Travel Information for Norway

General Information

Norway is one of the best places to visit on earth for those wanting to see the Northern Lights. This fascinating and breathtaking country is blessed with some of the world’s most beautiful green landscapes, sweeping snow-capped mountain ranges, and vast lakes. All of this world-class scenery makes Norway a fantastic choice for thrill-seekers and luxury relaxers alike.

Norway’s capital city Oslo is somewhat of an undiscovered gem that boasts an eclectic skyline of modernist monuments and traditional wood-clad houses. Oslo’s cosmopolitan character is the perfect tonic to the striking scenery found throughout the country’s rural landscapes, and the city also possesses an abundance of luxury properties ranging from trendy boutiques to grand bastions of traditional elegance.

You’ll find the bulk of Norway’s compact gay scene in Oslo, but LGBTQ+ travelers will be struck by the country’s inclusive spirit wherever they look. The Norwegians are too busy being rich and happy to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, and LGBTQ+ Norwegians enjoy a strikingly equitable set of rights and legal protections. Norway’s fascinating history can be traced back thousands of years and one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of Viking Norway is through a trip to the Viking Ship Museum. Here you can see some of the remains from that kinetic time covering 793-1066 AD, when Viking raiders terrorized much of the world from their Scandinavian bases. Whilst in Oslo be sure to head to the Fram Museum for some discovery about the history of Norway’s polar expeditions. Oslo also has one of the best food and drink scenes in Scandinavia with a sumptuous mix of traditional restaurants and innovative flavour palaces.

Norway LGBTQ+ Rights

Norway stands as one of the most progressive countries in the world when it comes to LGBTQ+ rights, exemplifying Scandinavia’s modern and inclusive approach to sexuality and gender. In 1981, Norway became one of the first countries globally to enact an anti-discrimination law specifically aimed at protecting LGBTQ+ individuals. This groundbreaking legislation laid the foundation for a society that values equality, and it was followed by the legalization of same-sex sexual activity in 1972, long before many other countries in Europe.

Further advancements in LGBTQ+ rights came in 2009 when Norway legalized same-sex marriage, providing full legal recognition and the right to adopt children for same-sex couples. Additionally, Norway offers one of the most inclusive gender recognition laws, allowing individuals to change their legal gender without requiring surgery, which was introduced in 2016.

Cultural acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals is widespread in Norway, and the country has a vibrant LGBTQ+ community. Pride events, including the Oslo Pride Parade, are celebrated with enthusiasm, drawing large crowds each year. Public life in cities like Oslo, Bergen, and Stavanger is welcoming, with many queer-friendly bars, clubs, and cultural spaces fostering an inclusive environment.

For LGBTQ+ travelers, Norway is a safe and affirming destination, with its robust legal protections, progressive policies, and open-minded society ensuring that all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, can enjoy their time freely. Norway’s combination of natural beauty, cultural richness, and commitment to equality makes it an ideal place for LGBTQ+ tourism.

Things to do in Norway

Hiking

Going for a hike in Norway is an exciting experience, perfect for those seeking thrilling outdoor adventure combined with breathtaking scenery. With a huge variety of trails on offer, ranging from coastal paths to mountainous climbs, there’s something for all levels of ability. Research your trip ahead of time to choose the best trail that suits your personal preferences and physical needs. Popular routes include Trolltunga, Preikestolen, Romsdalseggen Ridge, and Besseggen Ridge.

The Viking Ship Museum

The Viking Ship Museum in Oslo provides a window into the intriguing world of the Vikings. Home to three authentic 9th-century ships, this museum is visited by history lovers and curious adventurers alike. Admirers can gaze upon beautiful carvings and learn about construction methods used in Viking times. For a truly interactive experience, take a guided tour or row a replica ship in the nearby area. Spend an afternoon here and embark on an unforgettable journey; explore the ancient relics and delve into the captivating history of these seafaring warriors.

Skiing

For the winter enthusiast, Norway is a top destination for skiing. With numerous ski resorts offering lessons throughout the year, it’s important to book your accommodation and ski spots in advance. From beginner lessons to advanced skiers, you’re sure to find an instructor that suits your needs. Skiing in Norway also offers a chance to experience its culture and history at local villages, with traditional cuisine and friendly locals.

Aurora Borealis

Those hoping to have an unforgettable view of the Northern Lights should seek out spots unspoiled by light pollution. Sites farther away from cities and towns typically offer better visibility, as do places with mountains in the background. Norway is particularly known for its stunning shows of the Aurora Borealis, and some of the most popular viewing locations are Tromso, Narvik, and Lofoten.

If you’re looking to see the Northern Lights in Norway, your best bet is during the winter months from October to March. At this time of year, there is less light pollution and more hours of darkness that make it easier to spot the Aurora Borealis. Be sure to dress warmly though and keep an eye on weather forecasts in order to enjoy clear skies for peak viewing.

Since it gets cold during the winter nights, make sure you have dressed appropriately in warm layers if you plan on waiting for hours for this celestial display. You’ll need gloves, boots, scarves and hats along with your coat as well as your camera or binoculars. Capturing the beauty of the Northern Lights with those tools is essential.

To capture the spectacular beauty of the Northern Lights, always remember to bring your camera and video recorder. Utilizing a tripod and taking as many shots as possible with an adjusted ISO, shutter speed, and white balance will result in better-quality images. Having extra memory cards on hand is also suggested since long exposure shots require large files. By doing all this, you are sure to have a great record of this amazing natural phenomenon.
