South Africa is one of the few destinations that genuinely delivers on every front. The winelands around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek produce world-class Cabernet and Chenin Blanc from estates that also happen to be among the most beautiful properties on the continent.
Here at Out Of Office, we truly understand the world you live in, and the world you want to explore. Our attention to detail, exceptional service and deep understanding of both luxury travel and LGBTQ+ travel make us a fantastic choice for those looking for a travel experience where exclusivity meets inclusivity.
South Africa stands apart from the rest of the African continent when it comes to LGBTQ+ travel. It is the only country in Africa where same-sex marriage is legal, enshrined in the constitution since 2006, and the legal protections for LGBTQ+ individuals are among the most progressive in the world.
Cape Town in particular has built one of the southern hemisphere’s most vibrant gay scenes, with De Waterkant at its heart. For LGBTQ+ travelers looking to experience Africa, South Africa is the natural and obvious starting point.
Then there’s the wildlife: the Kruger and its private concessions, Sabi Sands, the Waterberg, and Madikwe offer Big Five safaris at lodges that sit comfortably alongside the best properties anywhere in the world.
What makes South Africa work as a luxury destination is the variety within a single trip. A two-week itinerary can combine three nights in Cape Town, a few days on safari in a private concession, and time along the Garden Route without feeling rushed.
The country’s internal flight network is efficient and the distances, while significant, are entirely manageable with the right planning.
From the US, Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa and Kenya Airways via Nairobi both offer reliable connections from multiple departure cities. From the UK, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic fly direct from London to Johannesburg and Cape Town in around 11 hours.

South Africa occupies the southern tip of the African continent, bordered by the Atlantic and Indian Oceans and sharing land borders with Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Eswatini. The country spans eleven official languages and an extraordinary range of landscapes, from the winelands of the Western Cape to the bushveld of Limpopo and the dramatic coastline of the Garden Route.
Most itineraries begin in Cape Town, one of the world’s great cities. Table Mountain frames the city from above, the Atlantic Seaboard stretches south toward the Cape of Good Hope, and the Winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek sit less than an hour’s drive away. Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela spent eighteen of his twenty-seven years in prison, is a short ferry ride from the V&A Waterfront and remains one of the most significant historical sites on the continent.
From Cape Town, the Garden Route runs east along the coast through George, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, combining forest, lagoon and ocean in a stretch of coastline that rewards a few days at a slower pace. Further north and east, the Kruger National Park and the private concessions bordering it — Sabi Sands, Timbavati, Thornybush — offer Big Five safari experiences at lodges that rank among the best in the world.
South Africa uses the South African rand, operates on SAST (UTC+2), and English is widely spoken across major cities, tourist areas and luxury properties.
South Africa is the most progressive country on the African continent for LGBTQ+ travelers by a significant margin. It was the first country in Africa to legalise same-sex marriage, in 2006, and its constitution explicitly prohibits discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity, one of the few in the world to do so.
Cape Town is the gay capital of Africa. De Waterkant, the city’s established LGBTQ+ neighbourhood, has a dense concentration of bars, clubs, restaurants and community spaces, and the Cape Town Pride Festival each March draws visitors from across the continent and beyond. The city’s broader culture is open, cosmopolitan and welcoming.
Outside the major cities, social attitudes can be more conservative, particularly in rural areas, and some discretion is sensible away from Cape Town, Johannesburg and the main tourist circuits. Within those areas, and across the luxury travel experiences that make up most Out Of Office itineraries, LGBTQ+ travelers consistently find South Africa to be one of the most comfortable and welcoming destinations in the world.
South Africa contains more outstanding travel experiences than most people manage to fit into a single trip, and the gap between a good itinerary and a great one usually comes down to the details.
The right lodge in the right concession makes an enormous difference on safari. In Cape Town, knowing which experiences are worth your time and which are tourist traps requires local knowledge that isn’t obvious from a Google search. Combining the city, the Winelands and a safari into a trip that flows naturally, without wasted travel days or mismatched pacing, takes more planning than it looks.
Out Of Office knows South Africa well. We match safari lodges to what you actually want from the experience, whether that’s the big game density of Sabi Sands, the exclusivity of a private concession in Timbavati, or a more intimate reserve closer to Cape Town.
We identify the Cape Town properties that suit your style, build in the right amount of Winelands time, and connect the whole itinerary so the journey between experiences feels as considered as the experiences themselves.
South Africa’s legal framework is the strongest on the continent for LGBTQ+ travelers, but knowing which lodges, wine estates and city hotels are genuinely welcoming rather than simply compliant makes a real difference to how a trip feels.
Out Of Office knows the properties where LGBTQ+ guests are not just accepted but actively celebrated, the safari camps where same-sex couples will feel completely at ease, and the Cape Town and Winelands experiences that have long been part of the gay travel circuit.
Few cities anywhere in the world can match Cape Town for sheer setting. Table Mountain rises directly above the city, the Atlantic Seaboard stretches south through Clifton and Camps Bay, and the Cape Peninsula runs down to the Cape of Good Hope with some of the most dramatic coastal scenery on the continent. The city itself is cosmopolitan, exceptionally well served by restaurants and hotels, and has one of the southern hemisphere’s most established gay scenes centred on De Waterkant. Robben Island sits a short ferry ride offshore, and the Winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are less than an hour’s drive away. Most South Africa itineraries begin here, and with good reason.
South Africa’s private concessions, the areas bordering Kruger where exclusive lodges operate on vast private land, offer a fundamentally different safari experience to a standard national park visit. Sabi Sands, Timbavati and Thornybush allow off-road driving, night game drives and walking safaris that aren’t permitted inside Kruger itself. Game density is exceptional, and the lodges, ranging from intimate tented camps to architecturally striking five-star properties, are among the best in the world. With far fewer vehicles in the bush and guides who know their concession intimately, sightings are longer, quieter and more personal.
Stellenbosch and Franschhoek sit less than an hour from Cape Town in a landscape of mountain ranges and valley floors planted with Cabernet, Chenin Blanc, Pinotage and Syrah. Franschhoek in particular has developed a restaurant scene that punches well above its size, with a concentration of serious kitchens along a single main street that makes it one of the best places to eat in the country. The estates themselves range from grand historic properties to small-production boutique wineries, and many offer accommodation that makes a night or two in the Winelands a natural addition to a Cape Town itinerary.
South Africa’s luxury travel offering is genuinely world class and consistently underestimated by first-time visitors. Cape Town has a strong collection of five-star properties, from the iconic Belmond Mount Nelson to design-led hotels on the Atlantic Seaboard with direct access to Clifton’s beaches. The standard of service, food and facilities rivals the best city hotels anywhere.
The Winelands take luxury in a different direction entirely. Franschhoek and Stellenbosch are home to some of the most beautiful estate hotels on the continent, with vineyards, mountain backdrops and exceptional restaurants on the doorstep. It’s no coincidence that the Winelands have become one of Africa’s premier destinations for high-end weddings and honeymoons. The combination of romantic landscapes, outstanding food and wine, and intimate estate properties is difficult to match anywhere in the world.
Safari in a private concession represents its own category of luxury. The best lodges in Sabi Sands, Timbavati and the Waterberg are not simply comfortable places to sleep between game drives. They are exceptional properties in their own right, with private plunge pools, outstanding cuisine, and a level of personal attention that comes from hosting a handful of guests at a time in tens of thousands of acres of private bush. For many travelers, a night at a lodge like Singita or &Beyond is among the most memorable hotel experiences of their lives.
