Japan does not yet have national same-sex marriage equality, but that has not stopped it from being one of the most compelling destinations for LGBTQ+ couples considering a wedding or honeymoon abroad.

What Japan offers instead is something arguably more personal: the option to celebrate your relationship through a private, beautifully considered ceremony in one of the world’s most atmospheric settings, without a legal framework determining what the moment means to you.

Shunkoin Temple in Kyoto has been performing same-sex ceremonies since 2014. The ryokans that partner with ceremony specialists have been doing this thoughtfully for years. The legal picture may still be catching up, but the experience has been available, and extraordinary, for longer than most people realise.

Shunkoin Temple, Kyoto

Shunkoin is a Zen Buddhist sub-temple within the Myoshin-Ji complex in Kyoto, established in 1590. It was the first temple in Japan to officially announce that it performs same-sex wedding ceremonies, and it has been doing so with remarkable care and cultural authenticity ever since.

Ceremonies incorporate traditional elements: san-san-kudo, the ritual sharing of sake, Buddhist vows, and the kind of setting, ancient wooden architecture surrounded by moss gardens, that no hotel ceremony space can replicate.

The temple’s deputy head priest has officiated hundreds of same-sex ceremonies and approaches each one with a thoughtfulness that couples consistently describe as the highlight of their time in Japan.

A garden ceremony in a Kyoto machiya

Kyoto’s machiya, the traditional wooden townhouses that line the older streets of the city, can be hired privately for ceremonies through specialist operators.

A small garden, a catered wedding breakfast, a space that is distinctly Kyoto rather than hotel-lobby Japan. This works particularly well for couples bringing a small group of guests and wanting something that feels like a private occasion rather than a resort package.

A private ryokan ceremony

For couples who want something more intimate, a blessing ceremony at a high-end ryokan offers a different register entirely. Tatami rooms, in-room cypress baths, a garden visible through shoji screens. No other guests. Dinner served course by course in your room afterward.

Several of Kinosaki Onsen’s finest ryokans have worked with Out Of Office to offer this format, and for couples who find the idea of a temple ceremony too formal, it is a deeply personal alternative.

The legal details

Japan does not currently have national same-sex marriage equality, making it the only G7 country yet to pass marriage equality legislation. Same-sex couples cannot legally marry under Japanese national law, and while the issue is moving through the courts, with multiple high courts ruling the ban unconstitutional and the cases now awaiting a Supreme Court decision, no timeline for legislative change has been confirmed.

What does exist is a municipal partnership certificate system. As of 2026, hundreds of cities and prefectures across Japan, covering the vast majority of the population, recognise same-sex relationships through these certificates. They are not equivalent to marriage and do not confer full spousal rights under national law, but they provide practical recognition in areas such as hospital visitation and housing within participating municipalities. For international visitors they have limited direct relevance.

What this means in practice for couples considering a ceremony in Japan is straightforward. A wedding here will be a symbolic ceremony rather than a legal one. That is not a limitation unique to Japan: many couples choose to marry legally at home and celebrate with a ceremony abroad, and Japan offers a setting for that celebration that is genuinely without equal.

Why Out Of Office

We have been planning Japan itineraries for LGBTQ+ couples for years, including ceremony trips, honeymoons, and combinations of both. We know which ceremony formats suit which couples, which properties approach LGBTQ+ guests with genuine warmth rather than compliance, and which coordinators treat every wedding as requiring individual attention.

On a practical level, we handle the restaurant reservations that require Japanese-speaking intermediaries, the ryokan check-in logistics, the Shinkansen connections, and the documentation coordination for the legal ceremony. We are available throughout your trip and have in-country support if anything needs adjusting on the ground.

Further information

Tokyo: Days 1-2

You arrive into Haneda and transfer directly to your hotel. We recommend Aman Tokyo for a wedding trip: the scale and calm of the property set the right tone for what follows, and the spa provides the kind of pre-ceremony recovery that a long-haul flight makes necessary. Two nights in Tokyo gives you time to adjust, explore the city at your own pace, and arrive in Kyoto ready for what you came for.

Tokyo: Days 1-2

Kyoto: Days 3-5

The bullet train south takes two hours and fifteen minutes. Your ceremony takes place on day four, giving you a day to settle into the city first and a day after to simply be in Kyoto as a married couple. We recommend Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto for the ceremony stay, built on the historic Mitsui family estate with a private onsen and a team that has worked with LGBTQ+ guests with consistency and care. Six Senses Kyoto is an equally strong option for couples who prioritize wellness as part of the stay.

On the day itself, your Out Of Office specialist will have arranged everything: transportation to the ceremony, a dedicated coordinator, florals, and the wedding breakfast reservation.

Kyoto: Days 3-5

Kinosaki Onsen: Days 6-7

The Kounotori limited express north from Osaka takes around two and a half hours and deposits you in one of Japan’s most atmospheric towns. Kinosaki is a single willow-lined street, seven historic bathhouses, and a handful of exceptional ryokans.

After the intensity of Kyoto, it operates as a natural decompression: yukata robes, the onsen circuit at your own pace, kaiseki dinner served in your tatami room. We recommend Nishimuraya Honkan, the finest property in town, with in-room cypress baths and a kitchen that treats the season as its primary ingredient.

Kinosaki Onsen: Days 6-7

Kanazawa: Days 8-9

Kanazawa sits on the Sea of Japan coast and has the particular quality of a city that history treated well. Kenroku-en, one of Japan’s three great landscape gardens, is here, as are the preserved samurai and geisha districts of Nagamachi and Higashi Chaya.

The city’s craft heritage, gold leaf work, Kutani ceramics, Kaga silk, is among the most distinguished in Japan. For couples who want their trip to end somewhere that feels like a discovery rather than a familiar landmark, Kanazawa earns its place. We recommend The Share Hotels Kanazawa or, for the most design-conscious option, Hotel Kotorinoki.

Kanazawa: Days 8-9

Departure: Day 10

Kanazawa to Osaka Kansai International Airport takes around two hours by rail. Most major US hubs connect directly.
