Without a doubt, Portugal is Europe’s most up-and-coming destination. It’s become hugely popular in recent years thanks to an influx of artists and creative industry, and that process continues to accelerate. Portugal is a fairly small country and a wonderful place to combine different areas into one all-encompassing trip.

For a taste of Portugal’s thriving urban centres, combine Porto and Lisbon into one twin-centre itinerary. Both of these port cities have a rich medieval history, with cobblestone streets and iconic squares all waiting to be explored. They also each have a vibrant and buzzing atmosphere, with a myriad of wonderful bars and restaurants where you can spend long nights sipping port and meeting the locals.

The Algarve is ideal if you’d like a more relaxing beach vacation complete with gently crashing waves and awe-inspiring cliff faces. There’s some gorgeous resorts here that specialize in wellness, with yoga and mindfulness sessions to help you feel calm and at peace. This region is also great for hiking, with coastal paths boasting views that will take your breath away.

Portugal is also home to a breathtaking array of luxury hotels and boutique properties which span a range of styles and sizes from charmingly rustic B&Bs to sprawling cliff-top resorts. The unique natural environments found throughout the country have fostered the emergence of several sports and leisure industries such as golf and surfing – both of which can be explored and enjoyed with one of Out Of Office’s tailor-made itineraries.

In addition to stunning scenery, there are lots of high-end hotels to stay at, ranging from boutique properties to all-inclusive resorts.

Portugal is also a great destination for LGBTQ+ travelers thanks to its progressive equality laws and rapidly changing social attitudes. You’ll find a big LGBTQ+ community in Lisbon and a plethora of gay bars and clubs to enjoy. There are also gay beaches and LGBTQ+-focused resorts throughout Portugal and a calendar of annual pride events to discover.

Fill your days with sun, surfing and sand and your evenings with casual dinners and live entertainment available in any of Portugal’s local towns. Head to the beach bars and discos and dance the night away under a starlit sky. The Algarve is also home to several beautiful castles, so if you fancy a break from the beach, there are plenty of cultural activities to explore.

Portugal’s capital Lisbon has a wonderful culture hidden behind its fortified walls. This gothic yet glamorous city is a lovely addition to tag onto your beach vacation and there are plenty of iconic sites to see and fascinating experiences to indulge in, including a trip to the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos Lisbon’s most famous monastery. Visit the Castelo de São Jorge – one of Lisbon’s famous castles, built in the 2nd century BC and gradually expanded in the years since.

The state of LGBTQ+ rights in Portugal improved dramatically in the 2000s and queer people in the country now enjoy a suite of legal protections that are among some of the best in the world. Portugal boasts a world-leading approach to recognising gender in law and travelers can expect to feel safe and accepted throughout their trip.

Portugal is home to no shortage of gorgeous coastal environments, but if you are looking for a great beach vacation then the Algarve is the perfect destination. Along with the beautiful sandy beaches, awe-inspiring cliff faces and warm Mediterranean sea, the Algarve has a lot to offer in terms of culture and entertainment. The Algarve boasts a stunning array of castles, forts and ancient monasteries as well as a string of small coastal towns littered with a plethora of intimate nightlife spots and boutique hotels.

Why not pair your sunny beach vacation with a stop in Lisbon, the country’s capital? After the tranquil landscapes of the Algarve, Lisbon promises to offer a dose of cultural stimulation and colourful excitement. There are plenty of unmissable spots to visit as a couple, solo traveler or even with the entire family.

Pico island is located in the middle of the North Atlantic Sea but is still a part of Portugal’s national territory. This tiny island can be reached via Lisbon, and is also home to the highest mountain in the country. The off-the-beaten-track island is a great addition if you are looking to visit somewhere unique that makes for stunning photographs and is great if you want to avoid tourists.
