Buenos Aires is where most journeys begin, and it earns the attention. The city’s Belle Époque architecture tells the story of a nation that was once among the world’s wealthiest, and that grandeur survives in its grand cafés, its opera house, and its hotels.
Recoleta and Palermo are the neighborhoods that define the luxury experience: elegant, restaurant-dense, and walkable, with some of South America’s best open-fire cooking just steps from the city’s finest properties. Tango, born here from the mingling of European immigrant cultures, is best experienced at a traditional milonga rather than a tourist show.
Mendoza sits at the foot of the Andes and produces Malbec that has earned Argentina a place on every serious wine list. The best way to see it is slowly, cycling between family-owned bodegas, staying at a vineyard lodge, and eating long lunches under the vines with the snow-capped peaks visible on the horizon.
Patagonia offers something entirely different: a vast, largely untouched wilderness where boutique lodges serve as base camps for trekking the granite spires of Fitz Roy, watching the Perito Moreno Glacier calve into the lake, and spotting whales and penguins on the Peninsula Valdés coastline.
Argentina pairs naturally with neighboring Uruguay and Brazil, and most itineraries can be extended without backtracking.

Contact usArgentina is one of South America’s largest and most geographically varied countries, stretching almost 3,500 miles from the subtropical forests of the northeast to the wind-scoured tip of Patagonia in the south.
The Andes form its western spine, separating Argentina from Chile along one of the world’s most dramatic natural borders, while the vast Pampas grasslands to the east have shaped the country’s culture and economy for centuries.
The country’s history is written in its architecture and its people. Waves of Spanish, Italian, and other European immigration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries transformed Buenos Aires into one of the hemisphere’s great cities, funding the Belle Époque boulevards and grand civic buildings that still define the capital today. That cosmopolitan heritage lives on in the food, the music, and the distinct identity Argentines carry with considerable pride.
Beyond Buenos Aires, the country divides into distinct regions, each with its own character. Mendoza in the west is Argentina’s wine heartland, producing Malbec at altitude beneath the Andes. Patagonia in the south is one of the world’s last great wilderness areas, home to glaciers, granite peaks, and a coastline rich with marine wildlife.
The northwest, centered on Salta and Jujuy, offers high-altitude landscapes of salt flats and colored mountain valleys shaped by indigenous Andean cultures.
In the northeast, Iguazu Falls sits on the border with Brazil, with 275 individual cascades making it one of the most spectacular natural sights on earth.
Argentina was the first country in South America to legalize same-sex marriage, doing so in 2010, and has since built one of the most comprehensive legal frameworks for LGBTQ+ rights anywhere in the world. Anti-discrimination protections cover sexual orientation and gender identity, and the country’s gender recognition law is among the most progressive globally, allowing individuals to change their legal gender without medical requirements.
In practice, Buenos Aires is one of the great LGBTQ+ cities of the Americas. The neighborhoods of Palermo and San Telmo are home to a well-established gay scene with bars, clubs, restaurants and cultural spaces, and the city’s annual Pride parade draws hundreds of thousands of people each year.
Beyond the capital, cities including Córdoba and Rosario have their own visible LGBTQ+ communities, and gay-friendly accommodation is available across the country’s main travel regions, including Mendoza and Patagonia.
For LGBTQ+ travellers, Argentina combines genuine legal protections with a culture of openness that makes it one of the most welcoming destinations in South America.
Buenos Aires is the natural starting point for any Argentina itinerary, and one of the great cities of the Americas.
Its Belle Époque boulevards, grand opera house, and Recoleta mansions reflect the extraordinary wealth of the early 20th century, when Argentina rivaled the richest nations on earth.
That history gives the city a faded grandeur that sets it apart from other South American capitals.
Today it is a genuinely cosmopolitan city with a strong cultural identity. The neighborhoods of Palermo and San Telmo are where most visitors spend their time: lined with restaurants, galleries, and bars, and home to some of the continent’s most inventive cooking alongside the traditional open-fire asado that remains the centerpiece of Argentine dining.
Tango, which was born in the working-class tenements of Buenos Aires in the late 19th century, is still very much alive in the city’s milongas, where locals dance seriously and visitors are welcome to watch or join in.
Patagonia is one of the world’s last great wilderness areas, covering a vast stretch of southern Argentina from the Lake District in the north to the Strait of Magellan in the south.
The landscapes here operate on a different scale entirely: ancient glaciers, granite spires, turquoise lakes, and endless open steppe under skies that change by the hour.
The centerpiece for most visitors is Parque Nacional Los Glaciares, home to the Perito Moreno Glacier, one of the few glaciers in the world that is still advancing. Watching house-sized chunks of ice calve into Lago Argentino is one of those experiences that is genuinely difficult to overstate.
Further north, the jagged peaks of the Fitz Roy massif around El Chaltén draw serious trekkers, while the Peninsula Valdés coastline offers exceptional wildlife watching: southern right whales, elephant seals, Magellanic penguins, and orcas all congregate here at different points in the year.
Most visitors to Argentina follow the same well-worn circuit of Buenos Aires, Mendoza, and Patagonia. The northwest rewards those who venture further.
The provinces of Salta and Jujuy offer some of the most visually dramatic landscapes in South America: the Quebrada de Humahuaca, a UNESCO-listed mountain valley whose rock faces shift through 14 distinct colors depending on the light, the vast white expanse of the Salinas Grandes salt flats, and colonial towns where Andean and Spanish cultures have been intertwined for centuries.
Further off the radar, the thermal baths at Villavicencio sit in the Andean foothills outside Mendoza, fed by mineral-rich waters that have drawn visitors for their restorative properties since the 19th century.
The surrounding landscape of high-altitude desert and mountain passes makes the journey as worthwhile as the destination itself.
The Iberá Wetlands in the northeast are Argentina’s answer to the Pantanal: a vast system of lagoons and marshland that is home to giant otters, caimans, capybaras, and over 350 species of bird.
Rewilding efforts have reintroduced jaguars to the region, making it one of the few places in South America where the big cat can now be spotted in the wild.
Buenos Aires is well connected from the United States, with several airlines operating direct flights to Ministro Pistarini International Airport (EZE). American Airlines flies nonstop from Miami, Delta operates year-round from Atlanta, and United Airlines also serves the route.
Miami is the most convenient gateway, with a flight time of around 11 hours. From New York JFK the journey is closer to 15 hours, and connections are available from most major US cities via Miami or Atlanta. LATAM and Aerolíneas Argentinas offer additional options on the route.
There are currently no nonstop flights from the UK to Buenos Aires. The most popular routing from London Heathrow is with British Airways via São Paulo or Madrid, with total journey times of around 16 to 17 hours.
Iberia via Madrid is a strong alternative, with competitive business class fares and good onward connections within Argentina. KLM via Amsterdam and Lufthansa via Frankfurt are also well-travelled options. Most itineraries involve a single stop of one to two hours, making the connection relatively smooth.
