Japan demands expertise. The country operates on different logistics than anywhere else you’ve travelled: limited English signage, complex reservation systems for kaiseki restaurants that book months ahead, ryokans with specific check-in windows, and a train network so efficient that missing a connection by two minutes means reworking your entire day.
Here at Out Of Office, we truly understand the world you live in, and the world you want to explore. Our attention to detail, exceptional service and deep understanding of both luxury travel and LGBTQ+ travel make us a fantastic choice for those looking for a travel experience where exclusivity meets inclusivity.
We’ve spent a decade planning luxury Japan itineraries for LGBTQ+ travellers who want more than a standard Tokyo-Kyoto loop.
Our specialists know which three-star Michelin restaurants accept international reservations, how to secure private after-hours access to Kyoto temples, and which onsen towns welcome same-sex couples without hesitation.
We arrange direct relationships with properties that don’t appear on booking platforms: family-run ryokans in the Japanese Alps, private tea ceremony masters in Kanazawa, guides who previously worked for the Imperial Household Agency.
Whether you’re timing a trip to Hokkaido’s powder snow season, chasing cherry blossoms from Kyushu to Tohoku, or building a two-week culinary journey through regional specialties, we handle the complexity that makes Japan exceptional.
You get the kaiseki dinners, bullet train transfers, and temple access. We manage the reservations, translations, and logistics that turn ambitious itineraries into seamless reality.
Japan is easily reached from the US, with direct flights to Tokyo from New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago. From the UK, British Airways and Japan Airlines operate non-stop services from London in around 12–13 hours. For most itineraries, flying into Tokyo and out of Osaka offers the most seamless routing. Your Out Of Office specialist will arrange everything around your plans.

Contact usJapan stretches 1,900 miles from subtropical Okinawa to subarctic Hokkaido, divided into four main islands and thousands of smaller ones. Most luxury itineraries focus on Honshu, the largest island, where Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Hiroshima anchor different regional experiences.
The country’s mountainous spine means population clusters along coastlines and valleys, connected by infrastructure that makes complex multi-city trips surprisingly manageable.
The Shinkansen bullet train network handles intercity travel between major destinations. Tokyo to Kyoto takes 2 hours 15 minutes, Osaka to Hiroshima under 90 minutes.
We book reserved Green Car seats for our clients, so expect more legroom, quieter carriages, and complimentary beverages. For regions the Shinkansen doesn’t reach, Japan’s domestic flight network connects 60+ airports, with frequent service between Tokyo and cities like Sapporo, Fukuoka, and Kagoshima.
Navigation requires advance planning. Train stations announce stops in Japanese first, English second (if at all). Restaurant menus outside tourist zones rarely translate.
Temple visiting hours vary by season, and some properties enforce strict check-in windows. We provide our clients with detailed day-by-day instructions, pre-arranged station meet-and-greets in complex terminals, and 24/7 English-speaking support for the inevitable moments when Google Translate fails.
Regional timing matters. Cherry blossoms move north from late March to early May. Fall foliage reverses the pattern, starting in Hokkaido in September and reaching Kyoto by mid-November. We track bloom forecasts and adjust itineraries accordingly—sometimes by just 48 hours—to catch peak seasons.
Japan remains the only G7 country without legal recognition for same-sex couples. While partnership certificates now cover over 92% of the population across 530+ municipalities, these provide limited benefits without the legal protections of marriage, including inheritance rights, spousal visas, or parental authority.
Multiple high courts have ruled Japan’s same-sex marriage ban unconstitutional between 2021 and 2025, including decisions in Sapporo, Tokyo, Fukuoka, Nagoya, and Osaka. However, in November 2025, a different Tokyo High Court ruling upheld the ban, creating conflicting precedents. These cases await Supreme Court review, though Japan’s high court cannot mandate marriage equality. Only the National Diet can change the law.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who took office in October 2025, opposes same-sex marriage. During a 2025 campaign debate, she stated she opposed legalizing same-sex unions, though adding that having a same-sex partner was “fine.”
This marks a shift from her predecessor Shigeru Ishiba, who expressed public sympathy for same-sex couples and suggested marriage equality would “make the nation happier.”
The government extended nine laws in 2025 to recognise same-sex couples in “de facto marriages,” including domestic violence protections and housing rights. However, 120 laws, primarily covering social security and taxes, still exclude same-sex couples. Japan has no national anti-discrimination legislation protecting LGBTQ+ individuals in employment, housing, or public services.
