Embark on an 11-day journey around the stunning Galápagos. You’ll sail on the National Geographic Endeavour II, which promises an immersive and intimate escapade for just 96 guests. Discover the Galapagos’ rich wildlife, active volcanoes, and expansive Marine Reserve, all in the company of like-minded travellers.
Your LGBT+ adventure starts in Quito, celebrated for its impeccably preserved historic centre. Elevated at 9,350 feet, Quito’s charm is rooted in its 16th-century origins, built atop an ancient Inca city. You’ll then fly to Baltra Island, followed by a ferry ride to Santa Cruz Island. Here, delve into the islands’ verdant highlands and encounter the legendary giant tortoises at the Charles Darwin Research Station.
Your voyage then sets course for the idyllic Santa Fe Island, where sandy white beaches and sea lion harems await. Continue to South Plaza Island, home to land iguanas and vibrant marine life. North Seymour Island offers a unique blend of bird colonies, sea lions, and marine iguanas, while Santa Cruz Island’s white beaches provide perfect snorkeling opportunities. Bartolomé Island’s volcanic landscapes and wildlife-rich waters are not to be missed.
Concluding the cruise, return to the mainland for a tranquil night in Guayaquil. This tropical city, nestled by the Guayas River, is Ecuador’s commercial heart.
Ecuador is considered progressive in South America regarding LGBTQ+ rights, making significant strides in recent years. Same-sex sexual activity has been legal since 1997, and in 2019, the country legalized same-sex marriage following a ruling by the Constitutional Court. This decision made Ecuador one of the few countries in the region to offer full marriage equality, allowing same-sex couples the same legal rights as heterosexual couples.
The country also provides anti-discrimination protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity, enshrined in its 2008 constitution. These protections extend to employment, education, and public services, reflecting a legal framework that supports equality. Additionally, transgender individuals in Ecuador can change their gender markers on official documents without requiring surgery.
Despite these legal advancements, societal attitudes towards LGBTQ+ individuals vary widely. In urban areas like Quito, Guayaquil, and Cuenca, there is greater visibility and acceptance, with LGBTQ+ advocacy groups, inclusive nightlife, and Pride events fostering a sense of community. However, in more rural and conservative areas, traditional values can lead to stigma and challenges for LGBTQ+ individuals.
Activism remains a key driver of progress in Ecuador, with organizations working to promote awareness, challenge discrimination, and push for broader acceptance. While challenges persist, Ecuador’s legal achievements and growing visibility of the LGBTQ+ community highlight the country’s progress toward a more inclusive society. For LGBTQ+ travelers, Ecuador offers a mix of natural beauty, vibrant culture, and welcoming spaces, particularly in its more urban regions.
