The Best Gay Beaches in Taiwan

Discover Taiwan’s gay beach culture at Shalun, Asia’s premier gay beach.

Taiwan might be small, but it packs an outsized punch when it comes to LGBTQ+ friendly beach culture. This island nation of 23 million has become a major LGBTQ+ travel destination in Asia, and its beaches reflect the same progressive spirit that made Taiwan the first Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage in 2019.

Shalun Beach: Asia’s Premier Gay Beach Destination

Located in Tamsui, just outside Taipei, Shalun Beach (沙崙海灘) has earned its reputation as one of Asia’s most famous gay beaches—and for good reason. This secluded stretch of coastline has been a cornerstone of Taiwan’s LGBTQ+ community for decades, offering something increasingly rare in conservative Asia: a space where gay men can truly be themselves.

Shalun Beach operates as more than just a beach—it’s an institution. The site has historical significance dating back to when it was once a public beach resort open from mid-May to mid-October each year. After the resort was abandoned several years ago, the secluded spot naturally evolved into Taiwan’s de facto gay beach, attracting gay men from across the nation and increasingly from around Asia.

What Makes Shalun Special

Clothing-Optional: Shalun is renowned for its clothing-optional policy, making it one of the few places in Asia where nude sunbathing is allowed. Many visitors come specifically to experience this liberating aspect of beach culture, whether socializing with fellow beachgoers or simply enjoying the freedom of swimming and sunbathing without restrictions.

Natural Beauty and Seclusion: Despite being easily accessible from Taipei, Shalun maintains a sense of seclusion that’s increasingly rare near major Asian cities.

Getting to Shalun Beach

The beach is accessible from central Taipei, making it perfect for day trips or weekend escapes:

By Public Transport: Take the MRT Red Line to Tamsui Station, then catch the bus to Fisherman’s Wharf until you reach the Observatory Deck, just before the entry to the wharf. At the Observatory Deck, you’ll see wooden stairs leading to a gazebo—pass the motor scooters parked alongside the road, and this is where you’ll find the gay cruising areas. Continue and turn left into the woods to find the main beach area.

Alternative Route: Ride the Taipei MRT to Hongshulin Station, then transfer to the Blue Coastal Line of the Danhai LRT (bound for Fisherman’s Wharf) and get off at Binhai Shalun Station. You can also take a river ferry from Tamsui to Fisherman’s Wharf and walk about 10 minutes.

Other Gay-Friendly Beaches in Taiwan

While Shalun Beach dominates Taiwan’s gay beach scene, the island’s overall beach culture is remarkably inclusive. Taiwan’s progressive LGBTQ+ laws and social attitudes mean that gay travelers generally feel welcome at most beaches across the island, though Shalun remains the only beach with a specifically established gay identity.

Beaches near Taipei, such as Fulong Beach, Baishawan, and Qianshuiwan, while not specifically gay beaches, maintain the same welcoming atmosphere.

Year-Round Beach Culture

Unlike many Asian destinations where beach culture is strictly seasonal, Taiwan’s subtropical climate and diverse coastline create year-round opportunities for beach activities. The island’s beaches range from dramatic black volcanic sand beaches in the north to pristine white coral sand beaches in the south.

How Gay Beach Culture Fits Into Taiwan’s Broader LGBTQ+ Scene

Taiwan’s gay beach culture doesn’t exist in isolation—it’s intrinsically connected to the island’s broader LGBTQ+ community, particularly the famous Red House district in Taipei’s Ximending area. Many visitors to Shalun Beach are also regulars in the Red House gay bar scene.

The Red House district, has a concentration of over twenty gay bars and three major gay clubs.

The Circuit Party Connection

Taiwan’s beach culture connects seamlessly with the island’s famous circuit party scene. Events like the Dragon Boat Circuit Festival in June combine traditional cultural celebrations with modern LGBTQ+ party culture, while Taiwan Pride—the largest Pride celebration in Asia with over 200,000 attendees—creates natural opportunities for beach parties.

The Broader Beach Landscape in Taiwan

Taiwan’s compact size (roughly the same as the Netherlands) means that beaches are incredibly accessible from any point on the island. This accessibility creates opportunities for spontaneous beach trips and encourages the integration of beach culture into daily LGBTQ+ community life rather than treating beaches as distant, special-occasion destinations.

The island’s excellent public transportation system, including high-speed rail and comprehensive local transit, means that beaches like Shalun remain easily accessible even for visitors without cars—unusual in Asian beach destinations.
