This ten-day itinerary moves through three distinct environments. Luleå, the largest city in Swedish Lapland, sits on the Gulf of Bothnia where the sea freezes solid enough to drive on in winter.
The Treehotel, one of the most architecturally remarkable places to stay in Europe, sits in forest outside the village of Harads.
Stockholm closes the trip. A city of fourteen islands connected by bridges and waterways, with a medieval old town that has been continuously inhabited since the 13th century. After a week above the Arctic Circle it will be quite a contrast.
Day by day
This is a sample plan, not a fixed departure. Days can be added, removed or reordered, and almost every client changes something. Prices are an entry-level guide; your quote will be exact.
Day 1: Luleå
A private transfer meets you at Luleå airport. The city sits well above the Arctic Circle and the winter light is unlike anything further south. The day is yours to explore at your own pace. Dinner at Hemmagastronomi, one of the city’s best restaurants, where the cooking draws on the produce and traditions of northern Sweden.
Day 2: Luleå
A guided boat tour through the Luleå Archipelago. In winter the sea freezes completely and the islands become reachable by car across the ice. Most are uninhabited; a handful support small communities that have lived on the ice-bound Baltic for generations.
Day 3: Luleå
A morning excursion to Gammelstad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site fifteen minutes from the city. One of Scandinavia’s best-preserved church towns: 424 wooden cottages built around Nederluleå Church in 1492, so that parishioners travelling long distances had somewhere to stay. Guided tour followed by time to explore independently.
Day 4: Treehotel
An hour’s drive south through the forest to the Treehotel outside Harads. A collection of individually designed tree cabins suspended in the pines above the Lule River: the mirror-clad Mirrorcube, the silver UFO seven metres above the ground, the Bird’s Nest invisible from below. Check in, take the guided tour of the property, and spend the afternoon in the forest.
Day 5: Treehotel
A moose safari by car through the surrounding forest, followed by a visit to Lars Eriksson, a Sami reindeer herder whose family has worked this land for generations. He talks about reindeer herding, the Sami relationship with the Swedish state, and what life in Lapland actually looks like across the seasons.
Day 6: Treehotel
A day in and around the property: snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and walks along the frozen river. In the evening, an ice dining experience on a frozen lake: a three-course dinner served on reindeer skins inside a heated tipi, candles burning, the forest silent around you.
Day 7: Stockholm
A flight south to Stockholm. The contrast on arrival is immediate: a capital of nearly a million people built across fourteen islands. Check in to your hotel. Dinner in Östermalm, which has some of the city’s best restaurants.
Day 8: Knowing Me Knowing You
A morning in Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s medieval old town: cobbled streets, the Nobel Museum, the Cathedral, and some of the city’s best specialist food shops. Afternoon at the ABBA Museum on Djurgården, a more serious cultural history exhibit than its subject matter might suggest.
Day 9: Stockholm
The day at your own pace. Södermalm has the most interesting independent cafes, galleries, and shops in the city, and the viewpoint at Monteliusvägen looks back across the water to the old town. In the evening, Trädgården, Stockholm’s celebrated outdoor club, if the season allows.
Day 10: Departure
Private transfer to the airport.
