Gay Group Trip: 8 Days in Ecuador & the Galapagos

At a glance

? Our group trips are a great chance to travel with others. We also recommend adding in a few extra nights tailor-made to ensure you build the perfect itinerary.

Enjoy eight days in Ecuador’s highlands and the Galápagos archipelago, designed for LGBTQ+ travellers who want the real thing. Start in Quito at 9,350 feet where the colonial centre sprawls beneath Cotopaxi volcano.

You’ll stand at the Equator, explore centuries-old Spanish architecture, then fly out to a private yacht that carries just 16 passengers through some of the world’s most remote islands.

This isn’t a floating resort or a crowded tour boat. Your naturalist guide chooses landing sites based on wildlife behavior and crowd patterns, not convenience.

You’ll snorkel with Galápagos penguins on Fernandina, hike volcanic rims on Isabela past sun-bathing marine iguanas, and watch albatrosses on Española that rarely see humans. The channels around these islands concentrate hammerhead sharks, giant manta rays, and sea lions that don’t flee at first sight.

More Information

Ecuador is considered progressive in South America regarding LGBTQ+ rights, making significant strides in recent years. Same-sex sexual activity has been legal since 1997, and in 2019, the country legalized same-sex marriage following a ruling by the Constitutional Court. This decision made Ecuador one of the few countries in the region to offer full marriage equality, allowing same-sex couples the same legal rights as heterosexual couples.

The country also provides anti-discrimination protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity, enshrined in its 2008 constitution. These protections extend to employment, education, and public services, reflecting a legal framework that supports equality. Additionally, transgender individuals in Ecuador can change their gender markers on official documents without requiring surgery.

Despite these legal advancements, societal attitudes towards LGBTQ+ individuals vary widely. In urban areas like Quito, Guayaquil, and Cuenca, there is greater visibility and acceptance, with LGBTQ+ advocacy groups, inclusive nightlife, and Pride events fostering a sense of community. However, in more rural and conservative areas, traditional values can lead to stigma and challenges for LGBTQ+ individuals.

Activism remains a key driver of progress in Ecuador, with organizations working to promote awareness, challenge discrimination, and push for broader acceptance. While challenges persist, Ecuador’s legal achievements and growing visibility of the LGBTQ+ community highlight the country’s progress toward a more inclusive society. For LGBTQ+ travellers, Ecuador offers a mix of natural beauty, vibrant culture, and welcoming spaces, particularly in its more urban regions.
