Celebrating 10 Years of Luxury LGBTQ+ Travel

Why is Costa Rica a popular luxury travel destination?

? Don't forget that all of our itineraries are totally customized and so this is just an idea of what we can build for you.

The country is consistently ranked one of the happiest in the world, and it shows. Costa Rica has no military, a clean environment, and a laid-back culture that runs from the cities to the smallest beach towns. Tico hospitality is the real thing.

It’s also one of the most biologically diverse countries on earth. Dense jungle full of monkeys, sloths, toucans and reptiles.

Volcanoes and hot springs. Cloud forests in the highlands. Powder-white beaches on the Pacific side at Manuel Antonio and Nosara, and a rougher, palm-fringed Caribbean coast at Puerto Viejo for travelers who want somewhere different.

The country runs at two speeds. For the active version of the trip, there’s zip-lining through cloud forest, white-water rafting, jungle treks, surfing lessons in Santa Teresa, and the hot springs around Arenal volcano.

For the slower version, beach towns where the days run on their own clock and dinner is whatever was caught that afternoon.

Whichever speed you choose, Costa Rica delivers.

Travel Information for Costa Rica

General Information

The list of things to do is endless. Costa Rica has beaches, rainforests, ravines to white water raft down and a capital city which has so much culture for you to find out about.

The capital city San Jose might not be the first destination you wish to visit on your vacation, but often people are pleasantly surprised. If you can get over the noisy traffic and concrete buildings then you will discover the city’s charm and character. Visit the historical neighbourhood of Barrio Amón which is covered in colonial architecture.

If you are looking to test your paddling skills then head to the Turrialba Area. The Río Reventazón River have carved its way through the Cordillera Central over time which is one of central America’s best rafting spots.

Visit the Parque Nacional Volcán which is where Volcán Arenal is located. This volcano lay dormant for 42 years until its explosion in 2010. Though it may have stopped spewing ash and lava, this park is still a worthy visit as the volcanic soil means there is plenty of beautiful vegetation to gaze at.

Visit the village of Tortuguero which is only accessible by boat or plane. This little village is best known for the hoards of sea turtles it attracts (Tortuguero translates as turtle catcher’).

Costa Rica LGBTQ+ Rights

Costa Rica is the most progressive country in Central America for LGBTQ+ travelers. Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2020, when Costa Rica became the first country in the region to legalize it. Anti-discrimination laws cover sexual orientation and gender identity, and trans travelers can update their name and gender marker on official documents.

San José has the country’s main LGBTQ+ scene, centered on Barrio Escalante and the gay bars and clubs along Calle 7. Manuel Antonio is the country’s best-known gay-friendly beach destination, with a long-established scene around the Pacific coast hotels and beach clubs.

Outside these two areas the country is broadly welcoming, particularly in the resort destinations on the Nicoya Peninsula and around Arenal.
For honeymoons and weddings, Costa Rica is one of the easiest destinations in the Americas.

Same-sex weddings are fully legal, the resorts we book welcome same-sex couples as standard, and the country is set up for destination weddings if you’d like to combine the two.

How We Book the Trip

Costa Rica is a small country with very different worlds inside it. Volcanoes in the north, cloud forest in the highlands, rainforest on the Osa Peninsula, and beaches on two oceans. The trip is built around combining three or four of them, and the choice of which ones, in what order, is the conversation we’ll have with you first.

The guides matter here more than in almost any country we book. The difference between a forgettable nature walk and the morning you spot twenty species you’d never have seen on your own is entirely about who’s leading it. We work with the same naturalist guides year after year, and we’ll match you with the right one for the way you like to travel.

Internal logistics is the other piece. The country looks small on a map, but the roads are slow and the domestic flights save days. Knowing when to drive, when to fly Sansa, and when to hire a private transfer is part of the build.

LGBTQ+ travelers will find Costa Rica one of the most progressive countries in Central America. Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2020, and the hotels and guides we work with welcome same-sex couples as standard.

Every trip we book is fully tailor-made. You’ll have one dedicated specialist from your first enquiry through to the day you fly home.

Arenal Volcano

The most active volcano in Costa Rica anchors the north of the country, and it’s the part of the trip nobody forgets. Stay at Nayara Tented Camp or Nayara Springs, soak in the thermal hot springs after dark, and take an early morning walk through the lava fields with a guide who can read the forest.

Arenal is where most Costa Rica itineraries start, and it sets the tone for everything that follows.

Manuel Antonio

Costa Rica’s most-photographed stretch of coastline pairs Pacific beaches with a small national park where you can see sloths, capuchin monkeys and toucans on a morning walk. Stay at Arenas del Mar or Tulemar, take a guided early-morning hike before the park fills up, and spend your afternoons on the beach.

It’s the easiest place in the country to combine wildlife and beach in the same day.

The Osa Peninsula

The Osa is the wildest place in Costa Rica, and the one that rewards travelers willing to fly to it. Corcovado National Park covers most of the peninsula and protects one of the most biologically dense rainforests on earth.

Stay at Lapa Rios or Nicuesa Lodge, hike with a private guide, and spend your evenings on a deck watching macaws fly back to roost.

Luxury Travel in Costa Rica

Luxury travel in Costa Rica is about the setting. The best hotels here are built into rainforest, cloud forest or cliffside, with open-air rooms and decks that look onto something extraordinary. Once you’ve stayed in one, the rest of the trip arranges itself around it.

The standout properties have a real character to them. Lapa Rios on the Osa Peninsula, set above the Pacific in a private rainforest reserve. Nayara at Arenal, where private springs feed into your villa’s plunge pool with the volcano framed through the trees.

Pacuare Lodge on the Pacuare River, reached by white-water raft. Senda Monteverde in the cloud forest. Kura Design Villas above Uvita, with infinity pools that drop into the Pacific. These are the names that sit alongside the better-known luxury destinations in Asia and Africa.

Beyond the hotels, the experiences are where the country quietly outperforms expectations. Private guided wildlife walks at dawn with a naturalist who knows the territory.

Boat trips through the canals of Tortuguero to watch sea turtles nesting. Helicopter transfers between regions that turn three travel days into one. Sunset on a private catamaran off the Nicoya Peninsula. A coffee tasting on a working farm in the Central Valley.

Getting to Costa Rica

Costa Rica has two international airports. Juan Santamaría (SJO) near San José is the main gateway and the easier choice for trips that start with Arenal or the Caribbean coast. Liberia (LIR) in the north is closer to Guanacaste and the Pacific beaches, and a better option if you’re heading straight to Nicoya or Papagayo. Most itineraries fly into one and out of the other.

From the US

Costa Rica is one of the easiest long-haul destinations from the US. Direct flights run from Miami, New York, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Charlotte and Los Angeles to both San José and Liberia, with American, United, Delta and JetBlue all operating year-round.

Flight time is around three hours from Miami and six from Los Angeles, which makes Costa Rica an easier choice than most tropical destinations of comparable quality.

From the UK

British Airways flies direct from London Gatwick to San José seasonally. Outside of those months the most popular routings are via Miami, Madrid or Atlanta. Total journey time is around 14 to 16 hours, and a stopover in Miami works well for travelers who’d rather break the flight in two halves.

We’ll handle the international flights, the in-country logistics (Sansa domestic flights, private transfers, the river boat to Pacuare Lodge if you’re staying there), and any stopover hotels.
