I know you guys mentioned that you may wish to opt for the Blue Lagoon for your first day – it is great to shake off the jetlag, however the Blue Lagoon is close to the Airport and I wonder whether it would be more fun to consider a Golden Circle Tour, with the opportunity to relax in a Secret Lagoon halfway round.
From the Airport, follow the Reykjanesbraut/Route 41 towards the Golden Circle, steeped in history, and folklore and surrounded by amazing geology where it stands between the North American & Eurasian tectonic plates. Drive through Thingvellir, knowing you will be back later for one of the most popular bucket-list experiences here, snorkelling through tectonic plates! (Kids can snorkel from 12 years old+ so let me know if your boys are younger, trying to remember!)
GEYSIR GEOTHERMAL AREA
Travel from Thingvellir across the rugged landscape over to your first stop, the amazing Geysir Geothermal Area. Witness the heated waters of the most active Geysir 'Strokkur' erupting water from the depths every 10 minutes or so, reaching heights of 20-40 metres in the air. It is a truly remarkable sight to behold and a very rewarding and memorable experience that will stick with you for a lifetime. This stop will give you the chance to catch some gorgeous souvenirs and grab a snack before hitting the road for a short time once more to the famous Gullfoss Waterfall.
GULFOSS WATERFALL
This powerful waterfall is located in a plunging, ancient valley and tumbles down two drops, from an overall height of 32 meters (105 ft).
The minute you step out of your car, you can hear the breathtaking power of the water from this awe-inspiring waterfall and there is no doubt you will want to get the cameras out and share this mesmerizing hotspot with the world! Summer is the best time to visit this iconic waterfall, as this is when the water is at its heaviest and loudest!
KERID CRATER
After all this natural eye-catching scenery, you are sure to be feeling peckish at this point, so it will be time to catch some lunch before or after the next voyage on your adventure to the popular Icelandic crater lake, Kerid Crater. Known as the eye of the world, Kerid Crater is inside of a volcanic caldera and surrounded by rare red volcanic rock. It is easy to become spellbound by its big blue eye with all the beauty circling this fascinating lake.
LUNCH IN SELFOSS
Make a pit stop in Selfoss, just a 15min drive from the Crater and grab some lunch – whether you are looking for a sit-down or a quick takeaway, there are plenty of options here!
My favourites are:
Kaffi Krús – A well-established restaurant and cafe in the heart of Selfoss. They have a varied menu and a good selection of cakes and coffee.
MENAM Food Hall – Menam (the Dairy Farm) in Selfoss is a real food culture house. Eight restaurants, two bars and a cheese show in a 1,500 square meter space with seating for over 300 people.
**I would recommend calling in advance to reserve tables where applicable. Let me know if this is something you would like me to organise upon booking.
LAUGARVATN FONTANA
After lunch you will continue on to a more local hot spring that is super family friendly. Your experience at Laugarvatn is one you will be excited to enjoy to help aid jetlag! You have another drive to the Laugarvatn Fontana, a village that has been a place to bathe since Viking times as a geothermal hot spring is situated right by Lake Laugarvatn warming up the water.
Laugarvatn Fontana took the idea one step further and built their steam rooms on top of the bubbling hot spring making the experience truly Icelandic. Relax in the natural pools and hot tubs in between dips in the cold lake.
After an incredible day, you are sure to feel rather tired! Head back to Reykjavik for a much-needed restful night before another amazing day tomorrow.
