This nine-day journey takes you to the places where Greek gods were born, heroes fought monsters, and legends began. From Crete’s labyrinth to the summit of Mount Olympus, you will walk in the footsteps of mythology whilst staying in exceptional hotels and enjoying private expert guides who bring these timeless tales to life.

This tour is a must if you are a history buff or if you have seen the film 300. Exploring Greece through its myths is a wonderful way to discover its extraordinary culture. The Greek myths continue to fuel the stories we tell today, from Disney films (hello, Hercules) to bestselling LGBTQ+ novels like The Song of Achilles.

What is so great about the Greek myths?

Greek mythology is not just ancient history—it is the foundation of European culture and still shapes how we think, speak, and tell stories. From Renaissance art to modern films, the gods and heroes of ancient Greece appear everywhere: we talk about someone’s “Achilles heel,” describe a lengthy journey as an “odyssey,” or call something “herculean” without thinking twice.

The myths provided templates for Western literature, philosophy, and psychology—Jung’s archetypes, Freud’s Oedipus complex, and countless narrative structures all trace back to these ancient tales. For travellers, Greece offers something genuinely rare: the chance to stand exactly where these stories were born.

You are not just reading about Theseus and the Minotaur in a book—you are walking through the actual Palace of Knossos. You are not watching a documentary about Apollo—you are standing on Delos, where he was supposedly born.

This tangible connection between myth and place is magnetic, drawing millions of visitors each year who want to experience the landscapes that fired the ancient imagination. In an age of virtual everything, Greece delivers something refreshingly real: stories that have survived 3,000 years, rooted in places you can still visit, touch, and explore. It is cultural tourism at its most profound.

In detail

Days 1-3: Crete – The Labyrinth of the Minotaur

Your mythological odyssey begins in Crete, the largest Greek island and, according to legend, the birthplace of Zeus himself. Hidden from his father Cronus—who had the unfortunate habit of devouring his children—the infant king of the gods was raised in a cave on Mount Ida. Yet Crete’s most famous myth is darker still: King Minos, the Minotaur, and the deadly labyrinth beneath the Palace of Knossos.

Fly into Heraklion and check into a luxury hotel such as the Blue Palace Resort in Elounda or the Abaton Island Resort & Spa. After settling in, meet your private guide for an exploration of the Palace of Knossos, Europe’s oldest city. Walking through the restored throne room and frescoed chambers, your guide will recount the story of Theseus and the Minotaur, Ariadne’s golden thread, and the archaeological detective work that uncovered this Bronze Age civilisation. The palace’s labyrinthine layout makes it easy to imagine how the legend first took root.

Spend your second day exploring Crete’s mythological landscape. Visit the Cave of Zeus on Mount Ida or the Dikteon Cave near Psychro, both claiming to be the god’s birthplace. The drive takes you through dramatic mountain scenery and traditional villages where old men still gather in kafeneions. In the afternoon, continue to the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, home to the finest Minoan artefacts, including the famous Snake Goddess figurines and frescoes of bull-leaping—possibly the inspiration for the Minotaur legend itself.

Your third day offers a choice: explore the Minoan palace of Phaistos, with its mysterious undeciphered disc, or head south to Matala, where caves in the cliffs were said to shelter nymphs—and in the 1960s, became a bohemian haven for hippies.

Days 1-3: Crete – The Labyrinth of the Minotaur

Days 4-5: Athens & Delos – Birthplace of the Divine Twins

From Crete, fly to Athens (or take the overnight ferry if you prefer a more romantic arrival). Check into a five-star hotel in Plaka or Kolonaki.

Spend the afternoon exploring Athens’ mythological heart. On a private guided tour of the Acropolis, the Parthenon and Erechtheion come vividly to life. Below, the Ancient Agora is where Theseus—having survived the Minotaur—was celebrated as Athens’ greatest king. Your guide will connect the dots between mythology and history, explaining how the Panathenaic Festival honoured Athena’s victory over Poseidon for the city’s patronage. Visit the Temple of Olympian Zeus, where only 15 of the original 104 colossal columns remain, and the Theatre of Dionysus, dedicated to the god of wine and revelry.

The following morning, catch an early ferry from Piraeus to Mykonos (approximately 2.5–3 hours). After checking into your Mykonos hotel, take a short boat trip to Delos, one of Greece’s most significant archaeological and mythological sites. According to legend, Leto, fleeing Hera’s jealous wrath, gave birth here to the divine twins Apollo and Artemis. The island became so sacred that in ancient times no one was allowed to be born or to die there.

With your private guide, explore the Terrace of the Lions, marble guardians dedicated to Apollo; the ancient theatre; and the House of Dionysus with its extraordinary mosaics. Standing atop Mount Kynthos, enjoy panoramic views across the Cyclades—the very islands said in myth to form a circle (kyklos) around sacred Delos.

Return to Mykonos for a sunset dinner at Scorpios or Alemagou, soaking up the modern island glamour that contrasts so strikingly with Delos’s timeless sanctity.

Days 4-5: Athens & Delos – Birthplace of the Divine Twins

Days 6-9: Mount Olympus & Thessaloniki – Home of the Gods

The final leg of your journey takes you north to Macedonia and the mythical home of the twelve Olympian gods. Fly from Mykonos to Thessaloniki (or from Athens if direct flights are not available).

Dedicate your first evening to exploring Thessaloniki, Greece’s vibrant second city. Wander along the impressive Byzantine walls, see the iconic White Tower, and enjoy excellent tavernas in the Ladadika district. The Archaeological Museum houses treasures from ancient Macedonia, including finds from Vergina, where Philip II of Macedon—father of Alexander the Great—was buried.

The next morning, drive to Litochoro, the traditional gateway to Mount Olympus (around 90 minutes from Thessaloniki). Check into a boutique mountain hotel such as the Dion Palace Resort & Spa at the foot of the mountain. In the afternoon, explore the archaeological site of Dion, ancient Macedonia’s sacred city dedicated to Zeus. Here, in the shadow of Olympus, Macedonian kings offered sacrifices to the gods before embarking on military campaigns. The site includes sanctuaries to Zeus, Demeter and Isis, remarkably preserved mosaics, and an atmospheric ancient theatre.

Your Olympus experience depends on your fitness level and appetite for adventure. For the ambitious, a guided trek to Mytikas peak (2,917m)—the throne of Zeus himself and Greece’s highest point—requires two days with an overnight in a mountain refuge. The climb is challenging but rewards you with extraordinary views and the unforgettable sense of standing where the ancients believed the gods held court.

For a less strenuous but equally mythological option, take a half-day guided hike to Prionia (1,100m) through the dramatic Enipeas Gorge, where waterfalls tumble through primordial forest. Along the way, your guide will share stories of how the gods feasted on ambrosia, settled disputes, and observed mortal affairs from their mist-shrouded peaks.

Spend your final morning exploring the foothills before driving back to Thessaloniki. If time allows, stop at Vergina to see the extraordinary royal tombs of the Macedonian kings, including the golden larnax that once held Philip II’s remains.

Depart from Thessaloniki, or extend your stay for a final evening of mezze, local wine, and reflection on a journey through Greece’s most enduring stories.
