Some trips are built for sightseeing, and this one is built for slowing down, moving from misty temple mornings in Ubud to coffee-scented highland trails and, finally, a stretch of coastline where the only plan is to stay a while.

This journey is a slower, more spiritual take on Bali, moving through temples and rice terraces, jungles, and coastlines, anchored throughout by genuine warmth toward LGBTQ+ travelers.

Bali’s Hindu spirituality is built around respect for all beings, and that welcome extends visibly to the guests who visit this part of Indonesia.

The trip opens in Ubud, where misty mornings and sacred rituals set an unhurried tone from the very first day.

Time here moves around the Ayung River’s sounds, the energy of local markets, and Bali’s deep-rooted food and ceremonial traditions, a gentle landing before the retreat’s more active stretches begin.

High in the hills of Munduk, the pace shifts to something quieter still, shaped by coffee, craft, and small mountain communities.

Days here involve learning traditional techniques, hiking to waterfalls hidden in the forest, and simply taking in the clouds drifting below the highlands, Bali’s more poetic, grounded side.

The final days settle by the water in Pemuteran, on Bali’s quieter northwest coast.

Diving among vibrant coral reefs, walking jungle trails, and dining under open skies close out the trip, in a part of the island that feels considerably removed from the pace of the south.

In detail

Day 1: Arrival in Ubud

Arrive in Bali, where a private guide meets you for the transfer to the tranquil highlands of Ubud, the landscape shifting from airport sprawl to rice paddies within the first half hour of the drive.

The rest of the day is left at leisure, a genuine chance to acclimatize to the island’s pace, whether that means a swim, a rest, or a slow walk through the surrounding grounds as the sun begins to set.

Many guests find the first evening the best time to simply sit with the sound of the jungle and the Ayung River below, letting the pace of travel fall away before the retreat properly begins.

Day 1: Arrival in Ubud

Day 2: Ubud at Dawn

An early start takes in Ubud at its quietest, before the markets and streets fill for the day, the town still wrapped in mist and the air cool enough to make walking genuinely pleasant.

Local life is on full display at this hour, from monks preparing morning offerings to shopkeepers opening their stalls one by one.

The rest of the morning is left unstructured, an easy way to settle further into the retreat’s slower rhythm, whether that means returning to your accommodation or continuing to explore Ubud’s quieter back streets.

Day 2: Ubud at Dawn

Day 3: Flavors of Bali

A day built around Balinese food and ceremony, opening with a visit to a local market still used by residents rather than tourists.

The range of spices, fruits, and offerings on display tells its own story about daily Balinese life.

A hands-on cooking class follows, using ingredients sourced from the surrounding valley to prepare a handful of traditional dishes, from spiced sambals to slow-cooked meats.

A local instructor explains the cultural and ceremonial significance behind several of the recipes.

Day 3: Flavors of Bali

Day 4: Sacred Temples and Highland Views

A day of temple visits, including sites known for their carved stone entrances, tiered meru towers, and centuries of continuous worship, each offering a different window into Balinese Hindu practice.

Between temples, highland viewpoints open out over Bali’s terraced countryside.

The rice paddies step down the hillsides in shades of green that shift with the light throughout the day.

Day 4: Sacred Temples and Highland Views

Day 5: Culture Among the Clouds

The journey continues into the hills of Munduk, where local artisans demonstrate traditional crafts passed down through generations, from weaving to woodworking.

Many still use techniques and tools that have changed little over time.

The cooler mountain air and slower pace mark a clear shift from Ubud’s energy, and the drive itself, winding through coffee plantations and small mountain villages, is worth savoring rather than rushing.

Day 5: Culture Among the Clouds

Day 6: Waterfall Wonders

A hike through coffee and clove plantations reaches a series of waterfalls tucked into the surrounding forest, the trail shaded almost entirely by jungle canopy overhead.

Time is built in to swim in the cool pools beneath the falls, a welcome contrast to the warmth of the hike itself.

The walk back through the plantations comes as the afternoon light begins to soften.

Day 6: Waterfall Wonders

Day 7: From Mountains to the Sea

The journey descends from Munduk’s highlands to Pemuteran, on Bali’s quieter northwest coast, a considerable contrast to both Ubud and the mountains in both climate and pace.

The drive passes through changing landscapes, from cloud forest to dry coastal scrub.

It arrives at a stretch of coastline with a noticeably different, more relaxed character than anywhere visited so far.

Day 7: From Mountains to the Sea

Day 8: Beneath the Waves

A day built around Pemuteran’s coral reefs, among the healthiest in Bali thanks to long-running local conservation efforts, including artificial reef structures that have helped regenerate coral growth over the past two decades.

Diving or snorkeling here suits any experience level, with calm, clear water and an abundance of reef fish.

The afternoon is left free to relax by the shore once the day’s diving is done.

Day 8: Beneath the Waves

Day 9: Relax and Explore Pemuteran

A final full day left open, whether that means further time on the beach, a walk along one of the area’s quieter jungle trails, or simply the stillness of Pemuteran’s coastline as the retreat winds toward its close.

Many guests use this day to reflect on how the pace of the trip has shifted since Ubud’s busier opening days.

The next day, a private transfer connects to the airport in good time for the departure flight.

The retreat closes having moved deliberately from temple to highland to reef, each stage built to slow the pace of the one before it.

Day 9: Relax and Explore Pemuteran
