Tanzania is home to some of Africa’s finest safaris and beaches, but it is a difficult country for LGBTQ+ people. Same-sex relations are illegal and can carry very long prison sentences, there is no recognition or protection, and the authorities have periodically cracked down on LGBTQ+ people and advocacy.

Visitors on safari in the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater or the southern parks, or staying at Zanzibar’s resorts, rarely encounter problems, and the camps and hotels we use are used to international couples. Discretion is essential, though: no public affection outside your tent or room, care with dating apps and with what you post, and particular care in Zanzibar’s Stone Town, which is conservative and Muslim.
