Ecuador’s Luxury Amazon Cruise: Napo River, Yasuní & the Andes

The day starts at Mitad del Mundo, the monument marking the equator, where a single step carries you between hemispheres and a series of small science exhibits explain exactly why the line falls where it does.

Lunch follows nearby, before an English-speaking guide leads you on foot into the historic centre itself, generally considered Latin America’s best-preserved colonial old town.

The afternoon moves through Plaza Grande, the city’s central square, past the Compañía de Jesús church, its interior covered almost entirely in gold leaf, and along streets where balconies, courtyards, and church facades layer four centuries of building on top of one another without ever quite settling into one single style.

A short flight, no more than half an hour, carries you from the mountain air of Quito down into the jungle town of Coca, and the change in climate is immediate, cooler clouds giving way to thick, warm humidity within minutes of landing.

A motorized canoe carries you roughly an hour downstream along the Napo River, the largest tributary of the Amazon, before the cruise comes into view, a hundred and forty-eight feet of Ecuadorian rainforest luxury with a rooftop deck, a plunge pool, and floor-to-ceiling windows in every suite.

The ship continues its own downstream journey through the afternoon. Once the light fades, an evening walk on land offers a first look at the forest’s nocturnal activity, the calls and movement of a jungle that only fully wakes after dark.

A morning ashore puts you directly into the rainforest’s ecology, with a naturalist guide pointing out the relationships between plants and animals that keep the forest running, the fungi, the vines, the insects doing work that is easy to miss without someone trained to notice it.

After lunch back on board, the cruise navigates toward one of the most pristine and least explored stretches of the Ecuadorian Amazon, a flooded ecosystem reachable only by canoe and home to pink river dolphins, black caiman, river turtles, and the Hoatzin, a striking, prehistoric-looking bird.

The canoe itself becomes the point of the afternoon, moving quietly enough to bring you within a few feet of wildlife that would scatter at the sound of an engine.

The morning is spent at a small school on the riverbank, where children from the local community welcome visitors and a teacher explains what education looks like in one of the most remote parts of the Ecuadorian Amazon, a glimpse of daily life well outside the itinerary’s wilder moments.

Back on board for lunch, the afternoon slows into an upstream cruise, with a lecture or documentary screening on offer and, time permitting, a hands-on lesson in the handicrafts made throughout the region, woven fiber, carved wood, and dyed textiles among them.

Late in the day, the ship pulls in at one of the Napo’s largest river islands, a sandy stretch of shoreline good for stretching your legs before the evening’s return to the water.

A hundred-foot observation tower built against a kapok tree offers a rare vantage point over the canopy and the wider Amazon Basin. The afternoon continues into the Limoncocha Biological Reserve, home to more than 478 recorded bird species, with an evening spent spotting black caiman by flashlight before returning to the ship for dinner.

The next day, a motorized canoe carries you back to Coca for the flight to Quito, either for your onward journey or straight into the optional Andes extension.

The extension continues to Sacha Jí, an Andean wellness retreat built by its owner, an architect and photographer whose fingerprints show throughout the property, from the curved, feng shui-influenced buildings to the original photography on nearly every wall.

Eleven rooms are tucked into the hillside in small clusters, most with a wood-burning stove and all with private bathrooms, and the green roofs above them double as terraces, complete with hammocks, looking out toward Imbabura Volcano and Lake San Pablo.

From Sacha Jí, a day trip covers Otavalo’s market, the largest indigenous market anywhere in Latin America, where textiles and handicrafts fill the Plaza de Ponchos and spill into the streets around it, with separate produce and livestock markets on the town’s edges.

After lunch, Peguche’s weaving families demonstrate techniques passed down over generations, and a nearby workshop of Andean instrument makers offers a short live performance.

The day winds down at Cuicocha, a crater lake formed by an old volcano, with a stop in Cotacachi, known for its leather goods, if time allows.
