Japan does romance in a register most destinations can’t match. It is meticulous, visually extraordinary, and has a hospitality culture, omotenashi, that treats every guest as if the stay was designed specifically for them. For couples, that combination is close to unbeatable.

Some of our Japanese honeymoon highlights include a private cypress bath drawn for you at a specific hour. An eight-course kaiseki dinner that arrives in your tatami room as the sun drops. A dawn walk through Fushimi Inari’s torii gates before anyone else has arrived. These are not manufactured romantic moments — they are what Japan does as standard.

Our specialists have planned Japan honeymoons for LGBTQ+ couples across all of these itinerary types. We know which ryokans approach same-sex couples with the same warmth they extend to everyone. We handle the reservations, the transfers, the contingencies, and the moments when Google Translate is not going to be enough.

In detail

? Don't forget that most of our itineraries can be totally customized. Our expert team will be able to talk you through all the options.

Days 1-3: Tokyo

You arrive into Haneda and transfer directly to your hotel. For a honeymoon, we recommend Aman Tokyo: 84 rooms across six floors of a Marunouchi skyscraper, with interiors that interpret traditional Japanese spatial principles at a scale that takes some adjustment. The spa here is among the best urban wellness facilities in Asia.

Tokyo on a honeymoon is best approached as two or three neighborhoods rather than a checklist. Yanaka, the old merchant quarter that survived the 1923 earthquake, rewards an afternoon of slow walking.

The bars of Golden Gai in Shinjuku, each one holding perhaps eight people, are worth an evening. The Tsukiji outer market, still running after the central fish market relocated to Toyosu, is best experienced at breakfast with nowhere to be afterward.

For dinner, our specialists will secure reservations at the kaiseki or omakase restaurant that fits what you actually want to eat. Japan’s restaurant reservation system is one of the most complex in the world; this is not a detail to leave to chance.

Days 1-3: Tokyo

Days 4-5: Kinosaki Onsen

The Kounotori Tajima Express from Osaka takes around two and a half hours to reach Kinosaki, a small onsen town on the Sea of Japan coast that looks almost exactly as it did a century ago. Willow trees lean over the central canal, seven public bathhouses operate on a circuit, and guests move between them in yukata robes and wooden geta sandals. It is, objectively, one of the most atmospheric places in Japan, and almost entirely absent from standard luxury itineraries.

We recommend Nishimuraya Honkan, the finest of Kinosaki’s traditional ryokans, with tatami rooms, in-room cypress baths, and the particular quiet that comes from a place built before anyone considered what it might sound like at scale.

Days 4-5: Kinosaki Onsen

Days 6-8: Kyoto

The bullet train south deposits you in Kyoto in under two hours. For a honeymoon, we use either Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto, built on the historic Mitsui family estate with a private onsen bath, or Six Senses Kyoto, which combines the brand’s wellness credentials with a location among the temples of Higashiyama.

Three nights in Kyoto is enough to move through it properly without rushing. Fushimi Inari at dawn, before the crowds, is a different experience from the same shrine at noon. Arashiyama’s bamboo grove, with a private guide who can take you through to the less visited paths beyond, is worth the organization. A private tea ceremony in a house that isn’t selling ceramics in the next room is available to arrange.

On your final evening, we recommend a kaiseki dinner at one of Kyoto’s long-established restaurants. This is cooking that treats the season as its primary ingredient, and in Kyoto that tradition has more depth than anywhere else in Japan.

Days 6-8: Kyoto

Why book with Out Of Office

Every element of this itinerary is tailor-made. The hotels above are our recommendations based on years of planning Japan honeymoons for LGBTQ+ couples, but if you have a property in mind, or want to extend into Hiroshima, Hakone, or Kanazawa, we build from your brief rather than a fixed template.

Practically speaking: Japan’s restaurant reservation system requires a Japanese-speaking intermediary for the best tables. Ryokan check-in windows don’t flex. The Shinkansen network is extraordinarily efficient but unforgiving of mistakes.

Our specialists handle all of it, reservations, transfers, day-by-day logistics, and are available throughout your trip if anything needs adjusting on the ground.

Prices vary significantly by travel dates, particularly around cherry blossom season in late March and early April. Speak to our team early if you have specific dates in mind.
