Luxury Travel Expert"Personally, I believe that no trip to India is complete without a visit to Jaipur. Known as The Pink City, Jaipur is where India's culture and colour are at their most vibrant. It's my go-to Indian city. "
Contact usIndia operates across a single time zone, Indian Standard Time, five and a half hours ahead of GMT and nine and a half ahead of the US East Coast. The half-hour offset catches many travellers off guard when coordinating international connections.
The country is vast and domestic travel requires planning. The distances between major destinations are significant: Delhi to Mumbai is around 1,400 kilometers, Delhi to Kerala considerably further. For multi-region itineraries, domestic flights are the practical option for most legs, and India has a well-developed internal aviation network connecting all major cities and many secondary destinations. Private transfers between airports and hotels in India’s major cities require more time than the distance suggests; traffic in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore can be severe and journey times should be built into the itinerary realistically.
India uses Type C, D and M plug sockets. Voltage is 230V. US and UK travellers will need adaptors, and US travellers a voltage converter for non-dual-voltage appliances.
The currency is the Indian rupee. International credit cards are widely accepted at luxury hotels, restaurants and upscale retail, but cash is useful for markets, smaller restaurants and tipping. Tipping is expected and appreciated: around ten percent in restaurants, and similar for drivers and guides who will typically accompany travellers throughout an itinerary.
Food and water safety is worth taking seriously. Luxury hotels maintain high standards, but bottled or filtered water is advisable throughout, and street food, however appealing, carries risk for travellers without established immunity.
India’s LGBTQ+ rights landscape shifted significantly in 2018 when the Supreme Court struck down Section 377, a colonial-era law that had criminalized homosexual activity since 1861. The ruling was a landmark moment and was met with celebrations in cities across the country. Same-sex marriage is not yet legally recognized, and a Supreme Court ruling in 2023 declined to extend marriage rights, leaving that decision to parliament. Legal protections against discrimination remain limited compared to more progressive destinations.
In practice, the experience of LGBTQ+ travel in India varies enormously depending on where you are. Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore have established gay scenes, host Pride celebrations that draw significant crowds, and operate with a degree of openness that would have been difficult to imagine a decade ago.
The luxury travel circuit, the palace hotels of Rajasthan, the heritage properties of Kerala, the five-star hotels of the major cities, is generally welcoming and discreet in equal measure.
Public displays of affection are inadvisable outside the most cosmopolitan urban environments, and attitudes in rural areas remain conservative. India rewards LGBTQ+ travellers who go in with clear expectations and an itinerary built by specialists who understand the nuances on the ground.
India is one of the most rewarding destinations in the world to plan well and one of the most overwhelming to plan badly. The country’s scale and complexity mean that the itinerary architecture matters more than almost anywhere else: which regions to combine, how much time to allow in each, how to sequence the experiences so that the trip builds rather than exhausts.
The Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur is the most travelled circuit in India for good reason, but it works best when it is extended intelligently, into Rajasthan’s smaller palace towns, into the tiger reserves of Ranthambore, or south into Mumbai. Kerala and Goa work well together as a southern itinerary. The Himalayan north is a different brief entirely.
Out Of Office builds each trip around a clear geographic logic rather than trying to cover the country in a single visit.
Every transfer, driver and internal flight is arranged as part of the build. In a country where airport logistics, city traffic and inter-city distances can absorb significant time, having every movement handled in advance makes the difference between an itinerary that flows and one that frays.
Our specialists also know which luxury properties deliver on their promises in India, which is not always the one with the most impressive photographs.
Delhi, Agra and Jaipur form the most travelled circuit in India and remain essential. Delhi layers three thousand years of history into a single overwhelming city, from the Mughal grandeur of the Red Fort and Humayun’s Tomb to the colonial geometry of Lutyens’ New Delhi and the chaotic energy of Old Delhi’s bazaars. Agra’s Taj Mahal needs no introduction, but seeing it at sunrise before the crowds arrive, with a private guide who can provide the full context of Shah Jahan’s obsession, is a different experience from the standard visit. Jaipur’s Pink City, with its palace hotels, textile markets and Amber Fort, completes a circuit that covers more cultural ground than most countries manage in their entirety.
Kerala operates at a pace that is unlike anywhere else in India. The backwaters, a network of lakes, rivers and canals running parallel to the Arabian Sea coast, are best explored on a private houseboat with a crew and a kitchen. The tea and spice plantations of the Western Ghats sit above the coast and reward a night or two at altitude. Kochi’s Fort area has a well-established arts and food scene, and the classical Kathakali dance performances, seen properly in an intimate venue rather than a tourist show, are worth building into the itinerary.
The desert state rewards travellers who go further than the Golden Triangle. Udaipur, built around a lake with palace hotels that rank among the most romantic in the world, is the obvious extension. Jodhpur’s blue city and its clifftop Mehrangarh Fort, the sand dunes of Jaisalmer and the rural heritage properties scattered across the Aravalli hills give Rajasthan enough depth for a dedicated week-long itinerary. The palace hotel market here, Amanbagh, SUJÁN Jawai, Raas Jodhpur, is among the strongest in Asia.
India’s palace hotel market is one of the most extraordinary in the world. The country’s maharaja heritage has left behind a collection of forts, palaces and hunting lodges that have been converted into some of the most distinctive luxury properties anywhere, and the best of them, Amanbagh in Rajasthan, the Taj Lake Palace floating on Udaipur’s Pichola Lake, the Oberoi Udaivilas, SUJÁN Jawai in the leopard territory of the Aravalli hills, are genuinely unlike anything available in other destinations. Staying in a 16th century Rajput fort with a private pool, a dedicated butler and a kitchen drawing on regional ingredients is not a hotel experience that translates easily elsewhere.
The Oberoi and Taj groups anchor the luxury end of the Indian hotel market across the major cities, with properties in Delhi, Mumbai, Agra and Jaipur that consistently deliver at the five-star level. Aman’s two Indian properties, Amanbagh and Amanyora in Bhutan, sit at the quieter, more private end of the spectrum. Soho House Mumbai has brought a different register to the city’s luxury scene, and the W Goa and a growing number of design-led beach properties have raised the standard along the Goan coastline significantly.
Beyond accommodation, India’s luxury experiences scale with the itinerary. Private sunrise visits to the Taj Mahal before the site opens to the public. Tiger tracking in Ranthambore or Bandhavgarh with a specialist naturalist. Ayurvedic retreats in Kerala that operate on a week-long programme rather than a single treatment. Cooking classes in the kitchen of a Rajasthani haveli. A private boat on the Ganges at Varanasi at dawn. These are experiences that require the right contacts and enough lead time, and they are what separates a serious India itinerary from a standard one.