Urban areas like Tokyo and Osaka maintain visible LGBTQ+ communities with Pride events, inclusive nightlife, and advocacy organizations. Public opinion polls show approximately 68% of Japanese support same-sex marriage, with higher support among younger generations. However, traditional family structures and conservative political leadership continue to slow legislative progress.
For LGBTQ+ travellers, Japan presents a complex landscape. Same-sex couples face no legal penalties, hotels and restaurants in major cities serve LGBTQ+ guests without issue, and street-level discrimination is uncommon.
However, couples cannot access spousal benefits, some traditional ryokans apply their own policies regarding room-sharing, and public displays of affection between any couples remain culturally uncommon. Most onsen remain gender-segregated, and mixed-gender baths are restricted in Tokyo, though welcoming options exist elsewhere across the country. We identify LGBTQ+ welcoming properties and navigate these nuances based on our experience arranging Japan travel for our clients.
Japan can feel unknowable to first-time visitors. The cultural codes run deep, the etiquette is specific, and the logistics — complex reservation systems, ryokan check-in windows, a train network where missing a connection by two minutes reshapes your day — reward experience rather than improvisation.
Our team knows which three-star Michelin restaurants accept international reservations, how to secure private after-hours access to Kyoto temples, and which onsen towns combine exceptional hospitality with a genuinely welcoming atmosphere.
We work with properties that don’t appear on booking platforms: family-run ryokans in the Japanese Alps, private tea ceremony masters in Kanazawa, guides who previously worked for the Imperial Household Agency.
Whether you’re timing a trip around Hokkaido’s powder snow season, chasing cherry blossoms from Kyushu to Tohoku, or building a two-week culinary journey through regional specialties, we handle the complexity that makes Japan exceptional.
You get the kaiseki dinners, the bullet train transfers, and the temple access. We manage the reservations, translations, and logistics that turn ambitious itineraries into seamless reality.
A ryokan stay is not a hotel experience with Japanese aesthetics bolted on. It’s a completely different relationship with hospitality. Yukata robes, tatami floors, multi-course kaiseki served in your room by a dedicated attendant, and an outdoor onsen fed by natural mineral springs. The best are in the mountain towns of the Kiso Valley or around Takayama.
Kyoto’s temples receive millions of visitors a year, which means the standard 9am experience involves queuing behind tour groups. We arrange private early-morning and after-hours access: Fushimi Inari’s thousand torii gates before the crowds arrive, Kiyomizu-dera’s wooden terrace at dusk, Zen meditation sessions at temples that don’t advertise English programs.
Japan has more Michelin stars than any other country, and kaiseki is the format that justifies the claim. Multi-course menus built entirely around what’s in season: spring bamboo shoots, summer ayu river fish, autumn matsutake mushrooms, served in rooms where the tableware, flower arrangement, and scroll painting are chosen to match the meal.

Most international travellers arrive at Tokyo’s Narita or Haneda airports, though Osaka’s Kansai International Airport serves Kansai-focused itineraries. Direct flights from the US take 11 to 13 hours from the West Coast, 14 to 16 hours from the East Coast. Major carriers include ANA, Japan Airlines, United, and American. We book premium cabin seats as soon as schedules open to secure preferred aircraft and departure times.
US, UK, and EU passport holders receive 90-day visa-free entry. We provide clients with pre-filled customs forms and meet-and-greet services that expedite the airport-to-hotel transfer, particularly valuable after long-haul flights.
Japan’s Shinkansen bullet train network connects Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, and other major cities at speeds up to 200 mph. Tokyo to Kyoto takes 2 hours 15 minutes, faster than flying when you factor in airport transfers. We book reserved Green Car seats for all clients. These first-class carriages offer more legroom, power outlets, complimentary beverages, and quieter environments than standard cars.
For destinations the Shinkansen doesn’t reach (Hokkaido, Okinawa, regional cities), Japan’s domestic flight network provides frequent service. We coordinate flight times with train schedules to minimize connection stress.
Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto operate extensive subway and train networks with English signage at major stations. Taxis are metered and professional, though drivers rarely speak English.
We provide clients with hotel addresses written in Japanese and pre-programmed Google Maps links. For complex itineraries or clients preferring privacy, we arrange private car service with English-speaking drivers, particularly useful for luggage-heavy transfers or rural ryokan access where public transit doesn’t reach.
