Homosexuality is regarded as a complex issue in much of Africa, but in South Africa it’s far easier. South Africa is the unofficial gay capital of Africa and you’ll find Africa’s biggest LGBTQ+ community in Cape Town.
Cape Town boasts a vibrant and open LGBTQ scene centered in lively neighborhoods like De Waterkant. Find buzzing nightclubs, cafes, beaches, and cultural events catering to the LGBTQ community. Cape Town prides itself on diversity and self-expression.
Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2006, and LGBTQ+ people are protected from discrimination by the constitution. However, negative social attitudes can persist in some rural areas of South Africa, so it’s wise to be cautious when heading outside of major cities.
Accommodation
A modern twist on traditional Khoi-San dwellings, these luxurious lodge suites come with infinity pools, a separate dining room and an open plan lounge and bar. You’ll have a traditional boma outside (a firepit and sitting area). There are 14 open plan suites at Kwena Lodge. Each one is around 70m2.
The Bush Villas And Fynbos Villas are like private homes. They’re ideal for families or larger groups. The layout is open plan and there are three or four bedrooms. All of the villas are very private and come with stunning and outdoor decks.
Stay in a luxurious African villa and have your own chef, butler and field guide. The villa is located within a part of the reserve that’s full of game. There are three luxury suites overlooking the rolling mountains. All meals and drinks are included. This is the most glamorous way to experience the African bush.

Dining Options
African boma breakfasts are served each morning. You’ll have veranda lunch platters, boma barbecues, picnics and outdoor sundowner dining options. The food is Pan African Cuisine and the wine menu is geared toward local wines from the Cape area.
