French Polynesia’s relationship with gender and sexuality has never followed Western conventions, and that is not a recent development. The Mahu, individuals who occupy a third gender position in Polynesian culture, have been recognized and integrated into Tahitian society for centuries, long before European contact introduced more binary frameworks. That cultural history gives French Polynesia’s openness toward LGBTQ+ travelers a grounding that goes considerably deeper than legislation.
The legislation itself is also strong. Homosexuality has never been criminalized in French Polynesia. Same-sex marriage has been legal since France extended its 2013 Marriage for All law to its overseas territories, making French Polynesia one of the first places in the Pacific to recognize equal marriage rights. French anti-discrimination law applies across the territory, covering employment, housing, and public services.
In practice, the islands are relaxed and welcoming. Day 1: Papeete & Tahiti
Your journey begins in Papeete, the cultural and commercial heart of Tahiti. Long before cruise ships and cafés, this island captured the imagination of explorers and artists drawn to its dramatic landscapes and deep-rooted traditions. Today, Papeete blends French elegance with Polynesian warmth, from its lively markets to the waterfront promenades overlooking Moorea in the distance.
It also stands as one of the world’s most welcoming LGBTQ+ destinations, with same-sex marriage legal since 2013. As the Wind Star prepares to depart in the early evening, Papeete sets the tone for the voyage ahead, where ancient mana and modern life exist side by side.
Day 2: Raiatea
Moorea greets you with sheer green peaks rising straight from the sea and a lagoon so calm it feels almost unreal. Often linked to the mythic South Pacific of novels and films, the island feels intimate and unspoiled.
The day unfolds at your own pace. Some guests head inland for panoramic viewpoints, others cycle the coastal road or drift in the warm lagoon waters.
Day 3: Taha'a
Raiatea holds a special place in Polynesian history as a spiritual center of the Pacific. Home to the sacred Taputapuātea marae, this island was once the starting point for great ocean voyages that shaped Polynesian culture across thousands of miles.
Life today moves gently, shaped by fishing, agriculture, and long-standing traditions. The landscape feels purposeful rather than dramatic, with calm waterways and fertile land producing vanilla and copra. You may witness stone fishing along the lagoon, a practice still passed down through generations. Raiatea carries a quiet authority, offering insight into the roots of Polynesian identity and belief.
Day 4: Bora Bora
Taha’a is known as the Vanilla Island, and the scent alone signals that this day will feel different. Surrounded by one of the region’s most vibrant lagoons, the island invites a slower rhythm. We transform a secluded stretch of shoreline into a relaxed beach escape, complete with music, swimming, and shaded spots to unwind.
A casual barbecue brings everyone together, with island flavors and an easy atmosphere that encourages lingering. Those who wish can explore vanilla plantations or cultural sites nearby, though many guests choose to stay put, letting the afternoon unfold naturally in this tranquil setting.
Day 5: Bora Bora
Arriving in Bora Bora feels like stepping into a landscape shaped by imagination. The lagoon shifts in color with the light, while Mount Otemanu rises sharply above the water. The first day sets the stage for something unforgettable.
As evening falls, guests are taken to a private motu just offshore for the Source Celebration Feast. Lanterns glow along the sand, dinner is served beneath the stars, and fire dancers bring the night to life against the moonlit lagoon. This gathering is more than a dinner. It is a shared moment that reflects the spirit of the journey and the community aboard.
Day 6: Huahine
Your second day in Bora Bora is intentionally unstructured. Some guests head out onto the water for snorkeling or sailing, while others choose stillness, settling into a quiet beach with a view of the lagoon. Optional excursions offer access to coral gardens and sheltered bays, with opportunities to spot manta rays in clear waters.
The island encourages presence rather than activity, allowing each guest to shape the day in their own way. Surrounded by water and sky, Bora Bora becomes less about spectacle and more about how it makes you feel, calm, open, and completely at ease.
Day 7 - 8: Papeete
Huahine offers a glimpse of Polynesia before mass tourism, where traditions remain woven into everyday life. The island is made up of two landmasses connected by a narrow bridge, with small villages spread along the shoreline. Ancient marae sit quietly among trees, while calm bays invite exploration by kayak or on foot. Life here feels unhurried, shaped by community and place rather than schedules. Visitors are welcomed with genuine warmth, and experiences feel personal rather than curated. Huahine encourages you to slow down and notice details, from reflections on the lagoon to the rhythm of island life unfolding naturally.
The voyage comes full circle as the Wind Star returns to Papeete. While the sailing concludes, the experience does not need to end just yet. Some guests relax in a nearby dayroom before onward travel, while others extend their stay to spend more time in Tahiti.
For a limited number of travelers, the journey continues with a specially curated New Zealand extension designed exclusively for Source guests. Whether heading home or continuing onward, this final morning is a chance to reflect on the connections made and the places experienced, carrying the spirit of the voyage forward into whatever comes next.
