Mauritius has made significant strides in advancing LGBTQ+ rights, particularly with the landmark legalization of same-sex sexual activity in 2023. This move was a major step forward in recognizing the rights and freedoms of LGBTQ+ individuals in the country. Alongside this legal change, Mauritius has taken steps to protect its LGBTQ+ community by enacting anti-discrimination laws, ensuring that discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity is largely banned. This makes Mauritius one of the few African nations to offer such protections.
In addition to its domestic progress, Mauritius is committed to the global fight against LGBTQ+ discrimination and violence. The country is one of 96 nations that signed the “Joint Statement on Ending Acts of Violence and Human Rights Violations Based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity” at the United Nations, condemning violence and discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals worldwide.
Although challenges remain, particularly in terms of social acceptance in certain areas, Mauritius’ legal advancements and international commitments represent a significant positive shift for LGBTQ+ rights in the region. These developments signal growing recognition of LGBTQ+ individuals’ rights, making Mauritius a more welcoming environment for both residents and LGBTQ+ travelers.

Each of these suits is fitted with fine fittings which gives the room a very luxurious yet comfortable feel. The chic design is carried throughout the whole resort. Space is not compromised in these suites, with a large bedroom equipped with a king size bed, en-suite bathroom and seating area. These suite have a private balcony with outdoor furniture, perfect for you to sit in and watch the sunset every evening.
Deluxe Suites
This suite has a huge amount of you to enjoy. The master suite is inter-joined with a junior suite, making it perfect for a family or small group. There is expansive living space and direct access to the beach. Outside, there is a spacious terrace area which also has access to a private swimming pool. You will also receive extra privileges if you stay in these suites, such as champagne on arrival, a daily A la carte breakfast at Republik Beach Club & Grill, daily sunset cocktails and a complimentary mini-bar that is restocked daily.
Shangri La Suite
This is the gold standard room available at the Shangri-La Le Touessrok. It is the epitome of luxury with the master bedroom decorated and finished to an impeccable standard. The separate spacious living and dining area is perfect for you to lounge in and escape the hot Mauritian sun for a short while. The oversized terrace gives you unforgettable views you can’t get anywhere else.
