Scandinavia Luxury Tour: Nordic Capitals & Fjords

12 days From $8,760 pp

At a glance

? Don't forget that all of our itineraries are totally customized and so this is just an idea of what we can build for you.

Four countries, twelve days, and a single thread of water and rail running through all of them. This is the grand tour of the Nordic capitals, Helsinki, Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen, with Norway’s fjords in the middle as the wild heart of the trip

You travel the way the region always has, by sea and by train. An overnight ferry carries you across the Baltic from Finland to Sweden. A long, scenic rail line takes you over the spine of Scandinavia into Norway, then down through the mountains to the fjords, where you trade the train for a boat.

Each city has its own character. Helsinki is calm and design-minded, half Nordic and half Baltic. Stockholm is built on water, all royal palaces and old-town lanes. Oslo is young and outdoorsy. Copenhagen is the easy, stylish one, with the food and the harbor and the bikes.

Between them, Bergen and the fjords supply the scenery people travel to Norway for: waterfalls, sheer cliffs, and villages that still make their own goat cheese.

Every leg is handled: private guides, drivers and assistants, your luggage sent ahead so you travel light. And the wider point is hard to miss. The Nordic countries are among the safest and most openly welcoming places in the world for LGBTQ+ travelers, so the only thing left to plan around is the weather.

In detail

Day 1: Arrival

Arrive in Helsinki, where a private driver and an English-speaking assistant meet you and see you through to your hotel. They hand over a welcome pack with your full itinerary and travel documents, then leave you to settle in at Hotel Fabian, a quiet, well-run boutique in the center of town.

The rest of the day is yours: rest off the flight, or take a first walk through a capital that feels calmer and more low-key than most.

Day 1: Arrival

Day 2: Explore Helsinki

A full day in the city with a private guide. See the neoclassical sweep of Senate Square and the cathedral above it, then the Temppeliaukio Church, blasted out of solid granite and roofed in copper.

Walk past Parliament House and Finlandia Hall before catching the ferry out to Suomenlinna, the 18th-century sea fortress spread across a chain of islands, now a UNESCO site and a favorite Helsinki picnic spot. In the evening you board an overnight ferry to Stockholm and settle into a sea-view cabin as the Baltic slides past.

Day 2: Explore Helsinki

Day 3: Arrival to Stockholm

The ferry docks in Stockholm in the morning. A driver and assistant meet you and take you to your hotel, and later a guide leads you into the Royal Palace, one of the largest in Europe, where the state rooms run to baroque and rococo excess and Queen Christina’s silver throne still stands in the hall.

From there it is a short walk into Gamla Stan, the old town, founded in the 13th century and still a maze of narrow lanes and ochre houses. You stay at Miss Clara, a design hotel built into a former girls’ school near the center.

Day 3: Arrival to Stockholm

Day 4: Stockholm

Embark on a half-day private tour to Drottningholm Palace, a UNESCO-listed masterpiece and private residence of the Swedish royals. Admire grand suites spanning centuries, stroll majestic parks, and explore the historic Court Theatre with its original 200-year-old stage machinery. Your guide will reveal the palace’s lavish history and exquisite details, from the regal Chinese Pavilion to stunning lakeside views.

Return to Stockholm, where the remainder of your day is at leisure. Whether discovering more of the city or simply relaxing, today’s experiences offer an exclusive glimpse into Sweden’s royal legacy, curated with impeccable care and personalised service.

Day 4: Stockholm

Day 5: A Scenic Journey to Oslo by Train

A driver takes you to the station for the train to Oslo, a roughly six-hour run through forest, lake country and the rolling farmland of the Swedish-Norwegian border. This is a journey worth doing slowly, as much part of the trip as a way to cross it. Oslo’s central station is a short walk from your hotel, the Clarion The Hub, so you arrive and check straight in.

Day 5: A Scenic Journey to Oslo by Train

Day 6: Oslo’s Icons & Royal Heritage

Set out on foot with a private guide through the center of Oslo. Start at Akershus Fortress, the medieval castle guarding the harbor, then walk the length of Karl Johans gate, the main avenue running from the station up to the Royal Palace.

Along the way you pass the Parliament, the cathedral and the old university buildings, and stop at the City Hall, the brick landmark where the Nobel Peace Prize is handed out each December. It is an easy, walkable capital, and a good day for getting your bearings.

Day 6: Oslo’s Icons & Royal Heritage

Day 7: Into the Fjords - Flam by Train & Zodiac

Your luggage goes ahead to Bergen so you can travel light. The day’s route is one of the great train journeys in Europe: the Bergen Line up to the mountain station at Myrdal, then the Flam Railway, which drops nearly 900 meters down a near-vertical valley past waterfalls and hillside farms.

At the bottom, in Flam, you swap the train for a small RIB boat and head out onto the Naeroyfjord, a UNESCO-listed arm of water so narrow the cliffs seem to close overhead. You stop at the village of Undredal for its famous goat cheese, then return to Flam for dinner at the Fretheim Hotel.

Day 7: Into the Fjords - Flam by Train & Zodiac

Day 8: Sognefjord to Bergen

Take it slow in Flam in the morning, then board a boat for the long cruise to Bergen. The route runs the length of the Sognefjord, the deepest and longest fjord in Norway, past the mouth of the Naeroyfjord you explored the day before. Hours pass with mountains rising straight from the water on either side and the odd red-roofed farm clinging to a ledge. You arrive in Bergen by water, the best way to see it, and check in at the Clarion Hotel Admiral on the harbor.

Day 8: Sognefjord to Bergen

Day 9: Bergen

A walking tour of Bergen with a private guide. The heart of it is Bryggen, the row of leaning wooden merchant houses along the old wharf, a UNESCO site and a survivor from the city’s centuries as a Hanseatic trading hub.

Wander the narrow passages behind the facades, look in at the fish market, then ride the Floyen funicular up the hillside for the view back over the city, the harbor and the islands beyond. Bergen gets a lot of rain, which is part of why it is so green.

Day 9: Bergen

Day 10: Welcome to Copenhagen

Fly from Bergen to Copenhagen, where a driver and guide are waiting for a relaxed tour of the city. You take in Christiansborg Palace, the seat of the Danish parliament, the royal apartments at Amalienborg, and the harborfront row of painted houses at Nyhavn, probably the most photographed spot in Denmark. Pass the Royal Theatre and Tivoli Gardens, and the small bronze Little Mermaid on her rock by the water. Check in at 71 Nyhavn, a hotel built into a pair of old harborside warehouses.

Day 10: Welcome to Copenhagen

Day 11: A Taste of Copenhagen

Spend the day eating your way around the city on a private food tour. Start at Torvehallerne, the covered market where you graze on cheese, smoked fish and Danish preserves, then work through the classics: smørrebrød, the open rye-bread sandwiches Danes take seriously, and a beer from one of the city’s small breweries. Walk it off in the Botanical Garden, and finish at Tivoli, the 1843 pleasure garden in the middle of town that helped inspire Walt Disney. A good last day, and an easy one.

Day 11: A Taste of Copenhagen

Day 12: Return Home

A private driver collects you for the airport and your flight home, four countries and a fair stretch of the Nordic map behind you.

Day 12: Return Home
