Italy is one of the most romantic destinations in the world. Shakespeare set Rome and Juliet in Verona for a reason. He probably never visited Italy but it existed in his imagination as a place of romance.

With this itinerary, you can explore the Romeo and Juliet trail of Verona and Mantua. You can also explore Venice, Florence and Lake Garda. What’s more, you can do all of this within the space of a week!

Italy’s compact geography and excellent transportation infrastructure make exploring multiple destinations refreshingly easy. Venice to Verona requires only 90 minutes by train, whilst Florence connects to both cities in under two hours, allowing couples to experience dramatically different Italian landscapes and cultures within the same day.

Verona, the eternal “city of love,” serves as the beating heart of this journey, where you can stand beneath the famous balcony at Casa di Giulietta, touch the bronze statue of Juliet for good luck in love, and explore the medieval streets where the feuding Montagues and Capulets would have lived. The city’s ancient Roman amphitheater still echoes with performances of the star-crossed lovers’ tale, while Juliet’s supposed tomb at San Francesco al Corso provides a poignant pilgrimage site for romantics worldwide. Just an hour away, Mantua completes the story as the place of Romeo’s exile – the city where he received the fateful news that would seal the lovers’ tragic fate. Walking through Mantua’s Renaissance palaces and quiet piazzas, you can imagine Romeo’s desperation and longing as he waited for word from his beloved Juliet.

Lake Garda sits perfectly positioned between Verona and Milan, reachable in just 45 minutes, whilst Mantua’s proximity to Verona means you can explore both Romeo and Juliet locations without lengthy journeys disrupting your adventure.

Days 1-2: Verona Base

Settle into your Verona accommodation and explore the city’s romantic landmarks – Juliet’s balcony, the ancient Roman Arena, and the charming Piazza delle Erbe. Take a sunset aperitivo overlooking the Adige River and discover why this UNESCO World Heritage city inspired Shakespeare to write the definitive romantic play.

Verona will be your base from which to explore so many of Italy’s most sought-after destinations, all within easy reach.

Days 1-2: Verona Base

Day 3: Mantua Day Trip

Take a 45-minute train journey to Mantua, the other half of the Romeo and Juliet trail. Explore the Ducal Palace where the Gonzaga family ruled, wander through the Renaissance streets, and enjoy lunch in the atmospheric Piazza delle Erbe before returning to Verona in the evening. Mantua is small so you won’t need long to explore.

If you travel during the summer, your trip might overlap with the Mantua Summer Festival, where A-list performers take to the stage at Piazza Sordello, a UNESCO heritage site.

Day 3: Mantua Day Trip

Days 4-5: Lake Garda

Transfer to Lake Garda (45 minutes) and base yourself in elegant Sirmione or Bardolino. Spend your days taking boat trips across Italy’s largest lake, exploring charming lakeside towns like Bellagio-style Malcesine, and enjoying romantic dinners with mountain and water views.

You can spend a night in a hotel on Lake Garda. Alternatively, you can return to Verona for the night, and that’s the beauty of this itinerary: everything is easily accessible.

Days 4-5: Lake Garda

Day 6: Florence Day Trip

Option 1: Art Lover’s Intensive

Join a skip-the-line tickets for both the Accademia (David) and Uffizi galleries. Start early at the Accademia (30 minutes for David), then walk to the Uffizi for Botticelli’s Birth of Venus and countless Renaissance masterpieces. This leaves little time for city wandering but rewards serious art enthusiasts with world-class collections. Grab a quick lunch between galleries and save the Ponte Vecchio stroll for late afternoon.

Option 2: City Highlights with David

Focus on the Accademia for David, then spend your time exploring Florence’s romantic streets. Stroll across the Ponte Vecchio, climb to Piazzale Michelangelo for sunset views over the red-tiled rooftops, and enjoy a proper Tuscan lunch in a local trattoria. This approach captures Florence’s essence without gallery fatigue.

The Verdict

Unless you’re passionate art lovers, choose Option 2. A day trip should feel inspiring rather than exhausting, and Florence’s street-level magic often proves more memorable than rushing between museums. Save the Uffizi for a future dedicated Florence visit when you can truly appreciate its treasures without time pressure.

Day 6: Florence Day Trip

Days 7-8: Venice Grand Finale

Take the scenic 90-minute train to Venice and settle into your canal-side hotel. Spend your first evening floating through canals in a private gondola and dining at an osteria. Your final day includes exploring St. Mark’s Square at sunrise, shopping for Murano glass, and toasting your romantic week with Bellinis at Harry’s Bar before departing from Marco Polo Airport.

Days 7-8: Venice Grand Finale
