Bora Bora is the island that taught the rest of the world how to do an overwater bungalow.
Here at Out Of Office, we truly understand the world you live in, and the world you want to explore. Our attention to detail, exceptional service and deep understanding of both luxury travel and LGBTQ+ travel make us a fantastic choice for those looking for a travel experience where exclusivity meets inclusivity.
The lagoon is the reason people come. A flat, vivid blue, sheltered by a ring of reef, with Mount Otemanu rising out of the middle of it. Most days are spent on it, in it, or looking at it from a deck.
There are five stand-out resorts on the lagoon. The Four Seasons, the St Regis, the Conrad, the Westin and Le Bora Bora by Pearl. The question on most trips here is which one to choose, not what else to do. The answer depends on what kind of trip you want.
Beyond the lagoon, the island itself is small. A jeep tour around it takes half a day. Mount Otemanu is for those who want a hike, and the cultural side of Polynesia is worth a night out of the resort. But Bora Bora is one of the few destinations where staying in your hotel is the point of the trip, not a failure of imagination.
For LGBTQ+ travellers, French Polynesia is arguably the most welcoming tropical destination on earth. Homosexuality has never been criminalized here, same-sex marriage has been legal since 2013 through French law, and the resorts welcome same-sex couples as standard.
There’s no gay scene as such, because the island is too small and too quiet to have one, but the privacy and the acceptance are part of what makes it work for honeymoons.
Remote even by South Pacific standards, Bora Bora’s isolation is part of its appeal. The journey is long, but that’s exactly what preserves the sense of privacy, exclusivity and escape that makes it one of the world’s most coveted luxury destinations.

Contact usBora Bora is a small volcanic island in French Polynesia, part of the Society Islands archipelago in the South Pacific. The island itself is around 12 square miles, ringed by a coral reef that creates the calm turquoise lagoon the destination is known for. Mount Otemanu rises 727 metres at the centre of the island.
French Polynesia is a French overseas collectivity, so the local language is French and the currency is the CFP Franc, though US dollars are widely accepted at the resorts.
Most international visitors arrive on Tahiti and connect to Bora Bora by a 50-minute domestic flight with Air Tahiti. From the resorts, transfers from the airport are typically by boat across the lagoon, which most guests find is the moment the trip starts to feel real.UK and US citizens do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days.
The time difference is GMT-10, which means Bora Bora is one of the slowest places to adjust to and one of the slowest to come back from.
Bora Bora, part of French Polynesia, stands out as one of the few places in the world that has never enacted anti-LGBTQ+ laws, offering an environment of inherent acceptance and openness. As a result, the island has become a serene haven for the queer community, where LGBTQ+ travellers can enjoy a seamless and comfortable visit.
As a territory of France, French Polynesia recognizes same-sex marriage, allowing LGBTQ+ couples to legally tie the knot in one of the most stunning destinations on Earth. Bora Bora’s picture-perfect landscapes, with its turquoise lagoons and overwater bungalows, provide a breathtaking backdrop for weddings, honeymoons, or romantic escapes.
While Bora Bora does not have a distinct LGBTQ+ scene or nightlife, the island’s welcoming atmosphere is reflected in its luxury resorts and hospitality industry, which embrace diversity and cater to all guests with exceptional service. Visitors can expect privacy, exclusivity, and a sense of ease throughout their stay.
Bora Bora offers LGBTQ+ travellers a rare combination of legal recognition, cultural acceptance, and unparalleled natural beauty, making it a dream destination for those seeking romance and tranquility.
Bora Bora is one of the destinations our specialists know best. Between them, they’ve stayed at the five lagoon resorts (Four Seasons, St Regis, Conrad, Westin and Le Bora Bora by Pearl), and they’ll tell you straight which one suits the trip you’re planning.
That experience shows up in the details. The right overwater bungalow category, with a view of Otemanu rather than the back of another villa. The seaplane transfer that turns the journey from Tahiti into part of the holiday. The private boat operator we use rather than the resort’s standard lagoon tour. The dinner reservation at Lagoon by Jean-Georges.
As LGBTQ+ travel specialists, we also know which resorts properly welcome same-sex couples. In Bora Bora, all five do, which isn’t true of every tropical destination. For honeymoons, anniversaries and milestone trips, that’s what we’re known for.
Every trip we book is fully tailor-made. You’ll have one dedicated specialist from your first enquiry through to the day you fly home.
You’ll spend most of your trip on or in it, and you should. Take a private boat tour, snorkel with rays and reef sharks at the lagoonarium, or spend an afternoon on a motu picnic at one of the sandbar islands.
The volcanic peak in the middle of the island is the shot every photographer comes for, and a helicopter or seaplane tour is the way to see it properly. Twenty minutes in the air over the lagoon and Otemanu is the single most spectacular thing you’ll do here, and the view nobody who only stays on a deck gets to see.
The best resort restaurants here are built on stilts above the lagoon, and the lights from the deck attract fish to the water beneath you while you eat. Lagoon by Jean-Georges at the St Regis is the headline name, and there are quieter equivalents at the Four Seasons and the Conrad.
Bora Bora is one of the most expensive island destinations in the world, and one of the most consistent. The five lagoon resorts (Four Seasons, St Regis, Conrad, Westin and Le Bora Bora by Pearl) all operate at a true five-star standard, and the question on a Bora Bora trip is less about whether the hotel will deliver and more about which one suits you best.
Each one has a different character. The Four Seasons is the largest and most polished, with the strongest service and the best private lagoon for snorkelling out front. The St Regis has the biggest villas in French Polynesia and the most famous overwater dining at Lagoon by Jean-Georges.
The Conrad sits on its own motu with views of Otemanu across the lagoon, and is the favourite for couples who want quiet. The Westin and Le Bora Bora by Pearl offer the same lagoon and the same overwater bungalows at a slightly lower price point, and both are excellent.
Beyond the hotels, the experiences are what you’d expect from a destination this expensive. Private boat charters with a skipper and a chef on board. Sunset dinners on a private motu, set up just for the two of you. Couples massages on your own deck. Helicopter transfers from Tahiti so you skip the domestic flight. These are the details our specialists handle as standard.

Bora Bora is reached via Papeete’s Faa’a International Airport on Tahiti, followed by a 50-minute domestic flight with Air Tahiti to the island itself. The lagoon views on the descent are part of why people come.
Los Angeles is the natural gateway. Air Tahiti Nui and United both fly direct to Papeete in around 8 hours, and most travellers connect onward to Bora Bora the same day. From the East Coast, route via LAX and consider a night in Los Angeles on the way out if you’d rather break the journey.
There is no direct flight from London. The most popular routing is via Los Angeles, with onward Air Tahiti Nui or United service to Papeete. Total journey time is around 22 hours including the transfer. Air France via Paris is the alternative, and a stopover in Paris on the way out works well for travellers who’d rather split the trip in two.
We’ll handle the flights, the Papeete-to-Bora Bora connection, the seaplane transfer if your resort offers one, and any stopover hotels.
