At a glance
Bairro Alto Hotel sits on Praça Luís de Camões at the intersection of Chiado and Bairro Alto, two of the most characterful neighbourhoods in Lisbon.
The building dates to the 18th century and was expanded by award-winning Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, who added a new wing that brought the total to 87 rooms across six categories, alongside a restaurant, patisserie, wellness centre, and rooftop terrace.
The renovation preserved the original facades while introducing a interior palette of warm tones, Portuguese craftsmanship, and Le Labo bath products throughout. All rooms feature double-glazed windows, ensuring quiet despite the hotel’s position in the heart of the city.
The location places guests at the centre of Lisbon’s cultural life. The Santa Catarina miradouro, the Chiado museum district, Rua Garrett’s bookshops and fashion houses, and the tram connections down to the waterfront are all within a few minutes’ walk.

Highlights
- 87 rooms across six categories, including 22 suites, all double-glazed windows overlooking Praça Luís de Camões, Rua das Flores, or Rua do Alecrim.
- BAHR restaurant, rooftop terrace bar, patisserie, and library bar.
- Wellness center, fitness center, and airport transfers for suite guests.

Portugal
Portugal runs on Central European Time, one hour ahead of the UK and six hours ahead of the East Coast of the US. The country is small enough that domestic travel between Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve is straightforward, by road, rail, or short-haul flight, with no meaningful time zone complications on multi-region itineraries. Tipping is less embedded in Portuguese culture than in the US.
Our Experts
If you like food, surfing or simply sightseeing, Portugal is somewhere you just have to visit. I personally adore Lisbon for its booming culinary scene and colourful backstreet bars and cafes.
Porto is my absolute favourite place in Europe and I've been too many times to count. It's super-inclusive and is also perfectly paired with a trip to Morocco.
Stellar service. Stellar products. Stellar people and it gets so much better when you pick up the phone and call.

A Luxury Journey Across Portugal & Morocco
Tailor-made HolidayLisbon and Marrakech sit less than three hours apart by air, close yet distinct enough that each feels like its own trip. Ten days move from the ease and elegance of Lisbon, with its candlelit restaurants, hilltop viewpoints, and some of Europe's most architecturally distinctive boutique hotels, to the heat, colour, and sensory depth of Marrakech, where one of the world's great palace hotels waits behind its ancient medina walls.

Madeira: The Ultimate Portuguese Island Adventure
Tailor-made HolidayMadeira offers terrain that few European islands can match: ancient rainforest, volcanic peaks, and dramatic cliff edges where the Atlantic drops away hundreds of metres below. With levada channels threading through landscapes that predate the ice age, it sits in a different category from most European islands. A week here covers a lot of ground and still leaves you with reasons to come back. The days move with intention.

Its beaches, with golden limestone cliffs folding into coves of water that shift between jade and deep Atlantic blue, have been drawing travellers for decades, and the hotel infrastructure has kept pace: the luxury end of this market is world-class, anchored by resorts that would hold their own anywhere in the Mediterranean and then some.
