London is a gateway to the world. It’s so diverse and it attracts over 20 million visitors each year. There’s a sense that you can meet anyone in London – which in no small part explains why it feels so exciting. There’s a buzz in this city that’s totally unique. It’s also packed with culture and gay nightlife, especially in the Soho area.
If London’s is the world’s gayest city in numerical terms, Berlin is certainly the queerest. Back in the days of the Weimar Republic (1918-1933), Berlin was packed with smoke-filled cabarets. It was a place of sexual experimentation. A place where the lines between gender and sexuality blurred. It remains a haven of queer culture to this day and it’s a major draw for gay travellers. If you’re looking to party then Berlin is the place to be.
Thailand is the unofficial gay travel capital of Asia. Bangkok is home to a big gay scene that attracts gay travellers from all over the world. Thailand is known as the Land of Smiles for a reason: it’s very friendly. You’ll also find buzzing gay scenes on the islands of Phuket and Koh Samui. A big cultural highlight of Thailand is Ayutthaya, the former capital. Abandoned in 1767, it’s full of enigmatic temples and ruins.
Gay travel in the USA offers many exciting opportunities. A perennial favourite for Out Of Office travellers is Provincetown. Located on the eastern tip of Cape Cod, it’s a charming bohemian town packed with artists and gay travellers. It’s the place to be in peak season – all the bars will be packed.
We send a lot of gay travellers to the Maldives, Dubai, Sri Lanka and Egypt – countries where homosexuality is illegal. How, you may ask, can gay travellers go to countries governed under Sharia law? The reality on the ground is often different to what you’d expect. As long as you’re discrete you shouldn’t have any problems. It’s risky for straight couples to show signs of affection publicly. It’s also untoward to express political bias (even waving the rainbow flag is ill-advised). As long as you conduct yourself in a relatively modest way in public you’ll be fine. We only work with the most gay-friendly hotels and tour guides, so you can expect a welcome reception and no awkward questions surrounding your sleeping arrangements.
We work with hotels in the Maldives that we have personally vetted. The Maldives’ many resorts are no subject to the same laws the govern the rest of the country. The resorts are essentially privately owned fiefdoms. Alcohol is illegal in the Maldives but it’s widely available at the resorts. Gay travel in the Maldives isn’t off-limits – you just have to find the right resort.

Gay travellers have long been drawn to Thailand. It’s one of the friendliest countries in the world and the de facto gay capital of Asia. Bangkok has a very lively gay scene and anything-goes nightlife. The Thai islands are also a big draw for gay travellers. Thailand offers the perfect combination of partying and cultural enrichment. Oh, and did we mention the food?
New Orleans is the home of voodoo, jazz and bohemia. It’s America’s spookiest and most enigmatic city. It’s a key stop-off on any gay travel itinerary around the USA. Mardi Gras takes place in February. It’s one of the most decadent – not to mention camp! – spectacles in the USA.
Gay travellers should head to Japan in March. It’s the month the cherry trees blossom, bringing vibrant colours to the landscapes. It makes for an ideal romantic backdrop. Tokyo has a big although discrete gay scene. Japan was never colonised so it’s culture is unique and defiantly Japanese.
Morocco has long been a gay travel hotspot. Surprising, considering its location and religious affiliation. None the less, gay travellers flocked there in the 50s and 60s. Tangiers was more accepting of gay people than London in those days. Astonishing when you consider that it was in living memory. April is a great time to visit as the weather is warm but not boiling.
Amsterdam emerges from winter and Keukenhof’s tulips bloom. The Netherlands was the first country to legalise homosexuality and also gay marriage. Amsterdam is a very liberal town. It’s super chic and also a great place to party. Machu Picchu is one of the most fascinating sights in Latin America. It was built by the Incas in the 15th-century as a mountain fortress and royal residence. After the fall of the Inca Empire, it was “rediscovered” hundreds of years later. Known as the Lost City of the Incas, it’s Peru’s biggest tourist attraction. June is the dry season so it’s an ideal month to visit Machu Picchu.
Gay travel in Greece is always a good idea. Way back in antiquity, Greece practically invented western civilisation. It also tolerated same-sex sexual activity – among men at least! Today Mykonos is the go-to place for upwardly mobile gays in the summertime. Combining Mykonos with Santorini and Athens is the most popular choice for gay travellers.
Gay travel in the UK is always a rewarding experience. The UK’s vast capital is a cultural melting pot and a huge draw for gay travellers. You can also explore other big cities, like Manchester and Edinburgh. To see an older, quainter side of the UK – think Downtown Abbey – then head to Bath.
September is one of the best months to visit Barcelona. The weather is divine and the city will be bustling with energy. Combining Barcelona with Sitges makes for one of the best twin-centre itineraries for gay travellers. Check out the masterworks of Gaudi in Barcelona and then enjoy Sitges’ gay scene.
Taipei is a great city and one of Asia’s less well-visited capitals. Taiwan was the first country in Asia to legalise gay-marriage and Taipei hosts Asia’s biggest annual gay pride celebration. Explore the night markets of Taipei and sail down Sun Moon freshwater lake surrounded by mountains.
As the western world experiences winter, South Africa experiences summer. It’s a great gay travel destination. Cape Town is the de facto gay capital of Africa. You’ll find a lively gay scene in the De Waterkant district. While in South Africa, you’ll no doubt want to take a safari trip and also visit the Winelands.
The weather averages 28°C in Cancun in December. A great choice if you’re looking to bask in some winter sun. Cancun is Mexico’s popular resort destination. It’s home to many all-inclusive hotels. Supposing you’d like a culture fix head to Chichen Itza and see the ruins of the Mayan Empire.
