At a glance
De L’Europe Amsterdam stands as a remarkable testament to the city’s layered history, quite literally built on the foundations of a medieval fortress that once defended Amsterdam. Travelling back to 1482, we find a much smaller, more vulnerable city whose citizens constructed a defensive wall with a fortress, one of its main towers named ‘Het Rondeel’, standing exactly where De L’Europe Amsterdam is located today.
The magnificent 19th-century red-brick building we see now was built in 1895–1896, when the old structure was demolished and replaced by the 50-room Hotel de L’Europe, designed by architect Willem Hamer Jr. It officially opened its doors in 1896 and was designated a protected national monument (rijksmonument) in 2001.
The hotel’s story took a defining turn in the 1950s when it caught the eye of Alfred ‘Freddy’ Heineken. He became a regular guest, falling so deeply in love with its grand atmosphere and historic character that he eventually bought it himself. De L’Europe remains Amsterdam’s first and only family-owned luxury hotel, now proudly owned by the HEINEKEN company. This unique connection between Dutch brewing heritage and luxury hospitality is woven into the property’s identity, most notably in the celebrated Freddy’s Bar – named after Freddy Heineken himself – a refined gentleman’s pub where guests and locals alike have gathered for years to socialise and unwind.
