In Cambodia, same-sex relationships are legal, same-sex marriage is banned and there are no legal protections against anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination. Equaldex gives Cambodia an Equality Index of 48 out of 100.

Cambodia is generally relaxed about same-sex couples. Same-sex relations have never been criminalized, Cambodians tend to be tolerant and private about such things, and Phnom Penh and Siem Reap both have small but visible LGBTQ+ scenes.
There is no legal recognition for same-sex couples and no specific protection against discrimination, but travelers on a well-planned trip are very unlikely to notice. The hotels we use in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and on the coast are used to international couples sharing a room.
Public affection of any kind is uncommon in Cambodia, particularly at temples and in rural areas, so keep it for the hotel. Cambodia combines easily with Vietnam, Laos and Thailand, which has one of Asia’s biggest gay scenes.

Although Cambodia is a very welcoming and stable country now, it has a dark past. In the 1970s the country was ruled by the Khmer Rouge regime. During that time over a million Cambodians were killed.
Their troubled past has shaped the way Cambodians act towards each other, and there is a real sense of gratefulness. In Phnom Penh, see the Royal Palace, the Genocide Museum and The Killing Fields. It is a very important part of their culture so it’s worth a visit.
After seeing the capital, Phnom Penh, head to Siem Reap, which is known as the capital for temples as it is home to the majestic Angkor Wat. The temple is so important that it even is part of the national flag.
