Move Over Mykonos: Discover Greece’s Rising LGBTQ+ Destinations

For decades, Mykonos has claimed its throne as Greece’s unquestioned gay capital. The island’s nightclubs throb until sunrise, its beaches fill with beautiful people, and its streets buzz with the kind of cosmopolitan energy that occurs when the upwardly mobile congregate.

In recent years, Mykonos in summer has become something of a caricature of itself: overbooked, overpriced, and overshadowed.

Greece itself has undergone a seismic cultural shift. In February 2024, it became the first Orthodox-majority country to legalize same-sex marriage and grant gay couples the right to adopt.

That same year, Thessaloniki hosted EuroPride, Europe’s largest annual LGBTQ+ event, a nine-day celebration that coincided with Greece’s legislative transformation. The theme, “Perseverance, Progress, Prosperity,” reverberated through the city as locals and travellers from across the continent joined the party.

In this article, we’ll introduce you to Greece’s up-and-coming LGBTQ+ destinations.

Athens

Athens

Athens often gets dismissed by gay travellers as a mere gateway to island hopping, a place to catch the Acropolis before moving on to the more glamorous bits. This is a misjudgment. The Greek capital has a thriving, if low-key, LGBTQ+ scene that rewards those willing to venture beyond the typical tourist circuits.

The neighbourhood of Gazi, anchored by the old Technopolis gasworks, has become Athens’s gay centre. It’s not festooned with rainbow flags. Instead, what you’ll find are stylish bars, dinner clubs featuring drag performances, and restaurants where locals (both straight and gay) converge for excellent food and conversation.

Sodade 2, one of the city’s pioneering gay bars, remains a reliable draw. Koukles Club stages cabaret performances with often outrageous drag queens.

Acropolis Athens

Athens Pride, held in June, has grown from a modest gathering into a celebration drawing thousands. The parade now commands serious city resources and political attention. A decade ago, major politicians still avoided the event. Today, the mayor attends. The shift is subtle but significant. It signals that LGBTQ+ visibility in the capital is no longer a fringe concern.

Beyond Gazi, the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST) appeals to art lovers. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre, designed by Renzo Piano, is an architectural marvel housing the National Library and Greek National Opera. Both institutions have demonstrated clear commitment to LGBTQ+ programming and representation. Ancient sites remain non-negotiable: the Acropolis, Hadrian’s Library, and the Temple of Olympian Zeus provide historical grounding that reminds you this city invented democracy itself.

For accommodation, A for Athens sits a twenty-minute walk from Gazi and offers rooftop views of the Acropolis. But the real luxury choice lies south.

The Athens Riviera

South of the city lies the Athens Riviera, a stretch of coastal towns that has undergone quiet gentrification over the past decade. Glyfada, Voula, and Vouliagmeni offer the beach experience that makes summer in Greece worth the flight.

Glyfada remains the most fashionable of these towns. Its pedestrian streets bustle with high-end boutiques, while beach clubs like Balux House Project draw a mixed crowd of stylish people seeking rosé and sea views. The beach clubs are designed for lingering: cushioned loungers, attentive service, and fresh seafood.

Vouliagmeni, farther south, has a different character. It hosts Lake Vouliagmeni, a thermal spring surrounded by steep cliffs that creates an otherworldly atmosphere. The water temperature remains constant year-round, and the healing properties attributed to it have attracted visitors for centuries. The beach at Astir, just adjacent, is where the Four Seasons sits, offering five-star amenities.

For travellers specifically seeking gay beach experience, Limanakia B lies between Vouliagmeni and Varkiza. This rocky (not sandy) beach has become the primary gathering place for Athens’s gay community. It’s clothing-optional, scattered with secluded caves, and filled with an entirely unpretentious crowd.

Getting there requires forty minutes by taxi or an hour using public transportation, but the journey is worth it: expect Greek men of all ages and body types enjoying sea and sun.

The Margi stands as the finest luxury accommodation on the Athens Riviera. Located in the posh seaside community of Vouliagmeni (thirty minutes south of the city centre), this boutique property always a good choice. Its bougainvillea-draped pool, organic spa, farm-to-table restaurants, and unobstructed sea views make it easy to forget that Athens lies just beyond the horizon.

Paros

Located just 25 kilometers from Mykonos, the island has become refuge for those seeking the Greek island experience without the Mykonos crowds.

Parikia serves as the functional hub and transport centre for the Cyclades, with its ferry connections and working port. But Naoussa, a fishing village of fewer than three thousand permanent residents, contains the actual charm. Its maze of whitewashed alleys, bougainvillea-draped buildings, and small harbor create the postcard version of the Greek islands. Unlike Mykonos Town, which has been effectively overtaken by high-end tourism, Naoussa retains genuine village character. Tavernas line the waterfront, and the sunken fort visible from the harbor provides a focal point for evening wandering.

Paros is home to one gay venue, Persona in Naousa town. Bathed in pink light, it’s a good place to spend your evenings and mingle with fellow travellers.

The island’s beaches define the experience. Lageri Beach, ten minutes’ walk from Naoussa, has become the primary gay gathering spot. The waters are turquoise and extraordinarily clear. Kalami Beach, also in the Naoussa bay, offers similar appeal. Both are clothing-optional and attract a mixed crowd.

Andronis Minois is one of the standout luxury hotels in paros. You’re 200 meters from Parasporos beach, which is always a bonus. The Olvo Restaurant serves proper Mediterranean cooking, there’s an Aura Spa for the inevitable restoration requirement, and the Lounge Deck is a great place to sit. Andronis Minois is part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World property and part of the Andronis collection that dominates luxury hospitality across both Santorini and Paros.

The appeal of Paros extends beyond beaches and bars. The island has a rich winemaking tradition spanning five thousand years. Restaurants throughout Naoussa serve Greek cuisine at prices that reflect local economics more so than tourist economics.

Naxos

Naxos stands as the largest island in the Cyclades and has deliberately chosen a path different from its more famous neighbors. The marble quarries and local produce remain as important to the island’s economy as tourism.

Naxos Town, the main settlement, sits on a hillside overlooking the sea, with a medieval Venetian castle anchoring the old town. The labyrinthine streets feature traditional architecture without the over-restoration that characterizes Mykonos or Santorini. Museums dedicated to local archaeology and geology add context.

The beaches offer the primary appeal for summer visitors. Agia Anna and Plaka Beach have become preferred by LGBTQ+ travellers, with clothing-optional sections. Agios Prokopios, five kilometers from town, has golden sand and clear waters without the development that characterizes busier islands.

What separates Naxos from becoming the next Mykonos is the island’s underlying character. It remains genuinely agricultural. You’ll encounter wineries, olive presses, and production facilities that serve local needs rather than tourist ones. There’s authentic community here, visible in the family businesses that persist alongside newer tourism infrastructure.

Mykonos

The Moment We’re In

In 2024, Thessaloniki’s hosting of EuroPride marked a historical turning point for Greece. Greece’s legalization of same-sex marriage and adoption rights, combined with EuroPride’s conference programme addressing human rights and European policy, positioned the country as engaged in substantive LGBTQ+ progress.

Mykonos will always have its appeal if you prefer an explicit gay scene and don’t mind paying premium prices for the privilege. But for luxury travellers seeking authentic Greece, Athens, the Athens Riviera, Paros, and Naxos offer something different: the perfect Greek experience without the crowds. You won’t have to queue before a sea of selfie sticks to see the sunset.

Whether you are drawn to the cultural vibrancy of Athens, the coastal glamor of the Riviera, or the islands of Paros and Naxos, our travel specialists can craft the perfect itinerary for you.
