or have spent your morning and afternoon stopping for hikes and viewpoints, I recommend stopping in the lakeside town of Wanaka for some sightseeing and dinner.
Wanaka has become Instagram-famous in recent years for both its Roy's Peak hike, and for That Wanaka Tree, which grows out of the lake. You won't be able to hike to Roy's Peak in just a couple of hours, but at the very least you should have time to stroll along the lakeshore and see the Wanaka Tree, and then head back to the city center for dinner – there are lots of good restaurants to choose from, ones I can recommend are the following!
Ode
Ode pride themselves on an innovative menu with organic and local produce at the center of all their dishes. Venison, lamb, and goat sirloin are all interesting meat options. If you’re a seafood fan the fish of the day changes regularly and is dependant on what’s in season locally. For a true taste of the chef’s artistry, try the 8-course option. Called the ‘Ode Experience’ this option showcases the very best of what Wanaka has to offer. It is recommended you allow up to 3 hours for this!
Big Fig
Best described as healthy comfort food, Big Fig has been serving Wanaka locals and travelers for several years.
The Lebanese-inspired breakfast menu serves up fantastic fresh options like the Middle Eastern Granola and Shakshuka. For lunch and dinner choose your plate size, the meat you want, and between 2-4 sides and salads (depending on what size plate you picked). The slow-cooked meats are the hero on the menu here and expect a varied selection like lamb shawarma, beef cheeks, and meatballs. There’s also heaps of vegetarian options like vegan tagines, stuffed vegetables, and vegetable stews.
Bistro Gentil
Situated a few minutes drive from Wanaka, Bistro Gentil boasts the most spectacular view – and you may be dining surrounded by lavender depending on the season. It is truly a gorgeous location with views of both Lake Wanaka and the Southern Alps making it one of the most romantic restaurants in Wanaka. The focus here is on traditional French cuisine. For starters, there’s a varied selection from the must-try French onion soup with gruyere croutons or the Fromage board with imported cheese from France. The Te Mana Lamb, Confit Duck Leg, and Free Range Pork Belly are all excellent options from the main menu.
Kota Restaurant & Bar
A casual restaurant with fantastic views over Lake Wanaka. The menu has an Asian twist with pad thai, pork belly, and duck in an orange and soy glaze as some of the most popular options on the menu. This restaurant is relatively new and it was formerly The Landing restaurant. The dumplings with Asian slaw and kimchi dressing comes highly recommended.
Kika
Kika is a tapas-style restaurant with multi-award-winning Head Chef James Stapley at the helm.
Sharing style plates are the style here and all of the produce is seasonal. Smaller style sharing dishes like the seared tuna or beef tartare are excellent options whilst the larger plates like the Te Mana lamb shoulder or half roast chicken are again fantastic. For vegetarians, there’s Jerusalem artichokes, shiitake mushrooms, and more.
After a fantastic dinner in Wanaka, it is time to drive an extra hour to your next stunning stop, Queenstown where you will spend 2 nights.

Rātā
After gaining Michelin stars for restaurants in London, New York and LA, chef-owner Josh Emett now wields his exceptional but surprisingly unflashy cooking back home in this upmarket yet informal back-lane eatery. Native bush, edging the windows and in a large-scale photographic mural, sets the scene for a short menu showcasing the best seasonal NZ produce.
Blue Kanu
Disproving the rule that all tiki houses are inherently tacky, Blue Kanu serves up a food style it calls 'Polynasian' – Fijian kokoda (raw fish with coconut and lime) in one hand, XO pork dumplings in the other. It's relaxed and personable, and although the marriage of the Polynesian decor and chopsticks sounds impossible to pull off, it works.
Yonder
With a menu inspired by 'the things we've loved around our travels', this cafe brings to the table a cosmopolitan assortment of dishes: bacon butties, kimchi bowls, salmon poké bowls. There are power points and USB ports by many of the indoor tables, but when the sun's out you'll want to be on the outdoor patio.
Public Kitchen & Bar
You can't eat closer to the water than at this excellent lakefront eatery where local is law: Cardrona lamb, Fiordland wild venison, Geraldine pork, South Island fish. Grab a group and order a selection of plates of varying sizes from the menu. The meaty dishes, in particular, are excellent.
