Dubrovnik, Mostar & Kotor: A Balkans Coastal Discovery

At a glance

? Don't forget that all of our itineraries are totally customized and so this is just an idea of what we can build for you.

Three countries, three very different histories, and barely three hours of driving between any of them.

This itinerary treats Dubrovnik as a base rather than a single stop, using it to reach two neighboring countries most travellers never quite make time for.

A day trip crosses into Bosnia and Herzegovina to reach Mostar, a city defined by its 16th-century Ottoman bridge and a history of destruction and rebuilding still visible at every turn.

From there, the route continues south into Montenegro, to the Bay of Kotor, a fjord-like inlet ringed by mountains, with a walled medieval town at its heart that rivals Dubrovnik’s own for atmosphere, at a fraction of the crowds.

Your base throughout is Villa Dubrovnik, set into the cliffs just outside the Old Town walls, making it easy to return each evening to genuine quiet after a day spent crossing borders.

Both Bosnia and Montenegro remain considerably less visited than Croatia itself, and this itinerary is a natural extension for LGBTQ+ travellers who have already experienced Dubrovnik and want to see what sits just beyond it, or as an add-on to our Highlights of Croatia or Game of Thrones itineraries for anyone extending their stay.

Day 1: Arrival in Dubrovnik

Arrive into Dubrovnik and check into Villa Dubrovnik, built into the cliffside just outside the Old Town walls.

Spend the afternoon settling in, with the hotel’s own private beach and Villa Spa on hand for anyone easing into the trip rather than rushing straight into it.

An evening walk into the Old Town, a fifteen-minute stroll away, is a gentle introduction to the city before tomorrow’s border crossing.

Day 1: Arrival in Dubrovnik

Day 2: Day Trip to Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina

An early departure crosses the border into Bosnia and Herzegovina, roughly two and a half hours by private transfer, arriving in Mostar by mid-morning.

The city’s centerpiece is the Stari Most, or Old Bridge, a 16th-century Ottoman structure destroyed during the 1990s war and painstakingly rebuilt using original techniques and salvaged stone, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Time is spent exploring the old bazaar surrounding it, with its coppersmiths and traditional Bosnian coffee houses, before a stop for a traditional lunch overlooking the Neretva River.

The afternoon includes a visit to one of the city’s remaining war-scarred buildings, left deliberately untouched as a memorial, offering a quieter, more reflective counterpoint to the bridge’s postcard views.

The evening returns to Dubrovnik.

Day 2: Day Trip to Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Day 3: Travel to Kotor, Montenegro

A private transfer heads south along the coast into Montenegro, roughly two hours from Dubrovnik, arriving at the Bay of Kotor by early afternoon.

Often described as Europe’s southernmost fjord, though technically a submerged river canyon, the bay is ringed by dramatic limestone mountains that drop almost directly into the water.

The afternoon is spent exploring Kotor’s own walled Old Town, considerably quieter than Dubrovnik’s, with a climb partway up the city walls toward the Fortress of San Giovanni for a sweeping view over the bay, before returning to Dubrovnik for the evening.

Day 3: Travel to Kotor, Montenegro

Day 4: Bay of Kotor Boat Excursion

A second day in Montenegro is spent on the water rather than on foot, with a private boat trip around the Bay of Kotor itself.

Stops include Our Lady of the Rocks, a small artificial island built around a church, reached only by boat, and the fishing village of Perast, with its stone houses lining the waterfront.

The afternoon allows time in Kotor itself before the return drive to Dubrovnik.

Day 4: Bay of Kotor Boat Excursion

Day 5: Departure

A final morning at Villa Dubrovnik to enjoy the hotel’s private beach or a last treatment at the Villa Spa, before departure.
