Luxury Ultimate Guide to Gay Travel in Mauritius vacations

Ultimate Guide to Gay Travel in Mauritius

Our guide to a gay-friendly trip to Mauritius.

Ask a handful of travellers to name the most beautiful island in the Indian Ocean, and Mauritius comes up more often than almost anywhere else. Ask an LGBTQ+ traveller the same question a decade ago, and the answer might have come with a hesitation. Today, that hesitation has largely disappeared, and this guide exists to explain exactly why, along with everything else worth knowing before booking a trip.

This is the guide we wished existed the first time a client asked us, quite reasonably, whether Mauritius was actually safe and welcoming for a same-sex couple. It is not a comparison against the Maldives or the Seychelles, though we have written those too. It is simply everything about Mauritius itself, gathered into one place.

Is Mauritius Gay-Friendly?

The short answer is yes, and the legal picture behind that answer has changed meaningfully in recent years. In October 2023, Mauritius’s Supreme Court struck down the colonial-era law criminalizing same-sex sexual activity, a landmark ruling that placed the country among a small number of African nations to take this step. Alongside the ruling, Mauritius has introduced anti-discrimination protections covering sexual orientation and gender identity, making it one of the few nations in the region to offer this level of legal recognition.

Social attitudes tend to move more slowly than legislation, and Mauritius is no exception. In Port Louis and the island’s larger resort areas, attitudes are generally relaxed, particularly within the hospitality industry itself, where staff are accustomed to a genuinely international clientele. In smaller villages and more rural areas, a degree of discretion is still sensible, in much the same way it would be across large parts of the world. Mauritius is also a signatory to the United Nations’ Joint Statement on Ending Acts of Violence and Human Rights Violations Based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, alongside ninety-five other nations, a commitment that reflects a country actively moving in the right direction rather than one that has already arrived.

For LGBTQ+ honeymooners in particular, this combination of legal protection, luxury infrastructure, and genuine natural beauty is difficult to match elsewhere in the region.

Best Time to Visit Mauritius

Mauritius sits in the Southern Hemisphere, which means its seasons run opposite to those in the United States and Europe. Broadly, the island has two seasons rather than four: a hot, humid summer from November to April and a cooler, drier winter from May to October.

November through April brings the warmest water and the greatest chance of a tropical shower, along with a small risk of cyclones between December and January. This period suits travellers who want the warmest possible seas for diving and snorkelling and do not mind an occasional afternoon downpour. May through October is generally considered the most comfortable stretch for most visitors, with June through August standing as the driest months of the year, and September through October offering a gentle warming trend while remaining dry enough for reliable outdoor plans.

For honeymooners specifically, September through December tends to combine the best of both: settled weather, warm water, and a noticeably quieter island before the peak December crowds arrive.

Where to Stay in Mauritius

Mauritius rewards a bit of thought about which coast to choose, since each side of the island has a genuinely different character.

The east coast, home to properties like Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita and LUX* Belle Mare, tends to offer the calmest, most sheltered lagoons on the island, along with a livelier resort atmosphere and easy access to golf. The south coast, where Shanti Maurice and Heritage Le Telfair are found, is wilder and considerably quieter, with dramatic cliffs and a stronger emphasis on wellness. The west coast, home to Sugar Beach and Constance Le Prince Maurice, tends to offer some of the most reliable sunsets on the island, given its orientation, alongside a good mix of both liveliness and seclusion depending on the specific property.

None of Mauritius’s luxury resorts market themselves explicitly to LGBTQ+ guests, and none need to. Every property we recommend has been chosen with the same standard applied throughout our collection of hand-picked hotels: consistently excellent service, genuine discretion where wanted, and staff accustomed to welcoming every kind of couple and traveller without a second thought.

Things to Do in Mauritius

Mauritius is often filed away as a pure beach destination, and while its beaches genuinely earn that reputation, the island offers considerably more for travellers willing to leave the resort for a day.

Le Morne Brabant, a dramatic mountain on the island’s southwestern tip, carries real historical weight as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a former refuge for those escaping slavery. The hike to its summit is challenging but manageable with an experienced guide, and the views from the top are among the best on the island.

The Chamarel Seven Colored Earth Geopark is a genuinely strange and beautiful geological formation, where volcanic activity and mineral deposits have created sand dunes in shades ranging from deep purple to vivid red across a compact ten-hectare site.

Black River Gorges National Park, in the island’s southwest, offers waterfalls, hiking trails, and the chance to spot some of Mauritius’s rarest native wildlife within its rainforest interior.

For travellers who want to get in the water rather than simply look at it, Blue Bay Marine Park ranks among the best snorkelling and diving spots on the island, with warm, clear waters home to turtles, stingrays, and a genuinely impressive range of reef fish. Trou aux Biches and Flic en Flac are two more reliable spots for snorkelling, even without formal diving certification.

Getting to Mauritius

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, near the southeast of the island, handles the overwhelming majority of international arrivals, with direct flights available from London, Paris, Dubai, Johannesburg, and Singapore, among other major cities. From the United States, most routes connect through a hub in Europe, the Gulf, or South Africa, given the absence of any current direct flight between North America and Mauritius.

For those looking to arrive by sea, Mauritius has two main ports, in Port Louis and Mahebourg, both of which serve as stopovers for cruise ships as well as private vessels. Ferries also connect Mauritius to nearby Reunion and Rodrigues, though boat travel can be affected by seasonal weather, so schedules are worth confirming closer to departure.

Where This Fits Into a Longer Trip

Mauritius rarely needs to stand alone in an itinerary, though it holds up perfectly well when it does. For travellers who want a single, uninterrupted island stay, our Mauritius Island Escape pairs the more active east coast with a quieter, more secluded finish, while our Mauritius Wellness & Spa Retreat is built specifically around slowing down completely.

For those who want to combine Mauritius with a very different kind of adventure, our Luxury South Africa Safari & Mauritius Beach Escape and Sabi Sabi Game Reserve and Mauritius: Luxury Safari Escape both pair a South African safari with the island’s stillness as a second act. And for travellers drawn to the Indian Ocean’s other great islands, our Seychelles & Mauritius: Two Pearls of the Indian Ocean does the same with the Seychelles’ granite beaches.

If Mauritius is still one of several islands under consideration, our comparison guides go into more detail on how it stacks up: Maldives, Seychelles or Mauritius, which is better? and The Best Maldives Alternatives for a Same-Sex Honeymoon consider Mauritius alongside several other options.
