The Treehotel in Harads, northern Sweden, sits just 50 kilometres below the Arctic Circle and has been one of the world’s most architecturally distinctive hotels since opening in 2010. Rather than conventional rooms, the hotel offers a collection of individually designed treehouses, each created by a different architect and suspended between four and ten metres above the forest floor.
The collection includes the Mirrorcube, the Bird’s Nest, the UFO, the Blue Cone, the Cabin, the Dragonfly, the 7th Room designed by Snøhetta, and the Biosphere, which features a facade of around 350 birdhouses attracting local species throughout the year. A suite called Oasis, designed by architects Nadén and Lind with a private sauna and hot tub sleeping five.
Each room is powered by local hydroelectricity with low-energy LED lighting and water-efficient bathrooms, with showers and meals taken in the main guesthouse, Brittas Guesthouse, which also houses a sauna, jacuzzi and small spa.
Open year-round, the hotel offers Northern Lights viewing in winter and the Midnight Sun in summer, with activities including snowmobile tours, horse riding, reindeer and moose visits and dining on the frozen Lule River.

Accommodation
Bird's nest
The Bird’s Nest is designed to blend seamlessly into the forest, its exterior woven from hundreds of interlaced branches and twigs to create the appearance of an enormous nest suspended in the trees.
Designed by architect Bertil Harström, it sits above the forest floor and is accessed via a retractable staircase activated by a button on a tree below.
The 17 square metre interior sleeps up to four guests with one double bed and two single beds, each with its own porthole window. A small bathroom with an incinerating toilet and water-efficient sink is included, with showers and meals taken in the main guesthouse nearby.
The UFO
The UFO is one of the most distinctive cabins at Treehotel, suspended between the trees on wires and beams in the form of a 1950s-style flying saucer.
Built from lightweight, high-strength composite materials, it sits four to six metres above the forest floor and is accessed via a retractable ladder that descends from the belly of the craft at the click of a button.
The 30 square metre interior sleeps five guests, with one double bed and three single beds, small porthole windows, a bathroom with an incinerating toilet and a living area. Showers and meals are taken in the main guesthouse nearby. A terrace platform outside offers views through the forest towards the Lule River.
The Cabin
The Cabin is a 24 square metre room designed by Cyrén, perched on a sharp hillside overlooking the Lule River valley and accessed via a long horizontal bridge strung high between the trees.
Inside there is a double bed, a lounge area with large windows offering sweeping views over the forest and river valley, underfloor heating, woollen rugs and a bathroom with an incinerating toilet.
A rooftop terrace sits above the room, ideal for Northern Lights viewing in winter and the Midnight Sun in summer. The most intimate of the collection. The Cabin Fits two people making it perfect for an avant-garde honeymoon.
The Mirrorcube
The Mirrorcube is a 4x4x4 metre cube suspended four to six metres above the forest floor, designed by Bolle Tham and Martin Videgård.
Its exterior is clad entirely in mirrored glass that reflects the surrounding trees and sky, making it appear to vanish into the forest. The mirrored walls are covered with an infrared film invisible to humans but visible to birds, preventing collisions. A tree trunk grows directly through the room, enclosed by an aluminium frame that forms the base of the structure.
The plywood interior sleeps two with a double bed, lounge, bathroom with an incinerating toilet and a secret balcony accessible by a step ladder. A 12-metre bridge leads up to the room. Showers and sauna are in the main guesthouse nearby
The 7th Room
The largest cabin at Treehotel, designed by Norwegian architecture studio Snøhetta and completed in 2016. It accommodates five guests across two bedrooms, a lounge with a pellet stove and a north-facing window positioned for Northern Lights viewing. A transparent floor looks ten metres down to the forest below, and a transparent railing overlooks the Lule River valley.
The defining feature is a netted outdoor terrace suspended above the forest with a living pine tree growing through its centre, where guests can lie back and look directly up at the sky. A staircase leads up to the room with a small luggage lift alongside it.

Food & Drink
All meals are served at Brittas Guesthouse, the main building of the Treehotel, set in an authentic 1930s to 1950s style interior.
The restaurant serves a buffet breakfast alongside a menu of Swedish Lapland specialities for lunch and dinner. The kitchen specialises in wild game, with dishes built around locally sourced ingredients including moose, reindeer, foraged mushrooms and berries from the surrounding landscape.
Room service is also available for guests who prefer to eat in their treehouse.
Other Activities
Storforsen Nature Reserve
Storforsen is the largest natural rapids in Europe, located around 80 kilometres from the Treehotel. Even in extreme cold the water does not freeze. The drive through pine forest offers good opportunities to spot reindeer along the way.
Northern Lights Snowmobile Tour
Guided snowmobile tours head out into the Arctic wilderness after dark in search of the Northern Lights, with the option to stop at a heated tipi tent on a frozen lake for a candlelit dinner along the way. Sightings cannot be guaranteed, but the remote location and clear skies give some of the best viewing conditions in the country.
Tree Dining
Dinner served ten metres above the forest floor in the treetops, available during both winter and summer and one of the most memorable ways to experience the surrounding landscape.
Dog Sledding and Horse Sleigh Excursions
Dog sledding tours cover the frozen forest and open terrain, while horse-drawn sleigh excursions offer a quieter and more traditional alternative. Both are available during the winter season.
