Xigera Safari Lodge sits on Paradise Island in the heart of the Moremi Game Reserve, surrounded by deep channels, papyrus swamps, and seasonal floodplains within a private 4,500-hectare concession.

The name, pronounced “kee-jera,” comes from the Pied Kingfisher that navigates the waterways around the island. The lodge was rebuilt and reopened in 2021 by the Tollman family, whose Red Carnation Hotels group drew on more than five decades of experience in hospitality to reimagine what a safari lodge could be.

The result holds Africa’s largest private collection of contemporary art in a hospitality setting, with every piece of furniture, sculpture, and ceramic commissioned specifically for the property from 80 of Africa’s most recognized designers and makers.

The lodge is fully solar powered, plastic-free in its operations, and sources produce from local farmers where possible. It is the only camp within its concession, with a maximum of 24 guests at any one time.

Food & Drink

Dining at Xigera operates without set times or a fixed schedule, built around the rhythm of the day and the activities around it. The open kitchen and dining room allow guests to watch the preparation of meals, with menus drawing on local produce and indigenous ingredients including baobab.

The wine list is served from a cellar that includes bottles from Bouchard Finlayson, the Tollman family’s Cape winelands estate in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley.

Bush dining, boma dinners around the fire-pit sculpture by artist-blacksmith Conrad Hicks, and private in-suite dining are all available. Storytelling and stargazing around the boma fire are a standard part of the evening programme.

Spa & Wellness

Xigera has two spa treatment rooms, a gym, and a swimming pool overlooking the Okavango Delta. Treatments draw on African botanicals and indigenous ingredients, with baobab oil, marula, and African potato balm featuring throughout the menu.

Private yoga sessions can be arranged at any point during the stay. Spa treatments can also be taken in the suite on request. The gym is fully equipped and open throughout the day.

Activities

Xigera’s position on permanent water year-round means the activity programme runs across land and water. Game drives in open 4×4 vehicles operate in the morning, afternoon, and evening, with a maximum of four to six guests per vehicle and optional night drives available outside the reserve boundary.

Glass-bottomed mokoro excursions move through the channels at water level, with the glass floor allowing views of the aquatic life below. Motorboat safaris reach the open waterways of the broader Delta. Walking safaris are available outside the reserve boundary.

The Art and Design Tour covers the lodge’s full collection with a specialist guide. Catch-and-release fishing operates seasonally just outside the Moremi reserve boundary.
