Orangutans in the canopy, ancient temples at sunrise, and a rare, unfiltered corner of Indonesia.

This journey opens deep in the jungles of northern Sumatra, where orangutans move freely through the canopy and rivers cut through valleys carved over millennia.

Eco-lodges in Tangkahan and Bukit Lawang serve as bases for trekking through one of the world’s last major rainforests, an experience built around encountering wildlife directly rather than from behind a fence.

From Sumatra’s wilderness, the trip continues to the cultural centers of Java: Jakarta’s energy, Bandung’s arts scene, and Yogyakarta’s living traditions of dance and craft.

The Sultan’s Palace and a sunrise visit to Borobudur, alongside the temple spires of nearby Prambanan, anchor the more historical side of the trip.

Indonesia‘s approach to LGBTQ+ travelers varies considerably by region, and this itinerary is built with that in mind.

Java’s cultural hubs and the eco-lodges used in Sumatra both have a reputation for a genuinely progressive, welcoming attitude.

Day 1: Departure

Board your international flight to Medan, the starting point for the Sumatra leg of the journey.

The long flight is easier to settle into with the rainforest, wildlife, and ancient temples of the days ahead to look forward to.

Day 1: Departure

Day 2: Welcome to Medan

Arrive in Medan, Sumatra’s largest city, where a driver meets you for the transfer to your accommodation.

The rest of the day is left to settle in and adjust before the journey moves into the rainforest the following morning.

A short walk through the city introduces the blend of colonial architecture and modern development that characterizes much of urban Sumatra.

Local warungs nearby offer an easy first taste of Sumatran cooking, distinct in its heavier use of spice compared to Bali or Java.

Day 2: Welcome to Medan

Day 3: Into the Rainforest

Transfer to Tangkahan, on the edge of the Gunung Leuser rainforest, one of the last strongholds of Sumatran wildlife including elephants, tigers, and orangutans.

The drive itself takes you from Medan’s urban sprawl into increasingly dense jungle, the change in scenery becoming obvious within the first hour.

The eco-lodge used for this stop was chosen in part for its genuinely welcoming approach to LGBTQ+ guests.

It sits directly against the forest edge, with the sound of the river running nearby audible from most rooms.

Day 3: Into the Rainforest

Day 4: Adventure in Tangkahan

A day built around the rainforest itself, opening with river tubing along a stretch of calm water framed by dense jungle on both banks.

Jungle walks in the afternoon introduce the area’s wildlife and landscape before the deeper trekking begins further into the trip.

Local guides point out everything from hornbills overhead to the tracks of larger animals along the riverbank.

An evening spent by the river, away from any artificial light, offers one of the clearest night skies of the entire trip.

Day 4: Adventure in Tangkahan

Day 5: Onward to Bukit Lawang

Continue to Bukit Lawang, a smaller rainforest town and one of the best-known bases in the world for observing orangutans in their natural habitat.

The town sits along the Bohorok River at the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park, with jungle rising steeply on either side of the water.

The afternoon is left free to explore the town itself or simply rest ahead of the following day’s trek.

Day 5: Onward to Bukit Lawang

Day 6: Orangutan Trekking

A guided trek through the rainforest offers a real chance to encounter wild orangutans directly, alongside the canopy’s wider wildlife.

Long-tailed macaques, monitor lizards, and a striking range of birdlife are common sights along the trail.

This is an experience built around unfiltered nature rather than a managed wildlife park, and sightings, while likely, are never guaranteed.

Guides are skilled at tracking recent movement through the canopy, improving the odds considerably over an unguided walk.

Day 6: Orangutan Trekking

Day 7: To Jakarta

A flight connects Sumatra’s wilderness to Jakarta, Java’s capital, marking a deliberate shift from rainforest to city for the remainder of the trip.

The contrast between the two is immediate, from jungle quiet to the scale and energy of one of Southeast Asia’s largest metropolitan areas.

The rest of the day is left free to settle into the city at your own pace.

Day 7: To Jakarta

Day 8: Cultural Bandung

Travel to Bandung, known for its arts scene, colonial-era Art Deco architecture, and cooler hill-town climate.

The change in altitude brings a welcome contrast to Jakarta’s heat and density.

Local workshops and galleries offer insight into the contemporary Indonesian art scene alongside the city’s more traditional crafts.

An afternoon spent wandering Bandung’s streets reveals a side of Java quite different from either the capital or Yogyakarta.

Day 8: Cultural Bandung

Day 9: Scenic Train to Yogyakarta

A scenic train journey through Java’s countryside reaches Yogyakarta, widely considered the cultural heart of Java.

The route passes rice paddies, volcanoes, and small rural stations rarely seen by travelers moving between cities by car.

Yogyakarta itself is known for graceful traditional dance, artisanal batik and silver work, and a genuinely open, welcoming street life.

The city has long served as a center for the arts, and that reputation is evident from the moment you arrive.

Day 9: Scenic Train to Yogyakarta

Day 10: Exploring Yogyakarta

A day spent in Yogyakarta itself, centered on the Sultan’s Palace, one of the clearest windows into Javanese royal tradition still in daily use.

Resident court musicians and dancers continue ceremonial practices that have been performed at the palace for centuries.

The surrounding old town rewards a slower pace, with batik workshops and small galleries tucked along its side streets.

An evening traditional dance performance is an easy way to round out the day.

Day 10: Exploring Yogyakarta

Day 11: Sunrise at Borobudur

An early start reaches Borobudur before sunrise, the world’s largest Buddhist temple and one of Southeast Asia’s most significant historical sites.

Its stepped pyramid structure rising out of the morning mist is one of the more memorable sights on the entire trip.

A visit to the temple spires of nearby Prambanan follows, Java’s largest Hindu temple complex and a striking contrast in architectural style to Borobudur’s rounded stupas.

The day is devoted entirely to these two monuments, allowing time to properly take in both rather than rushing between them.

Day 11: Sunrise at Borobudur

Day 12: Farewell

A private transfer connects to the airport in good time for the departure flight.

The trip closes having moved from Sumatra’s wilderness to the heart of Javanese culture and history, each leg of the journey a deliberate contrast to the one before it.

Day 12: Farewell
