The Best Hotels in Barcelona for Gay Travelers

From W Hotel to Axel, discover Barcelona's distinctive luxury hotel scene

Barcelona is one of the hottest travel destinations in Europe. In this city, medieval streets wind around Modernist masterpieces, there, and Gothic architecture shares space with contemporary design hotels. It also has a uniquely urban beach culture: the beaches were made from scratch in the 1992 Summer Olympics (cue Freddie Mercury song!).

Barcelona is home to one of the biggest gay scenes on the planet. If that’s not enough, you can get a train up the coast and visit Sitges in less than an hour.

This is a city that invented its own rules of beauty, and its luxury hotels are no exception. From historic palaces that house jazz clubs to beachfront towers with infinity pools.

Axel Barcelona

Axel Barcelona is part of the Axel Hotels chain, which are “hetero-friendly” gay hotels. They’re specifically designed to be LGBTQ+-focused while welcoming all guests.

The hotel is located in Eixample, which is Barcelona’s main gay district (often called “Gayxample”), surrounded by gay bars, clubs, and restaurants. The rooftop Sky Bar is particularly popular with the LGBTQ+ community and offers great views. It’s also, unsurprisingly, one of the more fun hotels on our list. It’s a popular choice with the gay international jetset.

Soho House Barcelona

Soho House Barcelona sits pretty in a striking 18th-century building right in Plaça del Duc de Medinaceli, just two minutes from Las Ramblas with that dazzling salmon pink facade that’s absolutely stealing the show. The interiors are peppered with Gothic influences, Catalan prints, vaulted ceilings, and the most striking mismatch of bespoke and mid-century furnishings that pay perfect tribute to Barcelona’s Modernisme boom years.

The rooftop is truly the beating heart of the whole operation with candy-stripe daybeds and views that make you feel like you’re floating above Barcelona. There’s also a Cowshed spa tucked away in the basement that feels like a 1930s barber shop but infinitely more luxurious, a full gym with spinning and yoga classes, a proper cinema for screenings, and Cecconi’s restaurant serving Northern Italian perfection that’s actually open to the public.

Now for the rules. The most famous one is the complete ban on photography, videos, tablets, or laptops in most areas – you literally have to live in the moment and actually talk to people, imagine! The whole vibe is very “creative industry insider meets bohemian luxury” in the most beautifully curated 18th-century setting you can imagine.

Hotel Arts Barcelona

Standing 44 stories tall like a gleaming sail against the Mediterranean, this Ritz-Carlton property is Barcelona’s most recognizable luxury landmark. The architects Bruce Graham and Miguel Ruano originally designed it for the 1992 Olympics, and it’s been collecting accolades ever since.

With 483 rooms spread across those impressive stories, every accommodation has stunning views – either of the Mediterranean or across the cityscape. Five restaurants range from bistro casual to two Michelin-starred Enoteca, while the waterfront swimming pool and infinity pool are in a league of their own.

This is where you come to feel like you’re floating above Barcelona. The hotel’s art collection surpasses 500 pieces, turning your stay into a gallery experience with room service.

Hotel Casa Fuster

Hotel Casa Fuster

Built in 1908 by Lluís Domènech i Montaner (the genius behind Palau de la Música Catalana), this UNESCO World Heritage building was once considered the most expensive property in Barcelona. It was the first house in the city with white marble facades instead of the usual Montjuïc stone.

This Leading Hotels of the World property features 105 rooms and suites in a genuine Modernist palace on Passeig de Gràcia. The rooftop terrace offers panoramic city views, while the Michelin-starred Aleia Restaurant brings three-star chef Paulo Airaudo’s expertise to an immaculate setting. Every Thursday, Café Vienés transforms into an exclusive jazz club with dinner.

W Hotel Barcelona

W Barcelona

Rising like a giant sail from the Barceloneta beachfront (this is a luxury motif in Barcelona!), the W is Barcelona’s most photogenic hotel. This isn’t subtle luxury – it’s in-your-face glamour with 473 rooms that scream “I’m here to have a fabulous time.”

The poolside area feels like you’ve been transported to Miami, while the 26th-floor WET Deck offers the city’s highest rooftop pool and bar experience. Three restaurants and a super trendy lounge bar make this the place where luxury combines with a party atmosphere.

You’re literally staying in a landmark – the building looks like Dubai’s Burj Al Arab had a baby with a Mediterranean beach club. Plus, you can walk to the beach in your designer swimwear.

Nobu Hotel Barcelona

Nobu Hotel Barcelona

Part of the prestigious Preferred Hotels & Resorts Collection, this 259-room property brings Nobu’s signature blend of Japanese minimalism and international luxury to Barcelona.

The exclusive 25th-floor rooftop boasts the city’s highest pool and bar – a sun-drenched retreat by day for hotel guests and gathering spot by night. Barcelona’s first Nobu Restaurant and Kozara, a Japanese-inspired tapas bar, are both major draws. Nobu has mastered the nonpretentious luxury aesthetic. Just to add to its luxury credentials, the brand was co-founded by Robert De Niro.
