Barbados vs Bequia: Which Island Should You Visit?

Contrasting two distinctly different islands in the Caribbean

When it comes to choosing between Barbados and Bequia for your Caribbean getaway, it’s a bit like comparing champagne to a fine rum—both are exquisite, but they have distinctive charms. What’s more, both can be enjoyed alongside each other – if you’re the type of person who likes to break with convention. We’ll also unravel the mystery of how you get to Bequia and the best ways to combine it with Barbados.

Whether you’re drawn to luxury and activity or prefer tranquillity and authenticity, here’s how Barbados and Bequia stack up against each other.

The Beaches in Barbados and Bequia

Barbados is home to some of the best beaches in the Caribbean. The west coast, often called the “Platinum Coast,” is home to calm turquoise waters and powder-soft sands, ideal for swimming and sunbathing. Paynes Bay and Mullins Beach are particularly popular for their postcard-perfect settings and beach bars. Meanwhile, the south coast is ideal for water sports enthusiasts, offering kite surfing and snorkelling hotspots like Dover Beach. If you’re looking to escape the crowds, the rugged beauty of Bathsheba on the east coast is a surfer’s paradise.

In contrast, Bequia’s beaches provide a more tranquil setting. Smaller and more secluded, they provide a slightly more authentic Caribbean experience. Princess Margaret Beach, a stunning crescent of golden sand, is accessible via a short hike or boat ride, making it feel wonderfully remote. Lower Bay Beach offers similarly serene vibes, with excellent snorkelling just steps from the shore. Bequia’s beaches may lack the polish of Barbados’ luxury resorts, but they more than makeup for it with their unspoiled charm.

Barbados

Geography and Scenery

Barbados’ landscape is defined by gentle rolling hills, sugarcane plantations, and dramatic cliffs along its eastern Atlantic coastline. It’s a relatively flat island, making it easy to explore by car (we always suggested renting a car when exploring Barbados). The contrast between its calm west coast and wild, windswept east makes for a captivating mix of scenery. Its infrastructure is well-developed, and it’s possible to see the entire island in just a day.

Bequia, on the other hand, is part of the Grenadines and offers a more rugged and natural vibe. The island is hilly and lush, with striking views of its turquoise bays from nearly every vantage point. Admiralty Bay, the island’s natural harbour, is dotted with yachts and colourful fishing boats. Bequia’s smaller size and less developed feel shows you a different, more rugged side of the Caribbean.

Bequia

Things to Do in Barbados and Bequia

Barbados is bustling with activities, offering something for everyone. History buffs will enjoy exploring St. Nicholas Abbey or Bridgetown, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island’s food scene invites you to indulge in everything from fine dining at The Cliff to authentic fish fry experiences in Oistins. Nightlife thrives on the south coast, particularly in St. Lawrence Gap, where you’ll find bars, live music, and plenty of nightlife. Water activities are abundant, whether it’s snorkelling with sea turtles, paddleboarding, or catamaran cruises.

Bequia moves to a slower rhythm. This is a place to escape the crowds. You can visit the Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary, a charming conservation initiative, or hike the island’s lush trails to discover hidden beaches. Bequia is also a yachting paradise, so boat trips to nearby islands in the Grenadines, such as ultra-exclusive Mustique or the Tobago Cays, are a must. With its artisan community, Bequia also offers a chance to shop for unique, handcrafted souvenirs.

Barbados

Food and Drink in Barbados and Bequia

Barbados is a foodie’s delight. Known as the birthplace of rum, the island boasts world-famous distilleries like Mount Gay (yeah, lol) and Foursquare, where you can sample some of the Caribbean’s finest spirits. Its dining scene is equally impressive, ranging from upscale restaurants serving international cuisine to casual beachside eateries offering freshly caught seafood. The island’s street food, such as fish cakes and macaroni pie, is a must-try. We’d suggest avoiding all-inclusive plans in Barbados so you can explore the restaurants and street food beyond your resort.

Bequia’s dining scene is more low-key but no less delightful. Many of the island’s restaurants are family-run and focus on fresh, local ingredients. You’ll find plenty of seafood on offer, with dishes like grilled lobster or freshly prepared conch salad. For a rum punch with a view, head to Jack’s Beach Bar on Princess Margaret Beach.

Hotels and Accommodation

Barbados excels in luxury. The west coast is lined with world-class resorts and boutique hotels offering unparalleled comfort and service. From the exclusive Sandy Lane to the elegant Cobblers Cove, Barbados caters to discerning travellers seeking high-end hotels. For a more intimate experience, charming guesthouses and villas are also available, particularly on the quieter east coast.

Bequia’s accommodation reflects its rustic charm. The island is home to boutique hotels like Bequia Beach Hotel, where you’ll find understated luxury and a warm welcome. For those who value privacy, villas overlooking Admiralty Bay an even more remote experience. Bequia doesn’t offer the same level of glitz as Barbados, but its accommodation options are perfect for travellers who value character and authenticity. BARBADOS

Gay-Friendliness in Barbados and Bequia

Barbados is becoming increasingly progressive, particularly in its more tourist-focused areas. Many luxury hotels and restaurants are LGBTQ+ friendly, and the island’s welcoming vibe ensures that travellers feel at ease. However, as in much of the Caribbean, same-sex marriage is not yet legal, and cultural attitudes can vary. Sticking to inclusive spaces and established tourist zones is recommended. We can arrange the perfect gay-friendly itinerary for you: we only work with the most gay-friendly hotels and tour guides.

Bequia, like many of the smaller Caribbean islands, is less openly LGBTQ+ focused but maintains a laid-back and friendly atmosphere. While it may not have the dedicated LGBTQ+ infrastructure of larger destinations, visitors generally feel comfortable and welcome. Respect for the island’s traditional culture is key, and travellers will find that discretion and sensitivity go a long way.
