In detail

? Don't forget that most of our itineraries can be totally customized. Our expert team will be able to talk you through all the options.

Day 1-2: Tokyo

As a hub for technology, fashion, and food, Tokyo dazzles with its vibrant energy and cultural depth. It’s a city where ancient temples stand in the shadow of soaring skyscrapers and the streets come alive with the glow of neon.

Your exploration begins in the heart of the Shinjuku district, where the city’s pulse is most palpable. We recommend arriving early to settle in and acclimatise to the buzz of the metropolis. Should you need an extra night’s accommodation, Out of Office is ready to assist.

On the first evening, as twilight descends on Tokyo, you’ll meet your fellow travellers and trip leader. After a brief orientation, you’ll dive into Japanese culture at a local Izakaya for a welcome dinner. The next day promises an adventure led by a local guide, taking you from the serenity of Meiji Shrine and Yoyogi Park to the trendy streets of Harajuku and Shibuya’s iconic scramble crossing.

Day 1-2: Tokyo

Day 3-4: Nagano

Venture into the heart of Japan’s central landscape, where the Nagano region awaits with its postcard-worthy mountain scenes, rich historical tapestry, and the warmth of natural hot springs. This picturesque area, famed for hosting the 1998 Winter Olympics, offers an array of attractions – from the slopes of popular ski resorts to the grandeur of Matsumoto Castle.

Your travel from Tokyo will be aboard Japan’s sleek, modern trains, leading you to the charming town of Yudanaka nestled within the majestic central Alps. Here, in the authenticity of a ryokan, you’ll be immersed in the essence of Japanese hospitality. Donning slippers and robes, you’ll experience communal connection in the soothing onsen, a quintessential Japanese tradition.

Beyond the tranquil reprieve of your ryokan stay, a stroll through Jigokudani’s dramatic landscapes unveils the enchanting sight of snow monkeys basking in the steamy embrace of hot springs – an absolutely heartwarming sight.

Day 3-4: Nagano

Day 5-7: Kyoto

On the fifth day, your journey will glide from the highlands of Japan’s central Alps through verdant valleys and tranquil farming villages, leading you to the historical heart of Japan—Kyoto. Here, you’ll find ancient temples, traditional tea houses, and tranquil gardens.

For three nights in Kyoto, you’ll be steeped in its imperial history, exploring venerable shrines like Fushimi Inari and the golden pavilion of Kinkaku-ji. Kyoto’s profound cultural heritage offers picturesque scenes at every turn.

Your exploration of Kyoto will begin with an easy-paced half-day bicycle tour, led by a local guide, revealing the city’s secrets and storied past. For a taste of tradition, a visit to a local sake brewery will unfold the intricate craft behind Japan’s beloved rice wine. Whether a connoisseur or a curious traveller, you’ll delight in discovering your preferred sake, deepening your connection to Japan’s cherished customs.

Day 5-7: Kyoto

Day 8-10: Osaka

You’ll go from the historical splendour of Kyoto to Osaka in under an hour. As Japan’s dynamic second city, Osaka offers a contrasting vibe to Tokyo. Celebrated as the “Venice of the East” for its intricate waterways and “the nation’s kitchen” for its unrivalled food scene, Osaka is a city that teems with life and flavour.

Here, you’ll delve into Osaka’s vibrant heart with a local guide, uncovering hidden gems and the city’s culinary prowess. The afternoon is yours to choose your own adventure – whether it’s meeting Nara’s courteous bowing deer, engaging in a hands-on cooking class, or exploring the myriad of other experiences Osaka has to offer.

Your Japanese journey ends here. You’re free to depart at your leisure, whether returning home, continuing to South Korea, or venturing to another destination. Remember, Out of Office is here to ensure your travel plans are as smooth and enjoyable as the journey itself.

Day 8-10: Osaka

Optional Extension: Self-Guided South Korea

If your wanderlust yearns for more after exploring Japan, consider adding a three-night South Korean odyssey to your itinerary. South Korea presents a captivating blend of ancient customs and forward-thinking innovation, a world where the vibrant energy of K-Pop and the tantalising flavours of kimchi and bulgogi are just the beginning. The country’s stunning natural vistas are matched by its deep-rooted sense of community and warm hospitality.

This self-directed extension fits in perfectly with your Japanese escapade, offering a seamless transition to the unique splendours of another East Asian gem. In Seoul, find yourself amidst the city’s pulsating heart in exquisite accommodations. Dive into the local culture with a Korean BBQ feast, a comprehensive city tour, and a poignant visit to the DMZ.
